Description
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1956. First Edition, First Printing. Cloth. Very good/very good. First edition of MacArthur: His Rendezvous with History by Major General Courtney Whitney, signed by Gen. Douglas MacArthur, Jean MacArthur, Courtney Whitney, their son, Arthur MacArthur IV, and nanny, "Ah Cheu.. Octavo, xi, [1], 547pp, xiii. Rust orange cloth, spine in blue, title stamped in gilt on spine and blind stamped on cover. Top edge dyed red. Stated "First Edition" on copyright page. Complete with three maps. Light wear to cloth boards, foxing to endpapers. In the publisher's first state dust jacket, $6.75 retail price on front flap, light sunning to spine, shallow chipping and wear along edges, an overall very good example. A unique collection of signatures including General Douglas MacArthur, Jean MacArthur, Major Gen. Courtney Whitney, Arthur MacArthur IV (MacArthur's son), and their beloved Chinese nanny, Loh Chui ("Ah Cheu"). Ah Cheu, whose legal name was Loh Chui, was the Cantonese nanny who helped raise Arthur MacArthur IV (MacArthur's only child), and accompanied them during the March 1942 escape from Corregidor-a decision he later defended on the grounds that she had been with his son "since Arthur's birth" and would likely have been killed if left behind. She is also dramatized on screen as "Ah Cheu" in the 1977 film MacArthur.

Description
Washington, D.C.: March 10, 1908. Very good.. [2]pp. on a single folded sheet, docketed in print on verso of second leaf. With House of Representatives stamp dated March 11, 1908, indicating referral to the Committee on Public Lands. Old folds, minor wear. A slip bill printing of a proposed 1908 "Act Authorizing Settlers on Crow Reservation Lands in Montana to Mortgage Same for the Construction of Irrigation Systems Prior to Final Proof." This act authorized that settlers who had obtained "portions of the ceded lands of the Crow Indian Reservation in the State of Montana...shall be entitled to patent for the land so entered upon the payment to the local land officers of the usual and customary fees and the balance remaining unpaid on the purchase price of said lands." Further, "any such entryman" may make agreements with and mortgage land to "with any irrigating company or other person or corporation for the purpose of borrowing money for the payment of the purchase price of said lands and all fees due the Government and for the cost of an irrigating system for said lands or other improvements necessary for the use of said lands for farming purposes, or for all of these purposes." The bill is signed in ink at the conclusion of the text by Senate Secretary Charles Bennett. The act was referred to the Committee on Public Lands on March 11, 1908. In essence, the present act allowed American settlers who had secured (or some might say stolen) land on the Crow Reservation in Montana (which had begun in the 1890s) to mortgage those lands to construct irrigation systems on those lands.

Description
Columbus, Ohio, 1890. 7 x 11 inches. Folded with tears at folds, piece missing from center bottom, not intersecting with text. Overall good.. A handbill with a poem written by J.B. O’Reilly celebrating the victory of striking streetcar workers in Columbus, Ohio in 1890. On June 3, workers formed a union and commenced a strike, demanding shorter hours and higher wages. They successfully negotiated for both of these demands, bringing their workdays down from sixteen hours to a mere twelve.[1] O’Reilly writes: “While God in His nature / Has designed it for us all, / That the birds in the bushes / Can be fed one and all; / But man as a demon / Should crumble to dust, / Who’s a defrauder of wages / Or deprive the poor of a crust.” We find no other copies in OCLC. Of interest to scholars of labor history, especially the role of art therein.
