Description
London: William Heinemann, 1908 Book. Fine. Hardcover. Signed by Illustrator(s). Deluxe Edition. First deluxe edition. One of 1000 numbered copies signed by Rackham, this being number 340. Quarto. 11¾x9 inches 134pp. 40 full-page mounted color illustrations, each protected with a captioned tissue guard, and 30 black & white drawings. Full gilt-lettered and decorated vellum, top edges gilt, silk ties intact. Minimal foxing throughout, covers are lightly soiled. One of the most sought-after titles illustrated by Rackham, the premier British illustrator of the late 19th - early 20th century. The themes of love, magic, and fairies in the Shakespeare play lend themselves particularly well to Rackham's fanciful, fairytale style. The silk ribbon ties on this volume are still intact, which is quite scarce; most copies are found with the ties missing or hanging by a few threads. [Latimore & Haskell: p.32]. .

Description
Chicago: Black Cat Press, 1937 Book. Very fine. Hardcover. 1st Edition. First edition. One of 250 copies printed and published by the Black Cat Press. 61pp. Chapter notes. Original silver-stamped blue cloth, printed paper label on front cover. A bit of rubbing to spine ends and edges, else a fine copy. Collier (1789-1873) was appointed by President Taylor as Collector of the port of San Francisco just after the Mexican War. He and his party were among the 1849 westward-bound emigrants who came into the gold fields via the southern route - across the Colorado River westward over the Colorado Desert. H.M.T. Powell, in his diary, indicates that Collier followed the mountain route out from the Carrizo Corridor, his trail leading up through a canyon, over the mountains, finally bringing him to San Diego. Well researched with extensive chapter notes. Quite scarce. [Edwards: p. 87; Rader: 1430; Rocq: 9400]..

Description
Oxford at the Theatre in Oxford, 1674. Sm. 4to., black turkey morocco tooled in gilt in an all-over design with drawer-handle tools, curls and flower head tools; decorated with silver paint. The spine is divided into six compartments by five raised bands, which are also tooled in gilt (echoing the covers), with silver paint. The title is gilt lettered in the second compartment from the top. One corner and the very head of the rear joint have been skillfully repaired. Marbled endleaves. The binding is the work of the Queen's Binder A and appears to be a twin of a copy of the same title (but the later, 1675, printing), given to the British Library as part of the Henry David gift [See: No 118]. Hobson and Nixon have had much to say about the forty years following the Restoration of King Charles II to his throne in 1660, which has been called THE GOLDEN AGE OF ENGLISH BOOKBINDING. Nixon points out that there were at least four Queen's binders; viz., A, B, C and D, who all started work in 1670, and all made use of the recently introduced drawer-handle tools and volutes with pointellé outlines rather than floral volutes much used by the other binders of the period. This is a FINE EXAMPLE on a most fitting book. Allestree was a man of extensive learning, of moderate views and a fine preacher. He was generous and charitable, of “a solid and masculine kindness,” and of a temper hot, but completely under control [Encyclopædia Britannica 11th ed.]. A FINE RESTORATION BINDING BY THE QUEEN'S BINDER A

Description
Paris: C. Reinwald, 1878. FIRST EDITION IN FRENCH. Woodcut illustrations and tables in text. Original cloth; an excellent copy, uncut and unopened. First edition in French of the author’s important work on the adaptation of plants. In these investigations, Darwin crosses a “long styled” individual with another long styled flower to produce a comparatively infertile primrose, illustrating a degree of sterility within the limits of a single species comparable to that produced in the crossing of distinct species. Darwin’s work on heterostyled plants bears on one of the most difficult points in the statement of the case for evolution, the sterility of interspecific crosses and of hybrids. Darwin writes that the time involved in this research gave him more pleasure than almost any other. Freeman, 1296.

London, n.d. [ca. 1914]. Original printed self-wrappers. Light soiling. 8pp. Illustrated. 248 x 187 mm. Herman Hollerith, a clerk at the U S Census Bureau, invented the punch-card tabulator, applying for his first patent in 1884; his punched-card system reigned as the primary large-scale data-processing system until the advent of the electronic digital computer. In 1896 Hollerith formed the Tabulating Machine Company; the British branch, known as the British Tabulating Machine Company, was formed in 1907 and remained connected to its American counterpart until 1949. Hollerith remained head of the Tabulating Machine Company until 1911, when he sold it to industrialist Charles R. Flint, who renamed the company C-T-R. In 1915 Thomas J. Watson became president of the new company, and in 1924 Watson renamed the company International Business Machines (IBM). Origins of Cyberspace 374. .
