Description
Numerous hand-colored maps & illus. 15 parts in seven vols. Large 8vo (270 x 187 mm.), orig. semi-stiff wrappers, new stitching. [Japan]: before 1845. The third Tokugawa shogun, Iemitsu (r. 1623-51), the first born to the rule, spent much of his reign centralizing power in Edo, with the bakufu growing in importance as administrators and setters of policy. In 1645, the bakufu ordered all fiefdom lords who owned castles to make a shiro ezu, a detailed account of the structure of each castle; a gocho, which is akin to a census of their daimyo; and kuni ezu, maps of each area. These reports were compiled again in 1697. This is an invaluable and beautiful record of that famous survey of all the major feudal castles of Japan. This work was never printed but versions with different titles were frequently copied. Our volumes depict, in rich color, overhead views of about 150 feudal castles that existed in 1697 (many still stand today), along with several idealized castles. The preliminary text of the first volume provides a color guide to the drawings: red for stone walls; yellow for roads or empty areas; blue for filled moats, rivers, oceans, etc.; purple for empty moats; black for watchtowers; green for ditches, mounds, fields, and mountains; pink for commercial and residential areas outside of the castle proper; and white for the residences of samurai. Shrines, stables, and other buildings within the castle grounds are also labeled. Each castle is labeled with its name, region, and fiefdom and, oftentimes, dimensions. For each castle, a brief history is provided, mentioning ownership, when built and/or reconstructed, affiliations with shoguns, etc. Some of the most famous depicted include the castles of Nijo, Hikone, Osaka, Kameyama, Nagoya, Inuyama, Odawara, Mito, Kanazawa, Himeji, and many others. Curiously, while Edo Castle is discussed and described, there is no image of it. Could this be for security reasons? Fine copy, minor worming and dampstaining, preserved in a chitsu.

Description
No place identified: No photographer identified, No date [c. late 19th c.]. No binding, photograph. Very good +. [TINTYPE PHOTOGRAPH] [MELAINOTYPE] [FERROTYPE.] 3 ½" x 5"; image is clear; japanned verso; light scratching to surface; very good plus. A tintype or ferrotype photograph of five young women and three young men, most likely taken during the 1890s based on the clothing style. Three men, two in Bowler or derby style hats and suits buttoned high. First introduced in England in the 1840s and considered formal wear, the Bowler was worn by working classes by the late 19th century. The women are dressed in suits with short jackets, a style that emerged in the late 1880s and went on to be a men's wear craze during the 1890s and well into the 1910s. Each person's outfit suggests the wealth of the upper class. Other types of photography had been developed and perfected by the late 19th century, but the tintype remained a sturdy, inexpensive and quickly developed alternative.

Light to moderate foxing and browning throughout. First Edition. Göthel p. 203 (this issue without "L'Imprimerie de Breitkopf et Härtel à Leipsic" to foot of title). "Regarded by many contemporaries as worthy of a place beside Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven in the pantheon of the greatest composers, he has, together with Gluck and Cherubini, been allotted a considerably lower status by posterity ... His own work looks, Janus-like, towards both the formalism and clarity of the Classical tradition, and the structural and harmonic experimentation associated with 19th-century Romanticism." Clive Brown in Grove Music Online.

Description
Paris: Amis d'E. Armand], 1950. First Edition. 12mo (19cm). Pictorial paper wrappers consisting of folded sheets, unstapled as issued; 24pp. Cover portrait of Mackay by F. Cotard. Tight, clean copy; minute chips to extremities, else about Fine in original wrappers. One thousand copies printed, "edition réservée aux 'Amis d'E. Armand.'" This appears to be a loose translation of Riley's bio-bibliographical essay on Mackay, "New England Anarchism in Germany," which first appeared in the New England Quarterly in March 1945. The translation is by the noted French individualist anarchist Émile Armand (1907-1964). Interestingly, Armand seems to eliminate any reference to the influence of Benjamin Tucker on Mackay's work, thus rather altering the central thesis of Riley's original essay. Text entirely in French.
