Description
1708. BOUTET, Claude. Traite De Mignature pour apprendre aisement a peindre sans maitre. Avec le secret de faire les plus belles couleurs, l'or bruni & l'or en coquille. Frontispiece, [14], 269, [19] pp. Illustrated with 2 leaves of plates. 8vo, 158 x 90 mm, bound in contemporary boards. The Hague: Louis and Henry van Dole, 1708. Originally published in Paris 1674, this is one of many later editions, but by far the most important since it contains the first appearance of a colour wheel, as usual uncoloured in this copy. The text stresses pigment and colour recipes (most of the book is devoted to them) but there are also sections on drawing, use of the compass, preparation of vellum, etc. Professor Herbert comments on this book, stating "It consists largely of recipes for pigment mixtures and, typically of seventeenth century manuals, these are subordinated to the images the painter creates. One finds advice on pigments for tan architecture, red drapery, blue skies, rather than on the colors themselves." This edition is rare with OCLC listing only 5 copies in America. Hinges worn, nevertheless a fine copy. Massing 16, listing 26 editions or printings and she states that the "above list is undoubtedly incomplete." Birren Catalogue 92. Kuehni and Schwartz pp. 56-57.

Description
Philadelphia: W. B. Saunders Co., 1904-1909. First and second editions. 1904-1909 COMPLETE SET OF ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF LANDMARK GERMAN MEDICAL ENCYCLOPEDIA EDITED BY NOTABLE AMERICAN PHYSICIANS, INCLUDING OSLER. Twelve heavy hardcover volumes, 9 1/2 inches tall, 1 1/2 - 2 1/2 inches thick, 646 - 1059 pages (total nearly 10,000 pages, illustrated with hundreds of figures and dozens of plates. Bindings strong, with scattered soiling/spotting of covers, corner and edgewear, browning to endpapers, no markings in text, no library markings except for Vol. XII with small bookplate of El Paso County Medical Society Library (no other library marks), old waterstain to corner of pages of Vol. IV (not affecting text). Vol. XII is first edition, first printing; Vol. VII is second edition, first printing; remaining volumes are first edition, later printings. An excellent scarce complete set of an important compendium of early 20th century center of European medical science and education edited for American physicians before the rise of subspecialties. CARL WILHELM HARMANN NOTHNAGEL (1841 – 1905) studied under Rudolf Virchow (1821–1902) at the University of Berlin. From 1882 until his death in 1905, he was a professor at the university clinic in Vienna. In 1876 he described the irregular pulse associated with atrial fibrillation. At the time he referred to this finding as "delirium cordis". In collaboration with other physicians, Nothnagel published "Specielle Pathologie und Therapie", a comprehensive 24-volume handbook of medicine. Prior editions of this work were issued by Rudolf Virchow (from 1854 to 1876) and Hugo Wilhelm von Ziemssen (from 1875 to 1885) as "Handbuch der speciellen Pathologie und Therapie". FROM REVIEW IN JAMA, January 1903, "This, the fourth, volume of the American edition of Nothnagel's Practice keeps up the reputation which the previous volumes of this excellent work have made. It contains exhaustive monographs on the bronchi and emphysema and atelectasis by Hoffmann of Leipsig; in inflammation of the lungs by Aufrecht of Magdeburg-Altstadt; and on diseases of the pleura by Rosenbach of Breslau. It is edited by Dr. John H. Musser of Philadelphia. These monographs in the original hold an enviable place in German medical literature, each one being exhaustive, complete and authoritative and written by men specially fitted for the work. But the American edition is not only a reproduction in English, it is all of this and more, for the American editor has added much of value not included in the original and he has brought every part thoroughly up to date." FROM REVIEW IN BOSTON MEDICAL AND SURGICAL JOURNAL (NOW NEW ENGLAND JOURNAL OF MEDICINE), October 1905, "These volumes are already so well known to students of the various subjects discussed in the German edition that it is not necessary to enter into further details regarding their merits. The system as a whole stands pre-eminently as the best encyclopedic treatise on medicine now extant. The fact that each volume, these as well as others, has been written by a recognized authority on the subject treated, is a commendation and an assurance of excellence which requires no further statement from us. The difficult work of editing has been admirably done by Dr. Stengel and his co-editors. Were it not for the co-operation of the original German contributors to the system this work would have been practically impossible."

London: George Allen & Unwin, Ltd., 1976. First edition. SIGNED PRESENTATION COPY OF ESSAYS ON SCIENCE, SOCIETY, AND CHINA BY BRILLIANT BIOLOGIST, SINOLOGIST, AND GLOBALIST. 13.5x22 cm hardcover, red cloth binding, top edge stained red, inscribed and signed on front free endpaper, "for Edmund Cain/ with best wishes/ New Year 84/ Joseph Needham," 320 pp. Near fine in near-fine price clipped dust jacket in protective mylar sleeve. FROM THE JACKET FLAP: "This book presents an examination of the relationships between science, religion and politics, and of the nature of applied science in capitalist societies. It speaks also of the potential contribution of Asian thought and culture in tackling the problems of all societies based on advanced technology." The last essay, written in 1974, is titled, "An Eastern Perspective on Western Anti-Science." NOEL JOSEPH TERENCE MONTGOMERY NEEDHAM (1900 - 1995) was a British scientist, historian and sinologist known for his groundbreaking research in biochemistry and embryology, and his herculean multivolume history of Chinese science and technology. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1941, and as a fellow of the British Academy in 1971. In 1992, the Queen conferred on him the Companionship of Honour and the Royal Society noted he was the only living person to hold these three titles. Although his career as biochemist and an academic was well established, his career developed in unanticipated directions during and after World War II. Three Chinese scientists came to work with Needham in 1937 and taught Needham Chinese, igniting his interest in China's ancient technological and scientific past. Under the Royal Society's direction, Needham was the director of the Sino-British Science Co-operation Office in Chongqing from 1942 to 1946. Everywhere he went he purchased and was given old historical and scientific books which he shipped back to England through diplomatic channels and were to form the foundation of his later research. On his return to the west, he was asked by Julian Huxley to become the first head of the Natural Sciences Section of UNESCO in Paris. It was Needham who insisted that science should be included in the organization's mandate at an earlier planning meeting. PROVENANCE: EDMUND J. CAIN was the Vice President (retired, 2018) of Grant Programs at the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation where he oversaw all domestic and international grant programming. Prior to joining the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, he was Director of The Carter Center's Global Development Initiative. Beginning in 1972, he also had a long career with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), with career assignments covering Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, Myanmar, Afghanistan, Turkey, and Egypt. In 1996, he was instrumental in creating the United Nations' emergency response division and became its first director.
