Description: France: np, 1475. 1st Edition. No Binding. Very Good. ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT LEAF FROM A LATE 15TH CENTURY FRENCH BOOK OF HOURS FEATURING A POIGNANT MINIATURE DEPICTING THE CRUCIFIXION. The miniature offered here [recto] captures the Crucifixion with notable emotional depth. Christ is shown on the Cross, flanked by the Virgin Mary in deep blue robes, her hands crossed in grief, and St. John the Evangelist who supports her. To the right stands a Roman soldier, possibly Longinus, rendered in vivid red. Behind Longinus stands a phalanx of soldiers in gray. Particularly striking is the artist’s rendering of Christ’s face, which powerfully conveys his pain and exhaustion. The delicate lines and shadows around the eyes and mouth give the figure a haunting realism, demonstrating the illuminator’s careful attention to the humanity of Christ’s suffering. The emotional intensity heightens the devotional function of the leaf, inviting the viewer into a moment of profound empathy and reverence. Surrounding the large miniature are margins richly embellished with sprays of acanthus leaves, red and blue flowers, and a finely detailed bird perched among the vines. In the right margin is a figure with a ladder. The text opens with a 4 line initial D, elegantly drawn in pink surrounding a delicate pink flower. Verso contains 15 lines of text with two 2-line initials decorated with embedded figures and a border of flowers and acanthus leaves. Numerous line fillers and illuminated initials decorate the text. The text is from the opening lines of Matins from the Hours of the Cross. The Latin text below begins Matins: Domine labia mea aperies. Et os meum annunciabit laudem tuam. Deus in adiutorium meum intende. Domine ad adiuvandum me festina. Gloria Patri et Filio et Spiritui sancto. Sicut erat in principio et nunc et semper et in saecula saeculorum, Amen. Allelujah. English translation: Thou O Lord wilt open my lips. And my mouth shall declare thy praise. Incline unto my aid O God. O Lord make haste to help me. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost. Even as it was in the beginning and now and ever and world without end, Amen Alleluia. Montanaro, p. 19, records the English edition, "Artistic Pussy and her Studio", ascribing a date of "189-?" .

Original plain wrappers, front wrapper lacking, rear wrapper and one blueprint detached. Minor edge wear, some chipping and closed edge tears to outer leaves. An informative and likely unique report compiled by C.E. Carter, an engineer with the Twin Falls North Side Land & Water Company. The body of the report consists of seven pages of text and ten folding blueprints containing sketch plans and tables of data pertaining to the tests and discharge of three separate depth tests for measuring suppressed weirs (used to divert water flow within rivers). The sixteen photographs at the rear of the work show the dam in which the testing took place, the regulating weir, in-process testing, areas of leakage, the five-foot weir running at full capacity, and other aspects of the tests. OCLC records a handful of entries for works relating to the Twin Falls North Side Land & Water Company, but not the present report; considering it was compiled with text, blueprint plans and tables, and original photographs, it is likely unique or at least the only surviving example of the report.

Little device and "First Edition" on the copyright page). This was the second volume in Norris's planned trilogy on human suffering and sacrifice, "The Epic of the Wheat." THE OCTOPUS (1901) had described the struggle between wheat farmers and the railroad interests in California, and THE PIT then follows the same wheat through the manipulation of the markets in Chicago. The third volume, which would have been titled THE WOLF, was going to follow the wheat to its destination, relieving a famine in Europe; however, Norris died in 1902 (after an appendix operation, at age 32), so the third volume was never written. This is one of the "Special Presentation Edition" copies, bound in grey boards with printed spine label (rather than the trade copy's red cloth decorated in gilt). These copies include a frontispiece portrait, and also a pre-printed "presentation" passage on the front free endpaper -- this copy filled in with the name "Mr. William Holdredge". (We cannot identify this recipient, though there was a New York publisher by that name about fifty years earlier.) This is a clean, close-to-fine copy (top of spine bumped). It is unknown how many "presentation" copies were so bound, but every copy we've seen has had a recipient's name written in, so it presumably was somewhat limited. An unrecorded composition by a woman who travelled through the midwest claiming to be a descendant of Cleopatra using the name Princess Dalla Pattra. The details of the princess are murky, as she disappears from newspaper records after 1930, when she admitted in court to using a manager to stage a publicity stunt in St. Louis.[1] In her hearing, she also admitted that she had been arrested for embezzlement in San Francisco in 1920. Two years later, rather inexplicably, this songsheet was published in collaboration with a Max Lander, who according to patent records was English. The introduction to the song reads: “Hear the desert winds shriek and the tom-toms in the distance thrilling with the weird undertone of the desert night then the calm as the Royal Egyptian Maiden sings her love song to her desert prince.” We find no record of the composition in OCLC or anywhere else, or of the princess in newspapers after her 1930 court appearance, with the only findable record of her continued impersonation a patent registered in 1931[2] and this song sheet. It is clear that the company is marketing its products to housewives and families, as it contains sentimental and feel-good stories of afflicted children, mothers, and a girl in her teens being cured. A nice example of the kind of advertising ephemera one might pick up from the pharmacy or in the mail at this time. Single vol.
