Description
Accordion fold artist's book featuring one multiple by Man Ray, a blue baguette bread, on the front cover, held by a green ribbon to close the book. Also included on the book, ten silkscreen, after the artist Revolving Doors installation, in colors, three reproductions in colors, and a three folded poster in colors. This artist's book was published by Galerie Alexandre Iolas, in Paris as an exhibition catalogue for the exhibition Man Ray in 1973-1974. The blue baguette depicted on the cover was an original piece that Man Ray made in 1958 using stale bread painted blue. He later replaced it with a plaster version as the original was eaten by mice.

London: S. & J. Fuller, 1815. Alken's First Published Work The Comic Foibles of Amateur Horsemen [ALKEN, Henry]. Qualified Horses and Unqualified Riders, or the reverse of Sporting Phrases taken from the Work entitled Indispensable Accomplishments... [by] Ben Tally Ho, an occasional Visitor in Leicestershire. London: S. & J. Fuller, 1st Septr, 1815. First edition, slightly later issue with the plates watermarked J. Whatman, 1817. Oblong folio (10 5/8 x 14 1/4 inches 3/8; 270 x 362 mm.). Printed title-page and seven hand-colored engraved plates. Occasional light marginal soiling (most noticeable on first plate, otherwise bright and fresh. Mid-to-late twentieth century half red morocco over marbled boards decoratively ruled in gilt, red morocco label on front cover, lettered and tooled in gilt, smooth spine. Publisher's drab printed front wrapper bound in. Wrapper expertly repaired at edges not affecting text. An excellent copy. Alken's first hunting satire, showing how the untrained rider endangers himself, his horse and others around him. The work is an ironic sequel to Frankland's Indispensable Accomplishments, taking the Frankland "Billesdon Coplow" scenes and captions and turning them on their ear, specifically on the rider's behind as he's tossed hither and yon by a horse clearly more in control of things than the rider, who is finally carried off the field of comic disaster by his friends. The first of Alken's color plate books. "A humorous set depicting hunting accidents drawn in vigorous style. Alken's colouring is seen at its best in books of this class" (Schwerdt). The Plates: 1. Going along a slapping pace, for the very same reason, that a Criminal goes to Gaol... 2. Topping a Flight of Rails and coming into the next Field, (but not well.)... 3. Charging an Ox-fence... with good Success. 4. Got in and getting out... very clever. 5. Facing a Brook. Verifying the old Adage, look before you leap. (Watermarked J. Whatman 1817) 6. Swishing at a Rasper, from your own timidity and mismanagement... 7. Returning home in Triumph. He disdain'd a Slothful Easy Life, so took to hunting. Bobins II, 747; Schwerdt I, p. 20; Siltzer, p. 69; Tooley 44.

Brooklyn: Privately Printed / The De Vinne Press, 1887. Limited Edition. Cloth. Near fine. Beecher Memorial: Contemporaneous Tributes to the Memory of Henry Ward Beecher, the "most famous preacher in the nation," published shortly after his death in 1887. Frontispiece portrait and an illustrated plate by William H. Beard. Rubbing to spine and along edges, solid text block. Letter to the editor written on Lucretia Garfield's mourning stationery. Full text reads: "Mentor, O. / June 26th 1887 / Mr. Edward Bok / Dear Sir / Pray accept my thanks for a copy of the Beecher Memorial just received, and allow me to say that you have honored the contributors in making the book so worthy. As a tribute to the memory of Mr. Beecher, I trust it may be acceptable to his family. Very Truly Yours / Lucretia R. Garfield." Henry Ward Beecher (1813-1887) was an American social reformer, abolitionist, and influential clergyman. His sister, Harriet Beecher Stowe, achieved worldwide acclaim for her abolitionist novel Uncle Tom's Cabin. During Beecher's lifetime, his sermons focused on God's love, a notable departure from his Calvinist upbringing. He was a religious guide to multiple Republican presidents, including Abraham Lincoln, who said that no one in history had "so productive a mind." A recent work on his life by Debby Applegate, titled "The Most Famous Man in America: The Biography of Henry Ward Beecher," won the Pulitzer Prize for Biography in 2007.

Even tanning, faint foxing. The anonymous writer of this ephemeral piece accuses Dr. Manuel Bueno of holding too much power and too many titles in Popayan, and wielding both capriciously. Description
Washington, D.C.: Democratic National Committee/United Publishing Co, 1964. Very good. 8½” x 4” (folded). Single sheet measuring 8½” x 20”, printed both sides and folded to create a 10-panel pamphlet. Very good: faint offsetting to front panel; else internally bright with minimal wear. This is a rare promotional brochure for Lyndon B. Johnson's 1964 presidential campaign, focusing on “total war on prejudice and poverty.” It features great photographic images of notable Black leaders and a list of African Americans in federal positions at the time. The brochure includes an excerpt from Johnson's 1964 State of the Union message extolling the 1963 congressional session, “which did more for civil rights than the last hundred sessions combined.” The text stressed that: “All of these increased opportunities in employment, in education, in housing, and in every field, must be open to Americans of every color. As far as the writ of Federal law will run, we must abolish not some, but all racial discrimination, for this is not merely an economic issue, or a social, political, or international issue. It is a moral issue, and must be met this session by the passage of the bill now pending in the House.” Along with a cover shot of the president, the pamphlet holds five images of Johnson meeting and conferring with African American leaders such as Martin Luther King, Jr., “Mrs. Rosa Gragg of the National Association of Colored Women's Clubs and Miss Dorothy Height of the National Council of Negro Women,” Hobart Taylor of the President's Committee on Equal Employment Opportunity and Carl Rowan, Director of the United States Information Agency. The rear was dedicated to “a partial listing of federal posts held by Negro decision-makers” including U.S. attorneys and federal judges, commissioners and representatives of the White House, regulatory agencies, the District of Columbia and more – nearly 100 names in all. It also held a form to “become an enrolled member of the Democratic Party” as well as text eulogizing John F. Kennedy, “the greatest leader of our time . . . struck down by the foulest deed.” A rare and compelling piece of African American political history. OCLC shows two holdings.
