Boston, Massachusetts: J.M. Whittemore & Co, 1861. Very good. Light toning. One small hole to one of the large labels. Adhesive to verso of smaller pieces.. J.M. Whittemore & Co. was a job printer and publisher known for producing handsome and patriotic covers (illustrated envelopes) with traditional American iconography such as the American flag, Columbia, and military symbolism, often printed in red and blue. The present group of ephemera includes two printed labels that would have been affixed to albums, that people would have kept to collect patriotic covers in. each measures 7.75" by 4.75", and has imagery of the flag and Columbia. The other three items here are three proofs/samples of illustrations by Whittemore, the largest measuring approx. 3.5" by 1.5". One shows an eagle atop an American flag, and the other two show a soldier with musket and flag.

When the book was rebound the last ten or so pages of the book were not rebound in the correct order, however, all stories/pages are present. Minor toning and soiling due to age.. A book of fairy tales and fables whose title of Unter'in Marchenbaum, translates to "Under the Fairy Tale Tree". The roughly translated titles of the stories included in the book are: "Spring, the North Wind, Mamsell Pimpernell, the Giant and the Dwarves, Karlchen Nassweis or the Moon Journey Against Will, The Strong Hans, the Birch Mermaid Glamor Ruth, the Child in the Glasshouse, the Mohrenkind, Dom Kinde Who Does Not Want to Sleep, the Fairy Tale of the Long Nose, From the Sugar Hugo, From the Easter-Haas, From the Lion and the Crocodile, Sweet-toothed Cat and the Three Dogs, the Watchful Ravens, Rainbow Bowl, Christmas Fairy Tale, and Sandman." With the exception of the tile page, each page has a hand-colored illustrated by Eugen Klimsch. These illustrations are brightly colored and often depict the humorous portions of the stories. Philadelphia: Griggs & Dickinson, 1832. Good. Philadelphia: Griggs & Dickinson, 1832. Standing Edition, Greatly Improved. 24mo; 413pp. Contemporary brown leather with black title card to spine. Boards rubbed and bumped along edges and corners, with chipping at head of spine and leather worn away and cracking at bottom exposing gatherings. Split starting to front joint, but binding is still holding. Dampstain affecting front endpapers and first gathering, clearing up by the end of the prefaces. Pages foxed and toned throughout, but legible. A number of gatherings cleanly separated but laid in. Contemporary ownership inscription reads "J.B. Vernon's Book bought in the year 1831, price 25." This copy most recently from the personal library of journalist and language writer William Safire, but without his bookplate or inscription.
