Description
Venice: [Bonetus Locatellus] for Octavianus Scotus, 1490. Venice: Bonetus Locatellus for Octavianus Scotus, 1490]. After Manilius's Astronomica, Sacrobosco's Sphaera was the first printed book on astronomy (Ferrara: 1472). Small quarto (7 3/4 x 5 7/8 inches; 197 x 150 mm). 48 leaves. Woodcuts and diagrams, seven of which are colored. With the full-page woodcut portraying Urania, Ptolemy, and Astronomia on a throne, printed here for the first time. And a woodcut printer's device printed in red on colophon leaf. Additionally there are numerous engraved initials. This is the second book printed in color, the first being the first edition of this title. Full modern calf. Boards ruled in gilt. Spine stamped and lettered in gilt. Some minor scuffs to boards. Modern marbled endpapers. Previous owner's old ink faded marginalia, on title-page and throughout. Some minor occasional soiling and a few minor marginal wormholes. Overall a very good, crisp copy. Housed in a custom cloth clamshell. Written about 1220, De Sphaera is "a small work based on Ptolemy and his Arabic commentators...antedating the De sphaera of Grosseteste. It was quite generally adopted as the fundamental astronomy text, for often it was so clear that it needed little or no explanation. It was first used at the University of Paris....and from the middle of the thirteenth century it was taught in all the schools of Europe. In the sixteenth century it gained the attention of mathematicians, including Clavius. As late as the seventeenth century it was used as a basic astronomy text" (DSB XII, p. 61). BMC V, p. 438. Goff J-409. HBS 68493. $13,500.

Description
1953. [Natural Disasters][Massachusetts] Worcester tornado photo archive documenting the infrastructure collapse and civilian recovery in Massachusetts, in the wake of the deadly June 9, 1953 Worcester tornado. The disaster shattered houses, commercial property, streets, utilities, and institutional buildings in the city. These images record the aftermath of the storm at street level, where collapsed buildings and families recovering household goods demonstrate the severity of the F4 tornado. The Worcester tornado, which resulted in 94 fatalities, prompted major changes in U.S. weather operations: the national severe storms forecasting unit that developed into today's Storm Prediction Center was reorganized on June 17, 1953, just days after the storm hit, and federal efforts continued to build a broader radar and trained storm spotter network Photo archive of 15 silver gelatin photographs, approximately 3 x 4.5 inches, Worcester, Massachusetts, June 1953. Small vernacular prints with scalloped edges and perforations from prior binding. Also included are disbound front and back Super Pak Snaps wrappers stamped "TORNADO DAMAGE / WORCESTER, MASS. / JUNE 9, 1953." The images show a large building with upper stories torn open and an overturned automobile in the foreground; rows of wood frame houses collapsed into heaps of siding, wall sections, and window frames; a commercial storefront with its facade stripped away and counters and merchandise exposed to the street; and a damaged industrial building with curved roof framing buckled above delivery vehicles, including a truck marked for 7 Up bottling in Worcester. Several photographs show residents standing in debris fields or pulling household goods and furniture out of the wreckage, while other views include snapped poles, stripped trees, vacant lots, and long runs of damaged buildings. The Worcester tornado remains the deadliest tornado disaster in New England history, having left 94 people dead, 10,000 without homes, and millions of dollars in damages. This archive illustrate the urban community response in the aftermath of the storm damage: families salvaging possessions, commercial interiors exposed, transport vehicles halted beside wrecked structures, and residential blocks reduced to open debris fields. Some soiling and marginal perforations from previous binding; images largely unaffected, with light general wear. Overall good condition. The archive offers scene by scene evidence of disaster damage and immediate recovery in one of the most destructive tornados in New England history.

Description
1980. Aramco and Its World: Arabia and the Middle East. Washington, D.C.: Arabian American Oil Company, 1980. First edition, blue cloth issue with folding map. Missing dust jacket.Large quarto. 275 pages. Profusely illustrated with full-color photographs, maps, and diagrams, many double-page and some folding. Bound in publisher's blue cloth with turquoise lettering. Includes large folding color map of The Arabian Peninsula (approx. 24 x 36 in.) inserted at rear. This first edition of Aramco's 1980 definitive corporate and cultural history, Aramco and Its World replaced the long-running Aramco Handbook series. As the Preface recounts, the work "had its origins in the late 1940s when Aramco...was moving through a period of tremendous growth and expansion," beginning as a set of spiral-bound booklets for incoming American employees and evolving into increasingly sophisticated volumes. This edition is described internally as the "fifth edition of a work first published some thirty years ago," the first in its current, lavishly illustrated form intended for both employees and general audiences. Its publication came just months after Saudi Arabia completed full acquisition of Aramco, marking a symbolic transition from an American-run concession to a wholly Saudi-owned energy giant. The volume's imagery offers a panoramic visual narrative of Saudi Arabia's geography, culture, and petroleum industry. Opening spreads such as "Saudi Arabia: The Heartland" feature dramatic desert landscapes-here a dusky sky frames the rock arch of Jebel al-Fil-signaling both the natural grandeur and the remoteness of the company's operating environment. Cultural sections like "Life in the Desert" depict Bedouin traditions with vivid immediacy: a coffee-making ritual by an open fire, a camel-mounted rider in mid-stride, and herders tending goats beside black goat-hair tents. The text observes that Bedouin tents "had to be easy to erect and dismantle, light and portable, easy to maintain and repair, and resistant to wind and rain," underscoring adaptations to a harsh environment. Cartographic and technical plates emphasize Aramco's industrial reach. A three-dimensional shaded relief map of "Oil Fields of the Middle East" marks Aramco's concessions in bright color, while a fold-out bird's-eye rendering of the Arabian Peninsula reveals both geological structure and strategic positioning. Industrial imagery ranges from surveyors taking seismic readings in the Rub' al-Khali to control rooms filled with instrumentation panels, juxtaposing desert isolation with cutting-edge technology. Port and refining infrastructure appear in striking aerial views-tank farms arrayed in geometric precision at Ras Tanura, offshore drilling platforms silhouetted against the sunset, and supertankers moored for loading. Pie charts dated 1978 quantify global oil production, reserves, and consumption, visually situating Saudi Arabia as the dominant petroleum power of the era. The rear pocket's folding map, "The Arabian Peninsula" (drawn by Don Thompson), presents the region in bold topographic color, an oversized corporate gift that reinforces the book's function as a prestige object. The personal inscription on the front free endpaper-"Dear Dick and Susie...I'm on page 117"-further individualizes this copy, hinting at the book's use as a personal and professional keepsake within Aramco's expatriate community. Light sunning and small marks to cloth; map fine.

Berlin: Z. I. Grzhebina, 1923. Very good. First edition; 6 1/2 x 4 1/2; pp. [8], 9-124, [4]; striped, yellow-and-orange paper over boards (also published with the paper in dark- and light-blue); title in brown; rebacked with a thin strip of silk; a bit of rubbing along edges; occasional minor spotting to a few pages; in very good condition. Dubbed "especially Rozanovian" and called: "...perhaps the most salacious literary memoir in Russian...," modernist author Aleksei Remizov's (1877 - 1957) "Kukkha" weaved letters, memories, and imaginary conversations with the author's deceased friend - controversial author and philosopher Vasilii Rozanov (1856 - 1919) - lamenting on the hardships of life in exile. Allegedly, Kukkha was the name Remizov gave Rozanov, when the former elected him an honorary member of the imaginary "Great and Free Monkey Federation." And there is a lot of work - about sixty houses and buildings - all on the boards however. . .the Johnson Research Tower. . .and the Friedman house in New Mexico. . . LOUIS MOUNTBATTEN (1900-1979). Mountbatten was an important British statesman and military officer. He was the last Viceroy of India and an Admiral of the Fleet. He was assassinated by the IRA when they planted a bomb on his boat.TLS. 2pg. 6 x 9. July 10, 1970. Hampshire. A lengthy typed letter signed Mountbatten of Burma on his personal letterhead. He wrote to Craig Schermer of Cleveland: My archivist, Mrs. Travis, has searched our Archives here, and to our surprise and disappointment the only letter we can trace from the Empress Alexandra [the last Czarina] to my mother is one written in 1884, as a schoolgirl, and one or two written to me when I was a young child. These contain nothing of interest. I have looked again at Baroness Buxhoevedens book, The Life and Tragedy of Alexandra Feodorovna, Empress of Russia and note extensive quotations from letters to my mother. Some of our family papers are still in the Hessian Grand Ducal Archives, and the name of the Archivist is Dr. ClemmI suggest you write and ask him. I presume you have read the biography of the Empress Alexandra by E.M. Almedingen, published by Hutchinson of London? The Czarina was Mountbattens aunt and he visited her in Russia when a boy. The letter has a mailing fold. The original envelope had the stamps cut off.
