Description
Rome: Typis G. Palchi, 1709. FIRST EDITION. Hardcover. Fine. Complete with all 172 full-paged engraved plates of specimens from the museum's collections and the portrait of the dedicatee, Francesco Ruspoli. Bound in contemporary vellum over boards (soiled, corners bumped, wear to the lower edges of the covers with some exposure of the boards. A nice copy with minor soiling and occasional small spots. There is a small stain in the upper blank margin of the final four index leaves and the blank versos of the final 3 plates. First edition of Filippo Buonanni's sumptuous catalogue of Athanasius Kircher's renowned museum at the Collegio Romano in Rome. "Buonanni was one of the most learned Jesuits of his time, was a pupil of Athanasius Kircher, and in 1680 succeeded his master as teacher of mathematics at the Collegium Romanum; erudite in a number of fields, including conchology, numismatics, and ecclesiastical history (writing on all three subjects), Buonanni made extensive studies in the natural sciences; he constructed his own microscope with three lenses which proved to be an ingenious mechanism for continual observation."(DSB II, 591) Buonanni was appointed curator of Kircher's museum in 1698. He inherited the museum in a disorganized and dilapidated state. He spent the next ten years painstakingly restoring and greatly expanding the numerous collections, ultimately publishing his catalogue of the "Museum Kircherianum" in 1709. I. Kircher's Museum: "[A large group of Egyptian artifacts, presented to Kircher by the noted Nicolas Claude Fabri de Peiresc] formed the original nucleus of what became the Museo Kircheriano. To them Kircher gradually added mathematical instruments which he used in his research and teaching at the Collegio, thus forming his own "cabinet" which he eventually expanded with acquisitions of other scientific instruments, largely relating to physics and astronomy, as well as mechanisms and devices of his own invention. Each of his preoccupations was reflected in the additions he made to the collections. Peiresc later sent Kircher gifts of other materials which became part of the growing museum. From his Egyptian research he added models of obelisks and his investigations into music produced musical instruments and hydraulic organs. Clocks, scientific instruments, ethnographic materials, natural history specimens, all became the raw materials for his studies as he ventured into one new subject area after another. On each of his travels, such as his journey to Sicily and Malta, Kircher sought materials for study and eventual display as he continued to build the museum with skeletons and preserved examples of birds and animals, geological specimens, and works of art representing aspects of culture. Not the least of the collections were those relating to mechanics and other aspects of technology that captured his attention. "Kircher first accommodated his "cabinet" with the College library in a relatively small hall made available to him for the purpose. When in 1651 the secretary of the Roman senate Alfonso Donnini dies and bequeathed his collection of classical antiquities to the Collegio Romano, it was added to Kircher's "cabinet" and additional space was required. "An additional productive source of acquisitions for the Museo Kircheriano were materials which Jesuit missionaries sent back or brought back to their headquarters in Rome from all parts of the world and provided Kircher additional opportunities for his studies. One of his best informants was Martino Martini of Trent, from whom he obtained some of his finest Chinese artifacts. As he acquired more and more material from missionaries, the little museum in the Collegio emerged as the most extensive and celebrated private ethnographical collection of the seventeenth-century in Europe. "In time it became necessary for Kircher to acquire specialized assistance for his scientific experiments, preserving specimens, constructing models and mechanisms, and organizing and displaying his collections. Best known was Georgio de Sepi, described by Kircher as "custos musaei et in machinis elaborandis artifex." Another who assisted Kircher in the museum was the former student Francesco Terzi Lana, who later developed his own small museum at the college at Brescia where he taught. "In 1678 the first published catalogue of the Museo Kircheriano was produced by Sepi. It was arranged in accordance with the physical disposition of the collections and it described and illustrated Egyptian and classical artifacts, early lighting devices, musical instruments, plants and grasses, insects, and scientific apparatus. "Distinguished visitors who came from abroad to see the famous museum included the English diarist John Evelyn who saw it during its early period in 1644. He reported that Kircher had conducted him through various parts of the Collegio including his own study, "where, with Dutch patience, he shew'd his perpetual motions, catoptrics, magnetical experiments, models, and a thousand other crochets and devices." II. Buonanni and the Restoration of the Museum after Kircher's death: "The years immediately following Kircher's death in 1680 witnessed the beginning of the decline of the museum which had reached its apogee shortly before. With no one to attend them, the collections were grossly neglected for a considerable period, during which many objects were stolen, and others were destroyed or lost. "The museum remained in total chaos until 1698, when the Jesuit Filippo Buonanni was assigned responsibility for it and began the slow process of reorganization and cataloguing. He found that the construction of the new church for the Collegio (begun in the year of Kircher's death) had rendered the hall adjacent to the library unfit for maintaining the collections, and he sought new quarters for them. He transferred the museum to a corridor on the upper floor facing the garden. He managed to have a large terrace covered over to form a special gallery, but the collection still lacked adequate security. Despite his efforts it continued to be vandalized and finally Pope Clement XI issued an edict threatening grave punishment and even excommunication to anyone violating the museum. "Encouraged by the Collegio's rector Giovanbattista Tolomei, later cardinal, Buonanni gradually enlarged the space for the collections by usurping an adjacent corridor and several small rooms. Tolomei furnished funds for making the required structural changes and for purchasing new acquisitions, and after his death he left a legacy for the museum. "In time the Museo Kircheriano again prospered under the deft management of Buonanni. He expanded the number of cabinets to sixty, with new acquisitions including machines of physics, mathematical instruments, as well as important ethnographic and natural history specimens. "The collections were divided by Buonanni into a new arrangement of twelve classes. In one he classified Greek and Roman antiquities, house-hold utensils, weights and measures, and in another he categorized flora and fauna that had come Jesuit missions abroad, such as exotic fruit, seeds, plants, preserved birds and animals including the little chameleon from Palestine about which Kircher had written. He assigned one class to 'Observations of minute bodies made with a microscope' made by Kircher with his own instruments. Perpetual motion machines, hydraulic organs, burning glasses, and Babylonian and Coptic sundials were in other groupings, and mechanics were represented by models. "In 1709 Buonanni published a well-illustrated catalogue arranged in accordance with his reorganization of the museum. He remained in charge until his death in 1725. The collections were ultimately dispersed by the Italian government, in 1870, after the unification of Italy." (Silvio Bedini, "Citadels of Learning" in "Enciclopedismo in Roma Barocca: Athanasius Kircher e il Museo del Collegio Romano tra Wunderkammer e museo scientifico", pp. 258-262) Contents: Classis prima. Description
5/12/98. The Bull also announces the establishment of a new archdiocese in Cuba, to be headed by an archbishop This is our first ever declaration of Pope John Paul IIPope John Paul II made a historic, first-ever papal visit to Cuba from January 21–25, 1998, delivering a message of hope, freedom and social justice while also criticizing the communist system and capitalist forces. During the visit, the Pope met with Cuban leader Fidel Castro, in a highly publicized event that included a private meeting with the two men later expressing mutual respect. The visit also included a large Mass in Havana's Plaza of the Revolution, and it resulted in more freedom for the Catholic Church in Cuba, a decision to allow public Christmas celebrations, and a more prominent role for religious dissent in the public sphere. The visit was seen as a significant cultural and religious event, renewing the faith of many Catholics and fostering a greater sense of hope and openness within the country. It also marked a turning point in Catholic-Cuban relations, laying the groundwork for subsequent papal visits and efforts to foster dialogue and reconciliation. The Pope’s welcome ceremony address stated, “I thank God, the Lord of history and of our personal destinies, that he has enabled me to come to this land which Christopher Columbus called ""the most beautiful that human eyes have seen"". Arriving on this island, where the cross of Christ was raised over 500 years ago — the same cross zealously treasured today in the parish church of Baracoa, in the extreme eastern part of the country - I greet everyone with warm affection.“This happy and long-awaited day has finally arrived, and I am able to answer the invitation which the Cuban Bishops made a long time ago, and which the President of the Republic had also made and personally reiterated on the occasion of his visit to the Vatican in November 1996. I am filled with happiness to be able to visit your country, being among you and sharing these days of faith, hope and love. I am pleased to address my greetings in the first place to the President, Dr Fidel Castro Ruz, who has kindly come here to meet me and to whom I wish to express my thanks for his words of welcome…“I cordially greet my Brothers in the Episcopate; in particular Cardinal Jaime Lucas Ortega y Alamino, Archbishop of Havana, and each of the other Cuban Bishops, as well as those who have come from other countries to take part in the events of this Pastoral Visit and to renew and strengthen, as on so many other occasions, the close bonds of communion and love between their particular Churches and the Church in Cuba. In this greeting, my heart goes out with great affection also to the beloved priests, deacons, men and women religious, catechists and faithful, to whom I belong in the Lord as Shepherd and Servant of the Universal Church…“With confidence in the Lord and feeling very close to the beloved sons and daughters of Cuba, I thank you with all my heart for this warm welcome with which my Pastoral Visit is beginning. I commend this visit to the maternal protection of the Blessed Virgin of Charity of El Cobre. I cordially bless you all, especially the poor, the sick, the neglected and all those suffering in body or spirit. Praised be Jesus Christ!”The Pope issued a declaration on December 5, 1998, announcing the establishment of a new archdiocese with an archbishop there. This is that Bull, with the Pope’s signature and the original seal. ""Document signed, Rome, December 15, 1998, ""Johannes Paulus."" ""Seeking to provide for the greater spiritual good of their own Christian faithful, the Venerable Brothers of the sacred, Bishops of the ecclesiastical province of Saint Jacob in Cuba, having heard from the Conference of Bishops of that Nation, unanimously have requested from our Apostolic See that, because of the deducting of certain territories from the aforementioned Province, which stands out in terms of the number of faithful and number of suffragan dioceses, a new Ecclesiastical Province be established and, at the same time, the name of the same diocese be elevated to the status of an Archdiocese [with the appointment of a new archbishop]. We truly, with a preexisting prayer in favor by the Venerable Brother Benjamin Stella, with the title of Midilensis Archbishop and in the same nation of the Apostolic messenger, on the Counsel for Bishops, we think that these prayers put forth ought to be taken up. With our highest Apostolic power, we declare the following. We raise the Camaguensis episcopal seat, separated from the metropolitan rule of the Church of Saint Jacob in Cuba to the status of Archiepiscopalis Metropolitanae Church, by the authority given through the norms of common law. Let a new ecclesiastical province be formed, consisting of a metropolitan church of the same name and the dioceses of Ciego de Ávila, Cienfuegos, and Santa Clara, which until now have belonged to the Ecclesiastical Province of Santiago in Cuba. We now elevate the Camagüeyan prelate to archiepiscopal rank and invest him with this status. Its present Bishop, our Venerable Brother Adolfo Rodríguez Herrera, we promote to archiepiscopal dignity and the rank of Metropolitan, with all rights granted and all obligations imposed. To accomplish these matters we appoint our Venerable Brother Beniamino Stella, as mentioned above, granting him the powers necessary and appropriate, including that of subdelegating for the purpose in question any man established in ecclesiastical dignity, with the obligation laid upon him of sending an authentic copy of the document recording the completion of the execution to the Congregation for Bishops. Accordingly, we decree that this is to be held valid, with all things whatsoever to the contrary notwithstanding.""This is our first ever Bull of Pope John Paul II, or indeed of any pope. It is extraordinary that it relates to the successful outreach to Cuba - which was then a communist country promoting atheism, and to the establishment of an Archdiocese there.

Description
Characters represented are Leontes, Hermione, Paulina, Perdita, and the Shepherd and his Son. On light wove paper. Sheet size 355 x 270 mm. Slightly worn. Together with: A single sheet containing 3 sketches for set designs for the production. "The Winter's Tale is a play by William Shakespeare originally published in the First Folio of 1623. Although it was grouped among the comedies, many modern editors have relabelled the play as one of Shakespeare's late romances. Some critics consider it to be one of Shakespeare's "problem plays" because the first three acts are filled with intense psychological drama, while the last two acts are comic and supply a happy ending. The play has been intermittently popular, having been revived in productions and adaptations by some of the leading theatre practitioners in Shakespearean performance history. In the mid-18th century, after a long interval without major performances, David Garrick premiered his adaptation Florizel and Perdita (first performed in 1753 and published in 1756). The Winter's Tale was revived again in the 19th century, when the fourth "pastoral" act was widely popular. In the second half of the 20th century, The Winter's Tale was often performed in its entirety, drawn largely from the First Folio text, with varying degrees of success." Wikipedia Perdziola, an internationally-recognized set and costume designer for theater, opera, and ballet, has worked extensively throughout the United States at such venues as the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Lyric Theatre of Chicago, American Ballet Theater, Shakespeare Theater in Washington, Boston Ballet, and Miami Ballet, as well as for various Broadway productions. He has also worked internationally for productions at the Monte Carlo Opera, the Niedersächsische Staatsorchester in Hannover, the Garsington Opera in the United Kingdom, the Finnish National Ballet, the Saito Kinen Festival in Japan, and the Sydney Opera House. The artist has received three Helen Hayes awards and a Helpmann award; he has also been nominated for numerous additional awards.

1 page. Small quarto. Dated April 27th 1915. In black ink, signed in full. With "Hotel Gotham" embossed at head. "Dear Miss Wolff, I thank you very much for your contribution to the Polish Relief Fund." Laid down to mounting sheet. Sembrich, a distinguished Polish-born American soprano, was one of the Metropolitan Opera's most treasured artists. "Sembrich was one of the greatest sopranos in history. Like Patti (who became a staunch friend), she combined a dazzling technique with the purest lyricism. Her scale was perfectly matched over a range from c′ to f‴. In addition to Lucia, her most popular roles were Violetta, Gilda and Rosina; she was also a leading interpreter of Mozart and was admired for her Zerlina, Susanna and the Queen of Night. Her repertory also included two Wagner roles, Elsa (Lohengrin) and Eva (Die Meistersinger), and Puccini's Mimì. She was the 'musicians' singer' of her time, and she enjoyed playing chamber music with such friends as the members of the Flonzaley Quartet, or two-piano music, often with Paderewski." Philip L. Miller in Grove Music Online Paderewski wrote a moving appeal for support of those affected by the ravages of World War I on behalf of the Polish Relief Committee in 1915. 1960. California protest press photo archive documenting antiwar, anti nuclear, and student civil disobedience demonstrations during the height of Cold War anxiety and the emerging student protest culture of the 1960s. The group captures demonstrators participating in nuclear disarmament activism, mass public protest, and sit in actions connected to broader fears surrounding atomic weapons and militarization in the years following the Korean War and during escalating East West tensions. These photos record early postwar protest movements before the larger anti Vietnam demonstrations that would dominate the later 1960s. Archive of 4 black and white press photographs, each approximately 8" x 10", California, May and October 1960. One image records demonstrators carrying signs reading "End the Arms Race" and "Ban the Bomb" during a large anti nuclear gathering. Another shows crowds assembled outside a civic building with placards advocating peace and nuclear disarmament. A third photograph captures police physically removing a female sit in demonstrator from a building during a University of California Berkeley protest, with the typed caption identifying her as "Gili Studeburg," age 18, dragged from Sproul Hall after refusing to leave during a sit in occupation. The reverse sides retain agency credit stamps, typed caption sheets, editorial markings, and cropping instructions in grease pencil and colored pencil, including notations reading "Free Speech Movement" and publication notes. The archive falls within the transitional moment between 1950s nuclear anxiety and the explosion of student protest movements that reshaped American political culture during the 1960s. Public demonstrations against atomic weapons accelerated after the hydrogen bomb tests of the 1950s, while campus sit ins and direct action tactics became increasingly central to student activism in California. The Sproul Hall arrest scene is especially notable, anticipating the Berkeley Free Speech Movement and later antiwar occupations that would make university campuses focal points of political confrontation throughout the decade. Light handling wear, editorial markings, minor corner wear, and scattered toning to versos; captions and stamps remain clear and legible. Overall in good condition.
