Description
1908. CRAIG, Edward Gordon. The Mask. A Monthly Journal of the Art of the Theatre. A complete set of eighty-seven issues (bound in seventy-one parts) in sixteen volumes (fifteen volumes of magazines, and an additional volume of covers and inserts from 1911-1915). Volumes I to III have title pages and index pages dated 1919, as issued. The other volumes have undated title pages and indices, as issued. Three 4to volumes, 323 x 218 mm., and thirteen 8vo volumes 225 x 158 mm., bound in publisher's half vellum over plain boards, with manuscript titles in black ink on spines, with wrappers, except for two, preserved. Florence [Arena Goldoni]: "The Mask" Offices, [1908-1929]. The Mask, first published monthly, then quarterly, is perhaps one of the finest examples of modernist artwork and thinking of the time, as related to theatre. Edited by Edward Gordon Craig (who also frequently contributed), The Mask was published for twenty years, and was a major focus of Craig's life during that time. "The format of The Mask was governed by the size of the paper, which was hand-made, cheap and came from near-by Fabriano. The typography was dependent on what founts of type the printers had to hand. The firm of Morandi was able to produce a small quantity of Elzivere, which pleased him immensely, so experimental pages were put in hand. The layout was based on an early copy of Vitruvius that he had picked up for a few lire." [Gordon Craig: The Story of His Life, p. 231.] Edward Gordon Craig (1872-1966) was one of the most influential theatre figures of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He came up with the concept of theatrical lighting, in which the stage was lit from above by specially designed lights, instead of using footlights. He used shape, color and light to lend depth to his productions, and was a proponent of using masked actors and puppets to evoke emotional reactions in the audience (he apparently disdained actors, even though we was the son of the famous actress, Ellen Terry). Many of Craig's theories and designs are still studied today. PROVENANCE: From the library of Dr. Rudolf Gebauer, with his bookplates.

Description
1961. Signed. (SENDAK, Maurice) UDRY, Janice May. The Moon Jumpers. New York: Harper & Row, (1959, i.e. circa 1965). Slim quarto, original half maroon cloth, original dust jacket. $1600.Later edition of a “child’s exhilaration and enchantment with the loveliness of summer nights,” inscribed by Sendak to a close friend and neighbor: ""For Elizabeth—with pleasure. Maurice Sendak June '76,"" and with an original drawing of one of the moon jumpers.""'The warm night-wind tosses our hair. The wind chimes stir. And we all dance, barefooted. Over and over the grass. We climb the tree, just to be in a tree at night.' Here is a child's exhilaration and enchantment with the loveliness of summer nights, with the magic of moonlight."" ""No one has ever touched the moon"" Udry tells us and silently encourages us to give it a try. ""For the Moon Jumpers, Maurice Sendak has painted some of his most glorious pictures, catching the moon's illumination of the grass, the house, and the dancing children."" The first edition of The Moon Jumpers appeared in 1959 under the Harper & Brothers imprint. In 1960, Harper & Brothers merged with Row-Peterson. Not long afterward, Harper & Row reissued a number of Sendak books, including this one. See Hanrahan A36. The former owner of this inscribed book was Maurice Sendak's neighbor, Andrew, from Ridgefield, Connecticut. Sendak bought a home and studio in Ridgefield in 1972 with his longtime partner, Eugene Glynn, and lived there until his death. Andrew first encountered Sendak in 1975 during one of his daily dog walks. (Sendak owned many dogs throughout his life, and they often starred in his books.) Andrew was immediately taken with Sendak, who reminded him of his recently deceased father. One day, Andrew called Sendak at home and asked if he could join him on his walks. Andrew and Sendak thus embarked on a 37-year friendship that also included the Andrew's mother, Betty, as well as Andrew's brother. Sendak went on long walks and hikes with Andrew and his family regularly, discussing general life events, opera, and books. He also invited them into his studio to show off works in progress. Andrew's mother, Betty, was an avid reader and collector and she and Sendak would talk late into the night about books. Sendak offered Betty advice about how to find and authenticate rare children's books, which she used to build her collection. Additionally, he frequently bartered for autographs (i.e. a cake for an inscribed drawing). In inscriptions, Betty is often referred to as ""Elizabeth""; Sendak felt that her name was ""common"" and didn't suit her. The many inscribed drawings, along with first editions, signed books, limited edition books, and other valuable items grew into one of the country's premier Sendak collections.Book near-fine, with a few spots of foxing to endpapers. Price-clipped dust jacket extremely good, with slight stain to rear flap, stray mark to rear panel, and light wear mainly to spine ends.

Description
Collection of 28 diaries totaling 8,106 manuscript pages, with 1 visitor's book, totaling 119 manuscript pages (There are also 49 invitations, with envelopes). The collection includes diaries for following years: 1881, 1883-1884, 1886, 1889-1902, 1904, 1908-1909, 1912, 1914, 1919, 1921, 1927 and 1929. There is also a five year diary for 1907-1911 for his wife Edith Bouve Tenney. Of the diaries, nineteen are one day per page diaries, six are two days per page diaries, and two are three days per page diaries, with the remaining diary, Mrs. Tenney's five year diary, which has one page containing one day for each five years The diaries are written in ink, in a legible hand. The five year diary measures approximately 3" x 6", the rest of the diaries are small pocket diaries, measuring approximately 2" x 3". Almost every page has been written in, except for some days in 1908-1909 and Oct-Dec 1929. The entries are generally short, between one to three sentences per day. Half of the diaries have memoranda, notes, addresses, or cash accounts entries filled in at rear. The diaries record Tenney's everyday activities, both social and business, such as annual company meetings he attended, or company directors meetings, or where he went in relation to work, who he met with, etc. There are also over the years records of various vacations, places he toured, etc. Biography of Frank Tenney Frank Tenney was an assistant superintendent of the Pennsylvania Steel Company. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1861, the son of Benjamin F. Tenney and Mary (Viles) Tenney. B. F. Tenney was born in Sutton, Worcester County, Massachusetts, in 1813, and was for many years a merchant in Boston, but subsequently became a member of the Boston Stock Exchange with which he was connected for many years. B. F. Tenney was married in January, 1861, to Mary Bowman Viles, daughter of John and Sally (Dudley) Viles, of Lexington, Massachusetts. Together they had at least three children: Frank Tenney (our diary writer); Maud Tenney, wife of F. F. Sherburn, and Arthur Tenney, who died in 1866. Frank Tenney was educated in the public schools of Boston, finishing his course in the English high school in 1879. He then took a four years' course in metallurgical and mining engineering in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, receiving his B.S. in 1883. One diary in this collection was kept during the year he graduated from M.I.T., another kept in his sophomore year (1881). These two diaries while in college have longer entries then the others. Shortly after graduating from M.I.T., Tenney moved to Steelton, Pennsylvania and was appointed assistant superintendent of the blast furnaces and served in this position until the fall of 1885 when he was transferred to Ashland, Baltimore County, Maryland, to take charge of some blast furnaces which the Pennsylvania Steel Company had leased. In 1886 he returned to Steelton and was made purchasing agent of the Pennsylvania Steel Company, which position he held until 1890. From this year until 1893 Mr. Tenney was an assistant to the general manager, where he was eventually promoted assistant superintendent, which position he held for a number of years. Mr. Tenney was married at Hull, Massachusetts, June 4, 1889, to Miss Edith C. Bouve, the daughter of George F. and A. F. (Cutler) Bouve, of Boston. Together Tenney and his wife had at least three children: John B. Tenney, born June 26, 1890; Margaret Tenney, born April 1, 1892, and Katharine Tenney, born October 5, 1894. His son John B. Tenney was struck by several steel beams in 1917 while working at a steel plant and died. Mr. Tenney's politics were Republican. He was a member of the school board of Steelton. The Pennsylvania Steel Company of New Jersey had offices at the Girard Building in Philadelphia. It was incorporated in 1901 and owned practically all the stock of the Pennsylvania Steel Company, with works at Steelton, Harrisburg, and Lebanon, Pennsylvania, and all the stock of the Maryland Steel Company, with works at Sparrows Point, Maryland. It also owned all the stock of the Spanish-American Iron Company, which operated iron-ore mines in Cuba. In addition, the company owned the entire capital stock of the Baltimore and Sparrows Point Railroad Company and the Penn-Mary Coal Company, which owned 16,000 acres of coal land in Indiana and Cambria Counties, PA. It also owned a majority of stock of the Possum Glory Coal and Coke Company, which operated mines in Indiana County, Pennsylvania. Practically all of the stock of the Pennsylvania Steel Company was owned by the Pennsylvania Steel Company of New Jersey. The two companies had offices in the Girard Building in Philadelphia and the officers of the two companies were almost identical, with Frank Tenney holding the same positions with each company, that being Secretary and Assistant to the President, Edgar C. Felton. The Pennsylvania Steel Company owned seven blast furnaces and leased one other. They also owned several rolling mills and steel works as well, amongst other things and plants and companies such as a bridge building and frog, switch and signal works, foundries, mines, railroads, quarries, coke ovens, etc. Tenney also acted in the same capacity for the Maryland Steel Company, which was owned by the Pennsylvania Steel Company of New Jersey. Bethlehem Steel eventually took over these companies.

No binding. Very Good. Fine Art Print Shirley Jackson (source) Vintage original 22 x 14"" (56 x 36 cm.) theatre window card poster, USA. Washington, D.C.: David Merrick, Sept. 28-Oct. 15, [1966]. Minor wear at extreme blank edges, NEAR FINE. Poster for a month-long tryout for this play by Hugh Wheeler, adapted from one of Shirley Jackson's most famous (and harrowing) works of fiction, with its overriding theme the persecution of people who exhibit ""otherness"". The play, despite having the great director Garson Kanin at its helm, was undoubtedly very strong stuff for the Broadway audience of its time, and it only lasted for a week there.
