Description
1872. First Edition. (LONDON) DORÉ, Gustave and JERROLD, Blanchard. London: A Pilgrimage. London: Grant, 1872. Large folio (13-1/2 by 17 inches), contemporary three-quarter red morocco, raised bands, marbled boards and endpapers, top edge gilt. $5800.First edition of Doré and Jerrold's London, ""superb, and noble in sentiment"" (van Gogh), with 54 striking full-page wood-engravings and 126 in-text vignettes of ""all segments of London society"" by Doré. Handsomely bound.""One can hardly deny that Doré is not merely one of the most popular but also one of the greatest of all illustrators… Perhaps Taine summed up Doré's appeal most eloquently: 'every imagination appeared languid in comparison with his. For energy, force, superabundance, originality, sparkle, and gloomy grandeur, I know only one equal to his— that of Tintoretto'… Doré's devastating realization of the contrast of wealth and poverty in a modern metropolis makes London one of the great illustrated books of the world. The English edition antedates the French by four years, and indeed it is a handsomer book"" (Ray, 327-29). ""By 1872, Doré was the most popular artist in England, illustrator or painter. This work was eagerly awaited by the English public, having been postponed by the Franco-Prussian War… The idea was to match Doré's artistic genius with an in-depth view of all segments of London society—the rich and the poor, the common people at work and play, famous sites and slums, nobility and criminals, Many were the days and nights that Doré went in disguise, with undercover policemen for protection, to see parts of London not listed in any tour guide… The result was a book often hailed as the greatest visual expression of the social class struggle ever published"" (Malan, 127). ""The other day,"" once wrote Vincent van Gogh, ""I saw a complete set of Doré's pictures of London. I tell you it is superb, and noble in sentiment."" Indeed, Van Gogh based his 1890 painting ""En Prison,"" or ""Prisoner's Round"" on Doré's illustration ""Newgate Exercise Yard,"" which appears on page 136. There were two sizes issued by Grant in 1872, albeit without a huge difference between the two: one with the text block measuring 12-1/2 by 16 inches, and another at 13 by 16-1/2 inches. This copy is from the larger of the two issues. Malan, 281. Plates and text clean, corners somewhat rubbed. A few closed tears to first few leaves and tissue guard. A near-fine copy.

1789. First Edition. WHITE, Gilbert. The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne. London: T. Bensley for B. White, 1789. Quarto, contemporary marbled boards rebacked in calf-gilt, red morocco spine label, uncut. Housed in a custom chemise and full morocco pull-off box. $4200.First edition of this ""solitary classic of natural history,"" with folding frontispiece panoramic view of Selborne and six engravings (one folding) by Peter Mazell and Daniel Lerpinire after drawings by Samuel Grimm. An uncut copy in orginal marbled boards.""For some twenty years or more, White wrote a series of letters to Thomas Pennant and Daines Barrington, giving a remarkable account of the chief instances of the special habits of animals and of natural phenomena which he was daily observing… Selborne may be obscure; but it is a beautiful village in a beautiful country eminently suited for the purpose of White in making it the center of a life's work of zoological research and observation… His Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne holds a unique position in English literature as the solitary classic of natural history… The book was immediately popular both with the general public and with all naturalists, many of the most eminent of which class have successively edited it with additional and corroborative notes"" (Cambridge History X, Chapter XI, Section 16). ""He seems to have lived before the Fall. His volumes are the journal of Adam in Paradise"" (Lowell). White's epistolary and poetic observations, among the earliest examples of modern phenology, are illustrated by Samuel Heironymus Grimm, who over a 20-year period was also employed by antiquarian Sir Richard Kaye, as his travel companion assigned to record ""everything curious"" that they discovered on their journeys. Description
1752. First Edition. FIELDING, Henry. Amelia. London: Printed for A. Millar, 1752. Four volumes. Small octavo, early 20th-century full tan calf, raised bands, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, brown and russet morocco spine labels, all edges gilt. $3000.First edition of Fielding’s final novel, his landmark work that introduced the novelistic tradition of “social protest and reform.” Handsomely bound by Riviere and Son.Fielding's last novel, Amelia, shows the ""mellowness, pathos, and insight"" of a mature writer whose humor and ""realistic frankness… shocked the 19th century but delighted his century and delights ours… Fielding stands at least shoulder to shoulder with the great Victorian novelists whose spiritual father he was"" (Kunitz & Haycraft, 190). ""An innovating master of the highest originality,"" Fielding's comic epics were ""the first modern novels in English"" (Drabble, 348). Samuel Johnson lavished unexpected praise on the novel, for though he earlier called the ""author of Tom Jones 'a blockhead' and a barren rascal,"" he read Amelia through at one sitting and observed that this was a publishing event so anticipated that it was ""perhaps the only book, which being printed off betimes one morning, a new edition was called for before night."" Johnson's story about Amelia's publication and the novel's immediate popularity was not, however, entirely accurate. Yet the anecdote was so popular that it was ""accepted by every student of the novel's publishing history until 1953, when, in a deft piece of bibliographical analysis, Professor Todd [in ""Three Notes on Fielding""] set the record straight. Johnson's account… squares not at all with the printing history of Amelia"" (Battestin, lvii, xlviii). For despite subsequent critical praise that views Amelia as a forerunner of realism and a work that ""established the tradition… of the novel of social protest and reform,"" Johnson's high regard did not reflect the general response of the time (Battestin & Probyn, eds., Correspondence of Henry and Sarah Fielding, vi). ""The audience at mid-century was ill prepared either for the kind of realism Fielding here attempted, or for the disturbing moral and social purpose it was calculated to serve… Even those who wished him well were puzzled, and a little embarrassed, that he could so willfully disregard the proprieties of polite literature"" (Battestin, liv-lv). ""Amelia was published on Thursday, 19 December 1751, a day later than originally expected—though, in accord with the usual printer's practice in the period for works not ready to be issued before November, the title-page carries the date of the ensuing year, 1752"" (Battestin, xlvii). Due to the expected high demand for the novel, two printers were used: William Strahan for Volumes I & III, and an unknown printer for Volumes II and IV. Minor press variants exist, with no distinguishing characteristics noted and no priority established. Two impressions of the first edition were made, one in December 1751, the other in January 1752. Copies are reported to exist in two states with no precedence confirmed: i.e. that of an uncorrected inner forme backed by a corrected outer forme, or a corrected inner forme backed by an uncorrected outer forme. With advertisement of ""The Universal-Register-Office"" in Volume II. Battestin: Appendix VII, 583-586 & Appendix VIII. Cross III:321. Lowndes, 797. Rothschild 853. Owner signatures.Interiors bright and clean. Front joint of Volume I repaired. A lovely set in near-fine condition.

Description
1850. First Edition. (SLAVERY) SMITH, Gerrit. Substance of the Speech Made by Gerrit Smith, in the Capitol of the State of New York, March 11th and 12th, 1850. Albany: Jacob T. Hazen, 1850. Octavo, period-style half calf gilt, marbled boards; pp. (1-3), 4-25, (26-27), 28-30. $1500.First edition of the bold abolitionist's Speech proclaiming the Constitution ""does not allow the three million of our colored countrymen to be held in slavery,"" a close friend of Frederick Douglass, who ""openly embraced Smith's version of an antislavery interpretation of the Constitution,"" delivered the same decade as John Brown's Harpers Ferry raid, substantially financed by Smith.Smith, a wealthy philanthropist, was ""among the most outspoken"" of white abolitionists (Jackson, Force and Freedom, 65). Once linked to William Lloyd Garrison's view of the Constitution as a ""covenant with death,"" Smith split from Garrison and became a founder of both the Liberty Party and its successor, the Radical Abolitionist Party. He was, as well, key in forging a close interracial alliance between Frederick Douglass, Black abolitionist and physician James McCune Smith, and John Brown. The four men shared the goal of achieving ""a 'radical change' in government."" By the early 1850s, Douglass ""openly embraced Smith's version of an antislavery interpretation of the Constitution"" (Blight, 213). To Smith, Douglass, and figures as Alvan Stewart and Lysander Spooner, ""the Constitution empowered—even required—Congress to abolish slavery in the southern states by direct legislation… As an editor, Douglass had always engaged with national politics. Now the federal authority at the base of slavery's stranglehold on America became his intensive focus"" (Blight, 214; emphasis in original). This very scarce first edition captures the force of Smith's groundbreaking 1850 Speech and clearly demonstrates the breadth of his constitutional argument. Declaring ""law is for the protection of rights—not for the destruction of rights"" (emphasis in original), he cites passages in the Declaration and Bill of Rights, and addresses the pivotal ""three-fifths"" clause. Smith proclaims the Founding Fathers did not intend ""to make this whole land the slaveholder's hunting ground,"" and asserts the Constitution ""does not allow the three million of our colored countrymen to be held in slavery."" He would use his wealth to help establish a Black settlement at North Elba, N.Y., which was ""John Brown's permanent residence from 1854 until his death"" (Stauffer, Black Hearts, 3). After Harpers Ferry and Brown's execution, Smith faced demands that he be tried as an ""accessory after the fact."" While he ""publicly denied it, Smith gave warm encouragement and financial assistance"" to Brown and the Harpers Ferry insurrection. Yet ""guilt over the failure of Brown's raid and fear of possible arrest as a co-conspirator caused Smith to commit himself to the Utica State Lunatic Asylum"" (ANB). In time, he publicly retreated from his Radical Abolitionist stance and died in 1874. Sabin 82670. A fine copy.

Description
1839. First Edition. (CRUIKSHANK, George). AINSWORTH, William Harrison. Jack Sheppard. A Romance. London: Richard Bentley, 1839. Three volumes. Octavo, original green cloth, uncut. $1200.First edition, with over two dozen etchings by Cruikshank, with an autograph letter bound into volume I from Ainsworth to the publisher inviting him to dine and mentioning Charles Dickens.Jack Sheppard was a brilliant, violent thief who gained a great deal of notoriety during his brief career in London. ""He became a legend in his own lifetime and has remained one ever since… [according to] contemporary literature and legal reports [he was] a personality of enormous charm, wit and courage whose vitality inspired widespread devotion and admiration. Nonetheless, a facile and strangely warped intelligence made of Jack Sheppard an extraordinarily successful thief and gaolbreaker. His appeal as a popular hero was such that when he was to be hanged at Tyburn at the age of twenty-two, upwards of 200,000 people gathered to cheer him along the way, hoping, vainly this time, that he would again make one of his spectacular escapes."" (The Road to Tyburn). ""Books and pamphlets were written about him; a pantomime at Drury Lane, called Harlequin Sheppard, was based on the story of his adventures, and so was a three-act farce, called The Prison-Breaker. Dozens of songs and glees referred to his prowess, and clergymen preached sermons about him. Sir James Thornhill, the celebrated painter who decorated the dome of St Paul's Cathedral, painted his portrait, from which engravings in mezzotinto were made"" (The Complete Newgate Calendar). In addition, Hogarth's series of twelve engravings, Industry and Idleness (1747), Gay's The Beggar's Opera (1728), W.T. Moncrieff's Jack Sheppard the House-breaker (1825), the movie Where's Jack (1969), the Thieves' Opera (1999), and the movie Jack Sheppard and Jonathan Wild (2001) were all at least partly inspired by his career. Ainsworth's novel was adapted as a successful play in the same year in which it was first published. ""Cruikshank was at his best as an interpretive illustrator in books that permitted him to exercise his talent for comic exaggeration without distorting the author's intent,"" leading him to be considered ""one of the most productive and individualistic of English illustrators"" (Hodnett, 114). See Cohn 12-13. Sadlier 14. Bound into volume I is a letter, with ""to Bentley"" [his publisher] written at the top in an unknown hand, reading: Saturday morning. My dear Sir, Will you dine with me today at six o'clock?—I expect Mr. Dickens, Mr. Maclise and some other friends. I shall be in Adelaide Street about quarter past 12 prior to going to Mr. Maclise, and I will thank you to be in the way, as I have something to say to you. —- —— W. Harrison Ainsworth."" ""Mr. Maclise"" is Daniel Maclise, an English painter and illustrator who illustrated a number of works by Dickens and became good friends with Dickens. Bookplates, including those of Lucius Wilmerding, a noted book collector and president of the Grolier Society.Interior with only infrequent faint foxing, front inner paper hinge of Volume I expertly reinforced; original cloth in excellent condition with only a bit of soiling to boards of Volume II. An exceptional copy.

Description
London: for the Society, 1900. FIRST EDITION. Complete with 18 hand-colored lithographed plates of birds by Keulemans, 2 hand-colored lithographed maps, 4 duo-tone osteological plates, and 10 text illustrations. Half morocco, with the original blue printed rear wrapper bound in at the end. From the library of Dr. James M. Dolan, Jr., curator of the San Diego Zoological Society, with his bookplate and blind-stamp on lower blank margin of first leaf. An excellent copy with only very light browning on osteological plates. First edition, as issued by the Zoological Society of London. Rothschild, with Keulemans’ exquisite plates, again outdoes himself. Rothschild was obsessed with the cassowary, a giant flightless bird with a colorful neck native to Papua New Guinea and the surrounding islands. He invested huge amounts of money in bringing the species over to England (both dead and alive) in order to study their habits, plumage, and behavior. In this monograph Rothschild describes in minute detail all species and subspecies, local names, measurements, distribution, bibliography, and all other pertinent information such as the anatomical and taxonomic information. Casey Wood refers to it as “a beautifully illustrated treatise” and Anker goes a step further by calling it “an especially profusely illustrated treatise.” The second section deals with”the relations of the Casuariidae to the remaining ‘Struthious’ forms, and the position of these with regard to the ‘Carinatae’” (introduction). Pycraft credits Rothschild for having furnished the bulk of the material for this monograph. Rothschild (1868-1937), 2nd Baron Rothschild, member of one of the world’s wealthiest familes, was a British zoologist who became a great collector and founded the Rothschild Natural History Museum in London. The Zoological Society published a number of exquisite ornithological monographs in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century; this one is considered one of the most important as well as magnificent and beautifully illustrated monograph of the period.

London: Printed for J. White by T. Bensley, 1802. Half Morocco. Very Good. 8vo. viii, 392, 300 pp. With two hand-colored ornithological plates, one of which is folding. Two other plates, one folding as well. Lovely copy of eighteenth century classic and seminal work of natural history which still makes for highly enjoyable reading. As important as the many specific observations White made is his example as a close observer of the natural world which all lovers of nature can still emulate as well as the enthusiasm and spirit he brought to the endeavor. The epistolatory form he chose, tantamount to a diary, works wonderfully stylistically by creating an intimacy between him and the reader, and thus the reader is likely to become enthralled. Minor soiling and foxing scattered in volumes. The leather is rubbed along joints, and is overall a tad on the dry side.

Description
New York: Roosevelt Hotel, or Hilton Hotels, 1953. NA. Near Fine. A cocktail menu that evokes the derring-do heroism of the 26th U.S. President with the die-cut shape of a Western saddle, just the type that Theodore Roosevelt rode from San Juan Hill to the Governorship of New York State, the Vice Presidency of the U.S. and the White House, all in the space of three years. The menu was for the restaurant in the Roosevelt Hotel that opened in 1924 on Madison Avenue and 45th Street, named in TR's honor (not FDR, who was a public figure by then, but had yet to be elected Governor, let alone President). The restaurant, the Rough Rider Room, had a wraparound mural that depicted Roosevelt's Rough Riders charging and fighting in the Spanish-American War, and this menu built on the theme. The shape also seems somehow fitting for a cocktail menu inasmuch it hints at fun to be had, and maybe also, drinking like a real man. The dimensions of this shaped, die cut folded glossy card are irregular, of course, but the maximum dimensions when closed are 27 by 20 cm, and when opened, the width extends to 40 cm. We have located other menus from the Rough Rider Room, but not cocktail menus, nor shaped menus like this one. The Hotel Roosevelt, having become rundown, closed its doors in 2020, in part a casualty of the economic dislocations caused by Covid. More recently was used by the city to shelter migrants. We could precisely date the menu because the date in printed, albeit in very small print. The cocktails seem more or less the standard ones of the day -- they aren't given names inspired by the Rough Riders, in other words. With just a half dozen exceptions, though, all the drinks are under $1, even for most of the premium Scotches. Light wear to the cover, with the glossy glassine surface blistering in a small area, a flattened crease on the back, a touch of soiling, none the least bit disconcerting.

Description
Dover, Delaware: Printed by James Kirk, 1863. First Edition. Original Sewn Wrappers. Fair binding. A report on potential military interference in the Delaware general election of 1862, published just after the announcement of the Emancipation. The Democratic party elected officials of Delaware argued that the Union troops were favoring Republican militias and party activities, and also debated whether the governor had the Constitutional right to invite Union troops into the state in the first place. This work is an example of Democratic backlash against the War and the Emancipation of the slaves, which was made possible by the President’s wartime powers. Foxing throughout. Lacking the rear and spine of the original sewn paper wrappers. Light toning to the title page. Chipping to the final page of the index, effecting the final page of the index. The complete version has been photocopied and is laid in. Dampstaining to the top left corner of the front cover and preliminaries, as well as the leading edge of the final leaves. Description
New York: Mariner, 1978. Trade Paperback. Fine. 7x5x0. NEW. 1978 Trade Paperback. 297 pp. Innovative and deeply poetic, The Waves is often regarded as Virginia Woolf's masterpiece. It begins with six children - three boys and three girls - playing in a garden by the sea, and follows their lives as they grow up, experience friendship and love, and grapple with the death of their beloved friend Percival. Instead of describing their outward expressions of grief, Woolf draws her characters from the inside, revealing their inner lives: their aspirations, their triumphs and regrets, their awareness of unity and isolation.

Description
N.p.: DC Comics, 1989. Vintage publicity photograph of director Tim Burton from the 1989 film. Richard Donner directed the highly successful superhero film "Superman" (starring Christopher Reeves) in 1978, but it was Burton's dark and semiserious anti-hero take on the DC Comic character "Batman" that would be repeatedly emulated over the next three decades, and is largely responsible for the modern day superhero film genre. "Batman" spawned three direct sequels "Batman Returns" (1989), "Batman Forever" (1995), and "Batman and Robin" (1997). Joel Schumacher took over directing the franchise after "Batman Returns," and replaced Michael Keaton's Batman with Val Kilmer and George Clooney, respectively. Director Christopher Nolan would resurrect the franchise in the highly successful "Dark Knight Trilogy" ("Batman Begins" [2005], "The Dark Knight" [2008], and "The Dark Knight Rises" [2012]) with Christian Bale in the lead. Several more films have since been spawned from the DC Comic's character universe as well as another pending re-invention ("The Batman") to be directed by Matt Reeves, with Robert Pattinson in the lead, for 2022. Winner of an Academy Award. Set in Gotham City, shot on location in Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, and London. 8 x 10 inches. Near Fine.
