Description
Faulkner 's long and detailed interest in sailing is reflected in this unusual and rare letter written about 1948, shortly before he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. He likely wrote from Oxford, Mississippi. Faulkner discusses the changes he wants for his small sloop and illustrates how he wanted to refit the sails. After offering his own ideas, he asks for advice from his corespondent, Eric James Devine. Faulkner sketches the "New Sail" he wants for his boat and explains that, "a Navy bloke" his Marine fighter pilot nephew knows will, "make me a suit of sails out of airplane linen, a little lighter than the present canvas. They wont [sic] cost me anything...then I shall take the old jib and try to rig some kind of skysail, maybe turn it upside down, a balloon spkr, something like that. What do you think will happen...Sketch me a rig on paper, will you? My own idea herewith...." He labels two parts of his drawing in pencil. Faulkner suggests a gift of a pipe to Devine in the last paragraph and signs in pencil, "Bill." The illustration was likely intended to clarify the writer's own words, although he didn't win the prize until the year after he wrote our letter. A photograph of Faulkner in his sailboat accompanies the letter. Condition: center fold is prominent and in tact, other folds visible. Letter measures 8 x 11 inches and floats on a dark gray mat overlaid with a white mat, framed in black satin finished wood, matted and framed in museum quality materials, framed in 5/8/inch black satin wood. Frame measures 16 x 18 3/4/inches and the photo measures 8 x 10 inches, in pocket on back of frame. Faulkner's novel, "Intruder in the Dust" came out in 1948, and was made into a film the following year, 1949, the same year he won the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Description
NA. Very Good. The letter is both substantive, relating very clearly to the printing process to be used on some project and perhaps more generally, and to a frequent collaborator with Cruikshank, in all probability. We can't say that the letter is entirely lucid to us, and there would be no reason it would have to be, as regular correspondents have their own private language and shorthand, so to speak. As the letter was surely dashed off quickly, it isn't written with the care something meant for publication would be. We can see from the letter, though, that Cruikshank was articulate and erudite generally. We can also see, arguably, why he is remembered for his artwork rather than being a "man of letters". Here are the words of the letter verbatim" "My dear Horace, I am compelled to go out this morning but should be at your service anytime after three [today (? -- word unclear but clearly his intent] to go into this golden notion of ours of which, my fear is, that I shall never move much --for although I certainly have -- and can move "a little below" -- out of copper or steel -- of gold, I have made "[less] than nothing" and I begin to think that there is some mysterious nefarious agent between that metal and the hair of . . . Your [truly,] Geo. Cruikshank." On the side of and below Cruikshank's signature is the following postscript (without the signalling of such with a "P.S."). "Walter Phillips has returned from Paris and is burning to see you - he will be here this afternoon." Horace Mayhew, to whom this letter almost certainly was sent, was a collaborator of Cruikshank's. Mayhew (1816-1872) was a journalist, a contributor to "Punch", and most pertinently, a frequent Cruikshank collaborator, contributing to Cruikshank's "Table Talk", the Comic Almanacs, of which he was an editor, and the author of the choice Cruikshank work, "The Toothache". among other things. It is unknown what exactly the two were working on when this letter was written. The letter is on a single folded sheet measuring 18 by 11 cm. It is folded horizontally in the center and again, a quarter of the way down. The paper is a bit age toned around the edges, where there are also a few light, inconsequential stains and two shallow chips or incursions into the paper. The letter has no loss of content, and in our view, easily legible, except a few words that are difficult to make out given Cruikshank's handwriting in those instances.

A near fine copy, with only minor scuffing to printed wrappers and a remarkably fresh and tight binding.
Description
Köln: Verlag der Buchhandlung Walther König, 1988. A near fine copy, with only minor scuffing to printed wrappers and a remarkably fresh and tight binding.. First Edition. Small Octavo. SIGNED by Kippenberger to rear wrapper and dated in the year of publication. One of Martin Kippenberger's most perceptive—and beloved—artist's books, fully-illustrated after black-and-white street photographs that he captured during his travels through Brazil and Spain. His documentation of uncanny moments from the built environment would signal a development in his own sculptural practice, with his first street lamps executed in the same year. The wrappers represent an inversion of the unmistakable cover design from Merve Verlag, with whom the book was originally supposed to be published, as something of a sequel to Kippenberger's earlier Frauen. (Koch 63).

Description
London, Edinburgh & Boston: T. N. Foulis, (1914). An octavo of 103 pp. with eight color plates by Alfred Rawlings mounted on heavy stock, and 36 drawings by Warrington Hogg of notable sundials. White paper over boards with marvelous cover illustrations in vivid colors by Jessie M. King. Top edge green. A companion volume to Corners Of Grey Old Gardens, this is considered by many to one of the finest examples of Jessie King's inimitable style. Having become quite scarce of late, particularly in the First Edition, this is a handsome and satisfying copy. There is a modest contemporary signature in the corner of the front pastedown and some very minor soiling and wear. A small bit of old cello tape is at the bottom of the spine ( 1/2" x 1.5"), not particularly detracting. Offsetting from paper on the front free endpaper. Overall, the book requires few apologies, with the boards and gilt exceptionally bright and the contents clean and free from foxing. White 111.
