Description
1934. TELINGATER, Solomon. 1914-i. Dokumental'nyi pamflet. By Ilya Feinberg. 92, [20] pp., illustrated throughout with photomontage, and 9 full page plates including 2 foldout plates. 8vo, 250 x 180 mm., publisher's bound in black cloth, front board embossed and printed with metallic red and silver ink, preserved in a new cloth folding box. Moscow: MTP, 1934. This stunning book was published to mark the 20th anniversary of the start of the First World War. A splendid example of Telingater's skill as a book designer, combing photomontages with dramatic layout and strips of red paper with white type, tipped in throughout the book. An elaborately constructed book that is an analysis of the Great War and the international and domestic issues and events that coincided and inspired the Russian Revolution. Intricately designed with two concertina foldouts, one depicting dinosaurs. Front inner hinge repaired, otherwise very good condition.

Description
London: Printed at St. John's Gate for D. Henry, 1773. First edition. Quarter calf over marbled board, marbled edges. A good copy with faint library stamp to the general title page, lacking rear board, detached front board, spine cover loose with large chip at head, board chipped and scuffed, one leaf with chip along fore edge, off-setting from some plates on opposite leaves, one plate creased, otherwise text block tight and pages bright and clean.. [1], [2], 655. [16] pp. Illus. with 29 b/w plates and maps, 5 of which are folding. 8vo. Complete set of 12 issues with supplement. The September issue includes a poem, On Recollection, from Phillis Wheatley's forthcoming book to be published in London as well as a note by her owner, Wheatley, in the April issues. Much of the notes and Wheatley's article were aimed to convince readers that a slave could in fact be a writer and poet. Phillis Wheatley, "(1753-05 December 1784), poet and cultivator of the epistolary writing style, was born in Gambia, Africa, probably along the fertile low lands of the Gambia River. She was enslaved as a child of seven or eight and sold in Boston to John and Susanna Wheatley on 11 July 1761... Wheatley's final proposal for a volume of poems in September 1784 went virtually unnoticed. .. It is believed she died as a result of an infection from the birth. Wheatley's end, like her beginning in America, was pitiable. Yet this genius of the pen left to the country a legacy of firsts: the first African American to publish a book, the mother of African-American letters, the first woman writer whose publication was urged and nurtured by a community of women, and the first American woman author who tried to earn a living by means of her writing." DNB. "The Dying Negro: A Poetical Epistle from a Black to his intended wife," an abolitionist poem is also reviewed in the October issue Other items include exploration such as: "Epitome of Commodore Byron s voyage round the world", "Epitome of Captain Wallis s voyage round the world", and two long articles on Cook's voyage around the world. And one of the first illustrations of the Kangaroo. Description
N.p., 1870. Carte After the original photograph by William Edward Kilburn (1818–1891), taken circa 1854, with later CDV issue, probably circa 1870s. Albumen print mounted on card; sitter identified in print beneath image. Standard carte-de-visite format (approximately 2½ x 4 inches). Excellent contrast with light surface wear.. Seated three-quarter portrait of Nightingale in dark silk dress with white collar, hands folded over a paper, posed beside an upholstered Victorian chair. The image derives from a sitting arranged in London with William Edward Kilburn, one of Britain’s early professional photographers and a former daguerreotypist who gained fame by exhibiting at the Great Exhibition of 1851. By the early 1850s Kilburn had established a reputation for photographing members of the aristocracy and prominent public figures. The Nightingale sitting happened shortly before her departure for the Crimea in October 1854, at a moment when her name was just entering the public press. The portrait predates her full transformation into the national icon later known as the “Lady with the Lamp.” Unlike later, more romanticized images, Kilburn’s photograph presents a composed, unsentimental likeness more consistent with standard portraiture practices than her later photographs. Following Nightingale’s wartime service at Scutari (1854–1856) and the subsequent surge of public acclaim, Kilburn’s image became the primary photographic source from which engravings, lithographs, and later carte-de-visite reproductions were made.[1] [1] Denis Pellerin, “Florence Nightingale: The Mystery Behind Her Iconic Photographs,” The Classic (November 15, 2020), https://theclassicphotomag.com/florence-nightingale-the-mysteries-behind-her-iconic-photographs/, accessed February 27, 2026.

Description
N.p., 1870. Albumen print, 3 ½ x 2 ¼ inches on larger mount. Excellent.. An uncommon contemporary portrait of Tennie Claflin. This photograph was taken during the brief period that Claflin operated her brokerage firm with her sister, Victoria Woodhull—the two are the first women to open a Wall Street brokerage firm. The sisters opened the firm in the winter of 1870 with the support of Cornelius Vanderbilt, who was drawn in by Claflin’s claims of magnetic healing and Woodhull’s of clairvoyance.[1] The short-lived firm shocked the press and public, but won the support of New-York Tribune editor Whitelaw Reid—and of the women whose financial needs the firm served. Using their profits, the sisters not only bought a lavish apartment but launched their own newspaper, Woodhull & Claflin’s Weekly, which promoted their views on free love, Communism, and women’s rights. A fine example with minimal wear. [1] Edward J. Renehan, Jr., Commodore: The Life of Cornelius Vanderbilt (Basic Books: 2009).

Chicago: Hammersmark Publishing, 1904. FIRST EDITION. Contemporary brown cloth backed brown boards with paper title labels on front cover and spine, top edge gilt; a very good copy. Inscribed in pencil by Masters in 1904 on front paste-down. First edition. Masters' third and one of his most elusive books, a collection of political essays. Articles include discussions of Theodore Roosevelt, John Marshall, Jefferson and Hamilton, implied powers and imperialism, election of federal judges, despotism, and observations on democracy, among others. “In those essays, Masters praises Jefferson as the man "who gave form and purpose to the republic," while Hamilton is condemned as a monarchist whose policies amounted to nothing less than "imperialism." As early as 1904, Masters feared that the republic of Jefferson had decayed into a corrupt Hamiltonian empire.” Masters (1868-1950) was an American attorney, poet, and essayist, most known for his Spoon River Anthology and his biographies of Lincoln and Twain.

Description
Hollywood: Walt Disney Productions / Paramount Pictures, 1939. Very good. Six studio still photographs (one borderless) from "Pinocchio," "Dumbo" and "Gulliver's Travels," 1939 - 1941; 8 x 10; all from The Examiner's Reference Library, with the newspaper's stamp on verso, holograph notes (describing the specific scenes) and/or mimeo snipes pasted on; overall in very good condition - with small creases to corners, one with two small nicks to bottom edge, one with a slight ripple to right margin. Depicting various moments from the original films, the photographs featured Dumbo, Gideon the Cat, Fox, King Little and King Bombo, and Gabby. Although eagerly-anticipated, Pinocchio, based on Carlo Colodi's 1883 novel and released in February of 1940, was not quite successful. To recoup the financial losses of Pinocchio, among other goals, Dumbo was released in October of 1941 to become the most financially-successful Disney film of the 1940s. Losely based on Swift's novel, Gulliver's Travels was directed by Max Fleischer and released right before Christmas of 1939 to become a box-office success and to be nominated for two Academy Awards - Best Music, Original Score and Best Music, Original Song.

But since he got busted for doing graffiti on the school, and spent the summer doing outdoor work to pay for it, he stands out like you wouldn’t believe. His new physique attracts the attention of queen bee Bethany Milbury, who just so happens to be his father’s boss’s daughter, the sister of his biggest enemy—and Tyler’s secret crush. And that sets off a string of events and changes that have Tyler questioning his place in the school, in his family, and in the world. In Twisted, the acclaimed Laurie Halse Anderson tackles a very controversial subject: what it means to be a man today. Fans and new readers alike will be captured by Tyler’s pitch perfect, funny voice, the surprising narrative arc, and the thoughtful moral dilemmas that are at the heart of all of the author’s award-winning, widely read work." - From The Publisher.
