Description
New York: Jerome Rothenberg & David Antin, 1966. First Edition. Near Fine. First edition. The third issue of the literary and arts magazine. [80] pp. Bound in publisher's decorative wraps designed by Andy Warhol consisting of a series of perforated "Bomb Hanoi" stickers, intact. A list of contributors printed on the rear cover includes Margaret Randall added with a rubber-stamp cancel. Near Fine with light rubbing and soiling to covers, edges faintly toned with small closed tear to rear at top corner. A scarce issue featuring Charles Bukowski's poem "Drawing of a Band Concert on a Matchbox", works by Allen Ginsberg and Gerard Malanga. Warhol's cover employed a popular right-wing slogan, "Bomb Hanoi," to grab the attention of those who supported the war. The cover's perforated, glue-backed stamps that were intentionally designed to be torn out and pasted on public surfaces, transforming the work into a usable piece of street-level protest art.

Description
Washington, D.C.: N.P., 1959. Very good. 10¾” x 8 3/8”. Thin card stapled wrappers. Pp. ii, 67. Very good: wrappers lightly toned with a few small stains. This is a history of Iota Phi Lambda (IPL), the first African American business sorority. Replete with photographic images, the book is a thorough source of reference data and information about the group and some of its most important women leaders. IPL was founded by Lola Mercedes Parker in Chicago in 1929 “to seek greater opportunities for the Ne*ro business woman.” According to the book, “the Greek letters, IOTA PHI LAMBDA, were chosen because of their meaning – Ideals of Friendship and Love.” There are now more than 100 chapters of IPL in 85 cities and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The sorority's website lists their goals, including to: “Unite in sisterhood qualified business and professional women in order to enhance and improve the status of women in our highly complex, competitive business and professional world; Promote increased interest in the broad field of business education among high school and college young women through planned programs and scholarships; Encourage the development of personal goals and leadership potential; and Establish and promote civic and social service activities for youth and adults.” This book is divided into two sections, and contains a table of contents for each. The first section concerns the founding of IPL, its operating structure, initiatives and accomplishments. It provides biographies of Parker, “this woman with such lofty ideals and love for her fellowman,” as well as charter members and national presidents. There is information about various IPL programs such as American Education Week, Ne*ro History Week and Founder's Day. Eleven pages are dedicated to a history of the sorority's national conventions. The book covers the IPL publications as well as content on IPL's affiliations with important organizations such as the National Council of Ne*ro Women. The book's second section provides founding dates and locations for IPL chapters as well as lists of honorary members and long rosters of past national officers. There are 55 photographic images in the book, many of which take up half a page or more. Some notable shots depict founder Lola Parker, other pioneers of IPL and the current executive board. Other great images depict the “Future Iota Girls Club” of Booker T. Washington high school in New Orleans, and a group of women viewing the IPL exhibit at the American Ne*ro Exhibition in 1940. We see sorors receiving awards, members at conferences, and women working on a legislative strategy panel. There are also portraits of “a few of the outstanding sorors” selected from among IPL's “galaxy of trained women.” A well written and highly detailed history of this important African American women's organization. OCLC shows 6 holdings over two entries.

Description
One page, 8vo. Four lines in Toklas's fine, miniscule hand. On her stationary. In fine condition. Alice B. Toklas writes to Drue Parsons anticipating her upcoming visit. Parsons was married to Geoffrey Parsons, chief editorial writer of the New York Herald Tribune from 1924 to 1952. Toklas writes: “Virgil Thomson has just told me that you were kind enough to say that you would come to see me on Thursday afternoon. It will give me the greatest pleasure to meet you and to see Mr. Parsons again. He will not remember but we met briefly in New York in thirty four. Until next Thursday then, [...] Cordially, A.B. Toklas Alice B. Toklas was living in Paris in 1952. She went on to publish ‘The Alice B. Toklas Cookbook,’ the first of her two books, in 1954. Toklas had lived with her partner Gertrude Stein in Paris since 1907; Stein died in 1946. Drue Parsons, born Dorothy Blackman, spent her early career in the 1930s as an actress with the stage name Drue Leyton. Leyton joined the resistance movement in France in the 1930s and 40s. It is likely that Toklas and Leyton met, or at least became familiar with each other, in Paris in 1942, when many American women were threatened with internment by the Vichy government. Drue Leyton was incarcerated in the Bois de Boulogne along with Sylvia Beach, the first publisher of Ulysses and a close friend of Stein and Toklas. (Charles Glass, Americans in Paris: Life and Death Under Nazi Occupation, 2011, pp. 82). The letter refers to Virgil Thomson, composer and prominent music critic. Thomson was music critic for the New York Herald-Tribune from 1940-1954. He and Geoffrey Parsons worked at the magazine together for six of these years. Thomson also composed the score for “Four Saints in Three Acts,” an opera for which Gertrude Stein wrote the libretto. “Four Saints in Three Acts” premiered in 1934, first in Connecticut and then in New York. The encounter with Geoffrey Parsons that Toklas mentions would likely have occurred around the premiere: both Toklas and Stein traveled to the United States to attend.
