Description
[Providence, R.I.: Livermore & Knight, 1886. Portrait frontispiece. [12] ff. Portrait and text printed on rectos only (first and last leaves blank). 1 vols. Square 24mo. Stitched; hard-tack biscuit-shaped covers of pressed cardboard. Covers detached. Very good. Portrait frontispiece. [12] ff. Portrait and text printed on rectos only (first and last leaves blank). 1 vols. Square 24mo. On the occasion of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the battle of Bull Run, veterans of the Civil War honor the memory of the Rhode Island hero, John Stanton Slocum, first colonel of the Second Rhode Island volunteers, who fell in battle on 21 July 1861. The memoir of Slocum is by his friend Gen. Olney Arnold (1822-1900). The covers are in the form of a hard tack biscuit. The Providence division of the Grand Army of the Republic was named the Slocum Post in his honor; a fair and bivouac was organized in late April 1886. The last leaf of the text bears a pencil note "This was earlier Monday read at the dedication of the monument at Swan Point April 26, 1886". A book-object of singular appearance. We know of one other copy, now at the Providence Public Library. Not in any of the usual references
