Description
Antwerp: Michiel Hillen, 1522. AN EARLY EDITION, ONE OF FIVE PRINTED IN 1522 (The book was first printed in 1521, at London. A Rome edition also appeared in 1521.). Hardcover. Fine. A fine copy, bound in 17th c. calf (ca. 1680), either English or Dutch, with some surface wear and a stain and small sympathetic repair to the lower board, corners bumped, lacking label, gilding perished in places. Title and verso of final blank lightly soiled, first few leaves with light marginal finger-soiling, a few marginal blemishes. With an intricate historiated woodcut title border (dated 1520) featuring grotesques, urns, and a triumph with cherubs, putti, and an elephant. Two fine historiated woodcut initials and several other decorative initials. 18th c. English signature on front flyleaf. Printed by the Antwerp bookbinder-printer-bookseller-publisher Michiel Hillen (a. 1476-1558). During Henry VIII’s reign, Hillen printed a number of important books for the English market, both Catholic and Protestant, including William Tyndale’s “practyse of prelates (1530), which criticized Henry VIII’s divorce. Written in 1521 in response to Martin Luther’s “The Babylonian Captivity of the Church” -the reformer’s radical exposition of the Protestant faith and attack on the papacy- Henry VIII’s “Defense of the Seven Sacraments” won for its author the coveted title of “Defensor Fidei” (Defender of the Faith) from Pope Leo X. Coming as it did from such a powerful Christian prince, Luther was forced to respond to Henry’s work, which he did with more than his usual severity, insulting the king and challenging his theological points. In turn, Henry’s most talented theologians, Thomas More and John Fisher, penned defenses of the king’s “Defense” and further challenges to Luther’s religious views, in what was to become one of the most important debates on the substance of Luther’s doctrine in this crucial, early period. Henry VIII’s “Defense of the Seven Sacraments against Martin Luther” was published in the summer of 1521, by which time Luther had already been excommunicated and outlawed, but his creed was spreading fast and had begun to penetrate England: “The body of Henry’s ‘Assertio’ is primarily concerned with a defense of the seven sacraments against Luther’s attack but there are occasional digressions to take up other controversial points in Luther’s theology. Henry began the main body of his work by castigating Luther for having once acknowledged the value of indulgences, which he openly condemned in his ‘95 Theses’. Similarly, he criticized the reformer because of his earlier acknowledgment of a papal authority that he now rejected in favor of a law of his own establishing. “Henry VIII could not conceive of a serpent more venomous than the author of the ‘Babylonian Captivity’. Luther, he said, had put his own sense and meaning into the sacraments to the destruction of ecclesiastical rites and ceremonies. He had despised the holy and ancient interpreters of scripture; he had called Rome Babylon and the authority of the popes tyranny. For Henry, Luther was a detestable trumpeter of pride, calumny and schism…. “Henry was outraged by Luther’s view that marriage, instituted by God, could unite husband and wife without carrying with it a divinely infused grace. Henry countered that marriage must be regarded as something more holy than a mere care for propagating the flesh. The more holy thing, he said, is the grace that God, the Prelate of all sacraments, infuses into married people in a consecrated marriage. Gravely, and no doubt sincerely, this man of many future marriages said, ‘Carnal concupiscence, by the grace of God, is changed into wine of the best taste. Christ says, ‘What God has put together let no man put asunder.’ O admirable word, which none could have spoken but the Word made flesh.’ “The king was bitterest of all in attacking Luther’s views on the sacrament of holy orders. The special order and authority of the priesthood was the very essence of the order and authority so important to the king. In place of the order of this sacrament, Luther is substituting anarchy and gathering into it all the treasuries of his malice. For what else, Henry asked, does Luther aim at by taking away the sacrament of the priestly orders than to render the ministers of the church contemptible, to procure that the sacraments of the church may also be despised and undervalued as being administered by vile and illegitimate ministers, which is the only drift of Luther’s work? To the king of England, Luther represented a menace to stability and authority, a threat to the existing social and political order.”(H. Maynard Smith, “Henry VIII and the Reformation”) From a historical perspective, it is a great irony that the king who would himself be excommunicated and establish himself as the head of a Protestant English church should defend the legitimacy of the papacy and –a greater irony still- the sacramental nature and sanctity of marriage. However, the true power and “historical value” of Henry’s “Defense” is its demonstration of the seriousness of the threat posed by Luther and his ideas to the institutions of power, both temporal (i.e. the kings and potentates of Europe) and spiritual (i.e. the pope and the priesthood who held a tight grip the keys to salvation.) Coming as it did from such a powerful Christian prince, Luther was forced to respond to Henry’s "Assertio", which he did with more than his usual severity, insulting the king and challenging his theological points. In turn, Henry’s most talented theologians, Thomas More and John Fisher, penned defenses of the king’s book and further challenges to Luther’s religious views, in what was to become one of the most important debates on the substance of Luther’s doctrine in this crucial, early period.

Description
Venice: Giovanni Radici, 1737. Hardcover. Fine. Illustrated with twenty-five full-page engravings in the text. With a woodcut Jesuit device on the title page. Inquisitor's approbation on the recto of the final leaf, verso with publisher's advertisement. Bound in contemporary stiff parchment (lightly soiled, corners bumped, small defects at head and tail of spine). A fine copy with scattered marginal soiling and a few small marginal stains. Edges sprinkled red. The "Spiritual Exercises" of Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuit Order, accompanied by a brief guide to meditating upon the 'Exercises'. The principles of this guide are drawn from the Exercises themselves, according to the rules of meditation laid out by Ignatius, which he received from the Holy Spirit when he first began his spiritual journey. This spiritual wisdom, in turn, inspired the Exercises, and it is through the Exercises that this wisdom is shared with those who undertake them. The 25 illustrations - the first series of images conceived specifically to illustrate the "Spiritual Exercises"- are copies of a suite of engravings first published in 1649. The engraving of the Crucifixion is derived ultimately from an image by the Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens, a major light in the Counter-Reformation production of Jesuit imagery. Symbolic Imagery as Spiritual Aid: Like the written guide to meditation, the images in this edition are auxiliary tools to help the exercitant perform the exercises. For example, the fourth engraving, of a hand with the palm facing the reader with the heading "Examen conscientiae" is a mnemonic image of the five fundamental points of the examination of conscience. (Exer. Spir. 43). On the palm of the hand is written a verse from Psalm 118: "Anima mea in manibus meis semper"("My soul is always in my own hands"). On each finger there is a small, numbered scene that describes one phase of the examination. The numbers that accompany each of the smaller images correspond to brief instructions at the foot of the engraving, each of which prompts the exercitant to recall the full instructions found in the text of the Exercises: 1. "Gratias age": a man kneeling praying to the Lord (Give thanks to our Lord for the gifts we receive). 2. "Pete lumen": a man kneeling praying to the Holy Spirit (Seek God's grace so that we may know and make penance for our sins). 3. "Examina": a kneeling man writes in a book while contemplating Christ in Heaven (Take an inventory of the sins we have committed this day, whether by thought, word, or action). 4. "Dole": a man kneels before an altar, his eyes fixed on an image of the Crucifixion (Seek forgiveness for our sins). 5. "Propone": a soldier brandishing his sword against an animal (Determined to improve ourselves, through Divine Grace.) Other engravings are more straight-forward and easily interpreted. For example, the seventh engraving, with the subscription "in fine illorum inferi, tenebrae et poena" (In the end, Hell, darkness, and punishment), is a vivid reminder of the consequences of sin (Exer. Spir. 71). In the foreground is the infernal abyss, where damned souls writhe in flames. On the edge is seated a devil who, with the sound of his flute, attracts a sinner towards himself. The sinner is depicted as a blindfolded man who approaches on all fours with his hands chained, and on whose back is seated a devil. The devil drives the sinner on, whipping him with a scourge. The sinner also carries on his shoulders two baskets full of animals that symbolize the sins he has committed. Two other devils take part in the scene, ready to intervene, one with a scourge and the other with a mirror, in case the sinner wants to look back and think about what he has lost. For more, see Lydia Salviucci Insolera, "Le illustrazioni per gli Esercizi Spirituali intorno al 1600" in Archivum Historicum Societatis Iesu. (Vol. LX, 1991), p. 174 ff. The Spiritual Exercises: "The 'Spiritual Exercises' encapsulated the essence of Ignatius' own spiritual turn-around and presented it in a form meant to guide others to analogous changes of vision and motivation. Ignatius used the 'Exercises' as the primary means of motivating his first disciples and prescribed it as an experience for all who later entered the Society of Jesus. Although at no point intended exclusively for Jesuits, the 'Exercises' remain the document that told Jesuits on the most profound level what they were and what they were supposed to be. Furthermore, the 'Exercises' set the pattern and goals of all the ministries in which the Society engaged, even though it was not always explicitly recognized as doing so. There is no understanding the Jesuits without reference to that book." (John W. O'Malley, "The First Jesuits", p. 4).

Description
[Various locations, including Montana, Wyoming, Missouri, California, 1931. Very good.. [45] leaves, illustrated with 185 original photographs, from 2.75 x 2 inches to 6.5 x 4 inches, the great majority measuring 5.75 x 3.5 inches, and a few postcards, most with manuscript annotations on the borders of the images or on the album pages. Oblong folio. Contemporary textured black cloth, gilt title on front cover, string tied. Moderate rubbing to covers, bottom edge worn, corners creased. Internally clean, photographs in very nice shape. A well-annotated vernacular photograph album chronicling about two decades of the travels and experiences of Ray Royse and his family as they trekked from Illinois to California through the Upper West in the first quarter of the 20th century. The Royse family started in Aledo, Illinois, and numerous photographs feature various family members here. They then traveled through Casper, Wyoming, Great Falls and Butte, Montana, and other locations before settling in Long Beach, where Ray and his brother-in-law worked at the shipyards. The images here document Ray's training at the Sweeney Automobile & Tractor School in Kansas City, driving Harley-Davidson motorcycles, attempting to repair a nearly destroyed family sedan, visiting the Custer Battlefield and the monument to Buffalo Bill Cody among other western sites, scenes in Yellowstone Park, and a family drive up Pike's Peak, among many others. Ray's efforts to move West reflect the expansion and increasingly wide availability of automobiles, and the growing industry in the West following the First World War. The photographs here record numerous locations in the American West to which Ray Royse, along with his family and friends, traveled or worked in in a 1922 Nash, and later a Ford Model T. They traveled across the Continental Divide, Ray worked for a time at the Anaconda Mines near Great Falls and Butte, Montana, and later the Standard Oil Refinery at Shelby, Montana. Many images show a wrecked Ford Model T, with Roy diligently at work trying to repair it, before finally resigning his efforts by attaching a sign reading, "Rest in Pieces" on the radiator. Another picture shows another Ford weighed down with a huge sack of wool in Bear Creek, Wyoming. There are also images emanating from Dublin Gulch near Butte; Livingston, Montana; Wind River Canyon in Thermopolis, Wyoming; Salt Creek, Wyoming; ; and several park scenes in Kansas City. A handful of images feature the Warren family in Butte. Several photographs memorialize the Royse family trip to Yellowstone Park in 1923, with many of the geysers and surrounding landscapes, the Old Faithful Inn in Yellowstone, and more. There are also interesting photos from a Royse family drive to the top of Pike's Peak with views from the peak, with additional shots from the Garden of the Gods, cliff dwellings near Colorado Springs, scenes in New Mexico and Arizona in 1929, dams near Great Falls, the Beaver Dam in Wyoming, a picture of the "Million Dollar Fire" in Casper in 1921, and a beached fifty-five-foot whale in Long Beach, dated December 28, 1929. Altogether, the images clearly illustrate the wandering nature of the Royse family across several states in the American West. Ray Royse (1903-1942) was an automobile mechanic, metal worker, and sheet metal specialist who worked in the Long Beach shipyards from 1929 until 1942, when he was killed in a shipyard accident. He also worked as a coal miner in Wyoming and on the Douglas Sheep Ranch in Wyoming, both of which are chronicled in photographs in the present album. He met and married Sylvia Lambert in 1934 in South Dakota, before returning to California. A wide-ranging and eclectic mixture of original and unique photographs of the West documenting an interesting family who began in Illinois and eventually settled in California.

Description
[Various locations, mostly in Cuba and Florida: March 5 to April 1, 1909. About very good.. [21] leaves, illustrated with 235 photographs, all with typed captions. Oblong folio. Contemporary full dark brown cloth, brad bound. Moderate staining and coiling to covers, some edge wear. Bottom corners of all leaves chipped, not costing content. Occasional minor wear to photos or captions. A well-organized and meticulously-captioned vernacular photograph album with significant content on Florida and Cuba in the first decade of the 20th century. The album is organized chronologically and features a family from Ohio traveling from home by train to Florida and thence to Cuba, then returning home in the spring of 1909. The first seven and the last twenty-five photographs emanate from Ohio (where the journey started), Tennessee, and Georgia, but otherwise the album features Florida and Cuba in over 200 pictures. The scenes in Florida range from Jacksonville to Key West and other points in-between, featuring the state in almost 120 photos, both before and after the traveling party went to Cuba. The images capture portraits of the travelers, numerous homes, hotels, businesses, and other buildings, including an ostrich farm in Jacksonville, numerous scenes in Ocala (including one image featuring "Mary and her old colored Mammy"), various churches and other scenes in Tampa, residences in Key West, beach scenes at Long Key, various hotels and agricultural fields in Miami, and various buildings in Palm Beach, Ormand, and St. Augustine, concluding with a front view of the "Old Slave Market" in the latter city. Most notably, the album includes eighty-six photographs of Cuba, the nexus point for the present trip, where the party arrived on March 20. The Cuba scenes mostly feature Havana, with several views of "Beautiful Residences" and other buildings, plus some street views and other scenes in the city. Other interesting Havana scenes picture the railroad station, "The Bone Yard -- Old destroyed Catacombs," scenes in the Malecon, and more. Some of the street scenes in Havana picture local residents, one of "Children on the street corner" and another showing "Children scrambling for pennies" in the middle of the street. The album also contains views of the wreck of the Maine, Morro Castle, the interior of Fort Cabanas, and more. The travelers managed to wander outside Havana for a day, when they ventured to the countryside and the town of Guines on March 23. While there, the compiler took photographs of countryside outside Guines, a railroad car full of sugar cane, thatched houses, a group photograph of the students at a "Spanish School in Guines," a "Child crying in the street," a group of locals outside a cafe (captioned "Strangers in a strange land...Where we tried to get something to eat"), other street scenes in the town, and the local jail. The last photograph of Cuba here features a "Large Sugar Mill in Providencia." The group then returned through Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee (where they spent a day at Lookout Mountain and Orchard Knob) before their final stop in Dayton, Ohio. A wonderful early-20th century travel album, with significant views in Florida and Cuba.

Fourteen (14) items total. 1). Typed Letter Signed ("Herbert Hoover") [Palo Alto, California] September 15, 1933, to his attorney. Edward D. Lyman at the Los Angeles law firm of Overton, Lyman & Plumb. 4to, 1 1/2 pages, with holograph correction and addition (with a surveyor's map attached, indicating location of the property): "For your confidential information, I and some friends have been purchasing some land in the southern San Joaquin Valley. We would like to extend these holdings if we could get areas with proper soil and water. Either the Los Angeles Athletic Club or the Los Angeles Duck Club own two sections of land southeast of Bakersfield. They use it for duck shooting purposes. this institution has recently been in financial difficulties .it might be willing to sell the land for a reasonable price if it were given a perpetual right to maintain their Duck Club on it. That club.would cause some slight interferences with agricultural operations, but that could be represented in the price. In other words it is not worth as much with the Duck Club on it as it would be with the Duck Club off. I would be glad if you would find out what the lowest price is that they would accept and the terms of payment .I send you a small map with the areas marked." A holograph addition has been added above the closing: "I want my name kept out of it!" 2). Typed Letter Signed ("Herbert Hoover") [Palo Alto, California] September 16, 1933, to his attorney. Edward D. Lyman at the Los Angeles law firm of Overton, Lyman & Plumb. 4to, 1 page: "Since writing you yesterday I find the assessed value of the land mentioned is $58,000 for 1298 acres. I am told that if the Club kept a small acreage and had exclusive shooting right over the balance they would be as well off as if they owned the whole. I am leaving for two weeks to visit the Chicago Fair. would you keep Mr. Sexson, my secretary, advised. He will keep in touch with me." 3). Telegram, on Western Union form, September 19, 1933, from Hoover's secretary, Paul Sexson at Palo Alto, to P.B. Plumb: "Referring to phone conversation matter is entirely confidential.principals name would not be divulged." 4). Typed letter (carbon copy), September 20, 1933, from Eugene Overton, to Herbert Hoover (to Sexson's attention): "I learned that the property that you are interested in belongs to the Los Angeles Athletic Club, and I have just talked with Mr. Frank A. Garbutt, who controls that Club.he is considered one of the most able business men and hardest traders in this City.he asked if our clients would be willing to let the Athletic Club reserve the oil rights.he then stated that he might not be so much interested in reserving the shooting rights as the oil rights." With a P.S.: "Since dictating the above [I learned] that you [said] the urgency in this matter was due to the fact that there was some oil development at or near the land." 5). Telegram, on Western Union form, September 21, 1933, from Paul Sexson, to Eugene Overton: "Please have G[arbutt] quote us two prices one with oil rights and one without." 6). Description
folio, single sheet, measuring 7 ½ by 12 inches, formerly folded, light damp-stain, else in very good, clean condition. Formation of the future Constitutional Union Party- proposed by a close friend of Lincoln's – Southern papers viewed it as a "Black Republican plot", 1858. Rare. While there are undoubtedly copies of this circular to be found, as later distributed, there seems to be none listed under Sargent's name in WorldCat, and it may be that this proof copy is unique. A handsomely printed form intended to be sent to disaffected Southern Democrats by former "know Nothings" who hoped to unite northern Republicans with old Whigs in the South in a new political party before the 1860 election. The letter says nothing directly about the hotly contentious issue of slavery, proposing instead to form the new Party around the "Crittenden amendment", a constitutional compromise proposed by the Senator from Kentucky, guaranteeing the permanent existence of slavery in the slave states, reinstating the Missouri Compromise and extending the compromise line to the west, with slavery prohibited in the northern states but guaranteed in the South. Sargent's statement includes much vague rhetoric about nationalism and the rights of American labor, while denouncing the "corrupt and reckless" Democratic Party then in power and demanding prohibition of "the immigration of foreign paupers and criminals, who are instantly transformed into voters, and by whom our elections are often decided". Southern newspapers obtained a copy of Sargent's letter – and printed it in full – one Georgia paper denouncing this plot by northern "Black Republicans" to "win Southern aid to their effort to defeat the Democratic Party" in the coming presidential election, "by sinking the slavery question … and baiting the American [Know Nothing] Party with the pauper-criminal-immigration sop…", this being "the same old abolition horde marching under a new flag…" In fact, the suspicion had some justification. Nathan Sargent was an ex-Whig journalist and political appointee who had been Sergeant-at-Arms of the House of Representatives when Abraham Lincoln served in Congress in the late 1840s. He had been Register of the U.S. Treasury under the Whig Fillmore, then drifted into the Know Nothing Party in the 1850s, staying aloof at first from the new Republican Party because he believed Fremont, its first standard-bearer, was secretly a Catholic. After sending out this letter, he apparently proposed his plan to Lincoln, who responded to his "old friend" that "your platform proposes to allow the spread, and nationalization of slavery to proceed without let or hindrance… Surely you do not seriously believe the Republicans can come to any such terms." Decides, said Lincoln, the whole idea was a fantasy; the "rotten democracy" (Sargent's words) had to be "beaten" in the North in 1860 and "no human invention can deprive them of the South." When the Constitutional Union Party was formed on the principles set forth in this letter, Sargent himself was not present at the creation, instead showing his true Republican colors. After Lincoln was elected – partly because the new Party divided the vote – the President regretted being unable to give "my old friend" Sargent what he most wanted – appointment as Post Master of Washington (a job that went to an anti-slavery editor), but seeing that this "wounds him, and consequently me, very deeply", had him appointed Commissioner of Customs in the Treasury Department, a sinecure he held throughout the Civil War and into the Reconstruction era until President Grant appointed him a federal judge.

Small separation at head of spine. Very Good. Six editions were published in 1837. This is the first. For an exposition of Wayland's unusually productive life, see DAB. Wayland was president of Brown University for twenty-eight years. His treatise expounds on the economic concepts of wealth, value, cost, labor, money, production, exchange, distribution, and consumption. He was an articulate advocate of free markets, to the annoyance of some of his northern brethren. The book is "a classic that deserves a hearing even though it was written almost two centuries ago... The emphasis in The Elements of Political Economy is always on industry, frugality, thrift, innovation, entrepreneurship, property, competition, the division of labor, labor-saving devices, and capital. And rather than exalting the laborer and scorning the capitalist, the merchant, the retailer, the exchanger (middleman), and the money-lender-- as is usually the case - Wayland earnestly defends them" [Vance, FRANCIS WAYLAND: PREACHER-ECONOMIST. In Mises Daily Articles on line, 4/21/22]. Sabin 102186. AI 48393a [5]. Not in Eberstadt, Decker, Larned.
