Description
Boston: Geo. C. Rand & Avery, 1859. First edition. First edition, first printing. 140 pp. Bound in publisher's elaborately blind stamped brown cloth, spine lettered in gilt, coated yellow endpapers. Very Good, spine lean, cloth sunned and a little stained, lettering rubbed and cloth worn at tips, binding holding but some page gatherings proud and hinges cracked; occasional stains, wear, and foxing to contents. Gift inscription on front free endpaper in pencil. An unsophisticated copy of an extremely rare, sought-after book, both in the trade and at auction: the last copy at auction was in 1990. Suffice to say, the opportunity for anyone to purchase a first edition of this novel may not come again for many years. This autobiographical novel was famously rediscovered by scholar Henry Louis Gates in 1981 and was long regarded as the first novel published by a woman of African descent in North America. Gates writes in his introduction to the reprint that the author, Harriet Wilson, "seems to have published it herself (though with some assistance from unknown patrons)," which undoubtedly contributed to its scarcity. Published just two years before the start of the Civil War, "it stands as a hallmark of American literary history," Gates continues, and "it subtly combines compelling storytelling with unflinching indictments of Northern antiblack racism" as well as the institution of slavery.

Pisa: Dallas Tipografia Nistri, 1868. 91,[1]pp. Original printed wrappers. Minor chipping and partial separations along spine, light edge wear, ownership signature on front wrapper and ink inscription on front flyleaf. Very good. A scarce Italian work on indigenous American linguistics, one of only seventy copies printed "e non sono in commercio." According to Pilling, the work was taken "From a manuscript of the Cardinal Mezzofanti, with an appendix.... The Notes, without the appendix, were first printed in the Annali della Universita di Pisa, 1868, vol. 10. Mainly devoted to South American languages, but contains a brief discussion and a few examples of Algonkin and Iroquois." The latter appear on pages 14-22 beginning with a passage headed, "Grammaire algonquine" and concluding with a discussion of Cardinal Mezzofanti's experiences learning indigenous California dialects from a manuscript brought to Italy by Catholic missionaries. Mezzofanti was a hyperpolyglot who reportedly knew, or was at least conversant in, at least thirty-eight and perhaps as many as fifty languages. OCLC records just six institutional copies of the present work in the United States, at the Bancroft, Trinity College, Gordon College, the Newberry, Harvard, and Penn. The title translates roughly to Unpublished Essays on American Language, with Bibliographical Notes. Pilau 331258. Pilling 3832. Leclerc 2091. Streit II:23.

Description
[ Philadelphia: Women's Committee to Oppose Conscription, 1945-1947] The documents include a mimeographed letter on Women's Committee to Oppose Conscription letterhead calling for support for an anti-conscription constitutional amendment (dated December 3, 1945); and four letters (dated between June 1946 and April 1947) opposing the Selective Service System and proposed legislation for mandatory military training during peacetime. One of the letters addresses the censorship of anti-conscription sentiment expressed by soldiers, who were forbidden "under threat of court martial" from sending anti-conscription letters to the War Department. Five documents (8 " x 11") and two printed postcards (5 " x 3 "). The documents include four mimeographed letters to members (three one-page letters, one two-page letter, and one four-page letter) on Women's Committee to Oppose Conscription (WCOC) letterhead and a four-page voter guide. The postcards are both addressed by hand to Mr. and Mrs. W.B. Rovner. Minor toning. In near fine condition. In 1942, Quaker pacifist and feminist Mildred S. Olmsted (1890 – 1990) founded the Committee to Oppose the Conscription of Women to challenge the Austin-Wadsworth Bill of 1943, which proposed the conscription of men aged 18-65 and women aged 18-50 for assignment to military industry anywhere in the country. Once the immediate threat of drafting women had passed, the organization was renamed to the Women's Committee to Oppose Conscription and focused more broadly on anti-conscription and pacifist efforts. During World War I, Olmsted worked in Paris with the Young Women's Christian Organization to plan recreational activities for soldiers stationed there. After the war, she joined the American Friends Service Committee in Berlin, where she worked in famine relief. She was a leader in the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, a founder of the pacifist and anti-nuclear warfare organization SANE (now Peace Action), the vice-chair of the Pennsylvania ACLU, and a member of the United Nations Council of Non-Governmental Organizations and the Main Line Birth Control League.

From wikipedia: The 91st Infantry Division (famously nicknamed as the "Wild West Division"[2] with a "Fir Tree" as its Division insignia to symbolize its traditional home of the Far West[3]) is an infantry division of the United States Army that fought in World War I and World War II. From 1946 until 2008, it was part of the United States Army Reserve. It was briefly inactivated from 2008 until 2010 when it was elevated back to a division size element as the 91st Training Division (Operations).[1] Constituted on 5 August 1917 at Camp Lewis, Washington, near Tacoma, the division, commanded by Major General Henry Alexander Greene, soon thereafter departed for England in the summer of 1918. In September 1918, the division's first operation was in the St. Mihiel Offensive in France. Serving under the U.S. Army's V Corps, the division, now commanded by Major General William Johnston Jr., fought in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive and successfully helped to destroy the German First Guard Division and continued to smash through three successive enemy lines.[1][4] Twelve days before the end of World War I, the division, as part of the VII Corps of the French Sixth Army, helped drive the Germans east across the Escaut River in the Battle of the Lys and the Escaut. The division was awarded separate campaign streamers for its active role in the Lorraine, Meuse-Argonne and Ypres-Lys campaigns.[1][4] In 1919, the 91st was inactivated at the Presidio of San Francisco. The Division was composed of the following units:[5][6][7][8][9] • Headquarters, 91st Division • 181st Infantry Brigade 361st Infantry Regiment 362nd Infantry Regiment 347th Machine Gun Battalion [10] 347th Machine Gun Battalion [10] • 182nd Infantry Brigade 363rd Infantry Regiment 364th Infantry Regiment 348th Machine Gun Battalion • 166th Field Artillery Brigade 346th Field Artillery Regiment (75 mm) 347th Field Artillery Regiment (4.7") 348th Field Artillery Regiment (155 mm) 316th Trench Mortar Battery • 346th Machine Gun Battalion • 316th Engineer Regiment • 316th Medical Regiment • 316th Field Signal Battalion • Headquarters Troop, 91st Division • 316th Train Headquarters and Military Police 316th Ammunition Train 316th Supply Train 316th Engineer Train 316th Sanitary Train 361st, 36nd, 363rd, and 364th Ambulance Companies and Field Hospitals Notable members of the unit included former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Earl Warren.
