Description
1802. First Edition. SAUER, Martin. An Account of a Geographical and Astronomical Expedition to the Northern Parts of Russia… Performed, By Command of Her Imperial Majesty Catherine the Second, Empress of all the Russias, By Commodore Joseph Billings… The Whole Narrated from the Original Papers by Martin Sauer. London: T. Cadell and W. Davies (A. Strahan), 1802. Quarto, contemporary mottled calf boards rebacked retaining original marbled endpapers, raised bands. $4000.First edition of this important Russian survey of the extreme northeastern parts of Asia and the coast of Siberia, with large folding chart and 14 full-page copper-engraved plates by William Alexander of views, elevations, portraits of natives, their dress and implements, as well as a comparative glossary of indigenous languages. After serving as an able-bodied seaman aboard the Discovery, one of the two ships commanded by Captain Cook on his fatal last voyage, Joseph Billings joined the Russian navy, where his reputation as ""companion"" to Cook led to his appointment as leader of this expedition. The purpose of the voyage was to determine ""the exact latitude and longitude of the mouth of the river Kovima, and the situation of the great promontory of the Tchukchees as far as the East Cape; the forming of an exact chart of the islands in the Eastern Ocean extending to the coast of America; and, in short, the bringing to perfection the knowledge of the seas lying between the continent of Siberia and the opposite coast of America."" To this end, Billings visited Kodiak, Montague Island, and Prince William Sound. ""In the course of nine years [the expedition] made many large additions to our knowledge of the geography of those inclement regions"" (DNB). In his detailed account of the expedition, Martin Sauer declares ""that the native inhabitants [of Alaska], with their Stone Age culture, were far superior to the toadies who made up the court circles of St. Petersburg and had no culture at all"" (Howgego, 119). The wonderful folding ""Chart of the Strait between Asia & America"" was engraved by Neele after Aaron Arrowsmith, whose cartography was based on ""astronomical observations made in the icy sea."" Cox I, 353. Hill 1528. Howgego B96. Sabin 77152. Howes S117. Streeter 3499. Engraved armorial bookplate.Expert paper repair to inner margins of pages 157-164. Text clean and bright, folding map in excellent condition with minimal foxing. A handsome copy.

1984. Signed. SENDAK, Maurice. Poster signed [""Glyndebourne Touring Opera""]. No place: J.&P. Atchison, 1984. Large color poster, measuring 20 by 30 inches, closely framed. $2800.Large colorful poster for the Glyndebourne Touring Opera's 1984 productions in Norwich of Where The Wild Things Are, Higglety Pigglety Pop!, Le Nozze di Figaro and Cosi Fan Tutte, inscribed by Maurice Sendak to a close friend and neighbor, ""For Elizabeth—For Christmas! Maurice Sendak, Dec. 86.""The poster features five Wild Things gathered about an outdoor stage with a performance occurring. See Hanrahan C22. The former owner of this inscribed poster was Maurice Sendak's neighbor, Andrew, from Ridgefield, Connecticut. Sendak bought a home and studio in Ridgefield in 1972 with his longtime partner, Eugene Glynn, and lived there until his death. Andrew first encountered Sendak in 1975 during one of his daily dog walks. (Sendak owned many dogs throughout his life, and they often starred in his books.) Andrew was immediately taken with Sendak, who reminded him of his recently deceased father. One day, Andrew called Sendak at home and asked if he could join him on his walks. Andrew and Sendak thus embarked on a 37-year friendship that also included the Andrew's mother, Betty, as well as Andrew's brother. Sendak went on long walks and hikes with Andrew and his family regularly, discussing general life events, opera, and books. He also invited them into his studio to show off works in progress. Andrew's mother, Betty, was an avid reader and collector and she and Sendak would talk late into the night about books. Sendak offered Betty advice about how to find and authenticate rare children's books, which she used to build her collection. Additionally, he frequently bartered for autographs (i.e. a cake for an inscribed drawing featuring the cake). Sendak often referred to Betty as ""Elizabeth"" in inscriptions as he felt that ""Betty"" was too common a name. The many inscribed drawings, along with first editions, signed books, and other valuable items grew into one of the country's premier Sendak collections.Fine condition.

Description
"The States are emphatically the constituents of this Government...." JOHN TYLER. Broadside. State of the Union Message. National Intelligencer—Extra, June 1, 1841. Washington, DC: Gales and Seaton. 1 p., 18 x 23 in.William Henry Harrison took office in 1841 while the nation was still suffering from a depression sparked by the Panic of 1837, causing many banks to fail and unemployment to reach then-record levels. Though Harrison took ill almost immediately after giving his lengthy March 4 inaugural address, on March 17 he summoned Congress into a special session that would convene on May 31, 1841. On April 4, Harrison became the first President to die in office. John Tyler delivered his own inaugural address on April 9, but opponents in Congress, including John Quincy Adams, refused to accept Tyler's claim to be president and considered him instead the "acting president," arguing that he had to follow Harrison's policies. When Congress convenes, it appoints a joint committee "to wait on the President" and signal their readiness to receive any communications. Opponents of Tyler used the occasion to attempt to strike the word "President" and insert "Vice-President, now exercising the office of the President." Both houses rejected the change, however, effectively settling the issue. (The Twenty-fifth Amendment to the Constitution, adopted in 1967, finally made it explicit.) Tyler responded with this message to Congress the next day, June 1, 1841. After paying homage to Harrison, he updates Congress briefly on foreign relations before turning to the economy, money supply, and government finance. Tyler proposed a slightly higher tariff, a new bankruptcy law, and an emergency measure to distribute to the states revenue from federal sales of public lands. As Tyler makes clear in this address, he was committed to jealously guarding states' rights against any intrusion by the federal government. He soon parted ways with the majority of Whigs, and twice vetoed Senator Henry Clay's national banking act. In September 1841, all of Tyler's cabinet except Secretary of State Daniel Webster resigned, thinking that would force Tyler out of office. Tyler appointed a new cabinet of Whigs and Democrats opposed to Clay. Excerpts: "You have been assembled in your respective halls of legislation under a proclamation bearing the signature of the illustrious citizen who was so lately called by the direct suffrages of the people to the discharge of the important functions of their chief executive office. Upon the expiration of a single month from the day of his installation he has paid the great debt of nature… By the provisions of the fundamental law, the powers and duties of the high station to which he was elected have devolved upon me… "My first wish under such circumstances would necessarily have been to have called to my aid in the administration of public affairs the combined wisdom of the two Houses of Congress, in order to take their counsel and advice as to the best mode of extricating the Government and the country from the embarrassments weighing heavily on both." "I am happy to say that I see nothing to destroy the hope of being able to preserve peace." "We hold out to the people of other countries an invitation to come and settle among us as members of our rapidly growing family, and for the blessings which we offer them we require of them to look upon our country as their country and to unite with us in the great task of preserving our institutions and thereby perpetuating our liberties." "If paper [money] be used as the chief medium of circulation, and the power be vested in the Government of issuing it at pleasure, either in the form of Treasury drafts or any other, or if banks be used as the public depositories, with liberty to regard all surpluses from day to day as so much added to their active capital, prices are exposed to constant fluctuations and industry to severe suffering.... Stocks of all sorts rapidly decline, individuals are ruined, and States embarrassed even in their efforts to meet with punctuality the interest on their debts. Such, unhappily, is the condition of things now existing in the United States." "If, then, any fiscal agent … shall be placed, without due restrictions, either in the hands of the administrators of the Government or those of private individuals, the temptation to abuse will prove to be resistless.... Aided by the experience of the past, it will be the pleasure of Congress so to guard and fortify the public interests in the creation of any new agent as to place them, so far as human wisdom can accomplish it, on a footing of perfect security." "in the short period of eight years the popular voice may be regarded as having successively condemned each of the three schemes of finance to which I have adverted…. The late contest, which terminated in the election of General Harrison to the Presidency, was decided on principles well known and openly declared, and while the subtreasury received in the result the most decided condemnation, yet no other scheme of finance seemed to have been concurred in." "In reflecting on the proper means of defending the country we cannot shut our eyes to the consequences which the introduction and use of the power of steam upon the ocean are likely to produce in wars between maritime states." "Separated as we are from the countries of the Old World, and in much unaffected by their policy, we are happily relieved from the necessity of maintaining large standing armies in times of peace." "Unless persons every way trustworthy are employed in the public service, corruption and irregularity will inevitably follow." "I shall also at the proper season invite your attention to the statutory enactments for the suppression of the slave trade, which may require to be rendered more efficient in their provisions. There is reason to believe that the traffic is on the increase.... The highest considerations of public honor as well as the strongest promptings of humanity, require a resort to the most vigorous efforts to suppress the trade." Tyler later sent a regular annual message to Congress (State of the Union address) on December 7, 1841, when it reconvened for its regular session. John Tyler (1790-1862) was born in Virginia and graduated from the College of William and Mary in 1807. His father was, at the time, the governor of Virginia. The younger Tyler started a law practice in Richmond, and served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1816 to 1821, as Virginia governor from 1825 to 1827, and as U.S. Senator from 1827 to 1836. In 1841, he became the tenth President of the United States and the first president to be elevated to office from the vice presidency, when William Henry Harrison died after only a month in office. Dubbed "His Accidency" by critics, Tyler charted his own course as president, leading to vetoes, Cabinet resignations and an impeachment attempt. Tyler retired to his Virginia plantation, Sherwood Forest. In February 1861, he chaired a convention in Washington to avert civil war but disapproved of the convention's proposed resolutions and then presided over the Virginia Secession Convention. He later served in the Provisional Confederate Congress until his death. National Intelligencer (1800-1870) was a prominent newspaper published in Washington, DC. In 1800, Thomas Jefferson, then vice president and a candidate for the presidency, persuaded Samuel Harrison Smith, the publisher of a Philadelphia newspaper, to open a newspaper in Washington, the new capital. Smith began publishing the National Intelligencer, & Washington Advertiser three times a week on October 31, 1800. In 1809, Joseph Gales (1786-1860) became a partner and took over as sole proprietor a year later. From 1812, Gales and his brother-in-law William Winston Seaton (1785-1866) were the newspaper's publishers for nearly fifty years. From 1813 to 1867, it was published daily as the Daily National Intelligencer and was the dominant newspaper of the capital. Supporters of the administrations of Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe, Gales and Seaton were the official printers of Congress from 1819 to 1829. From the 1830s to the 1850s, the National Intelligencer was one of the nation's leading Whig newspapers, with conservative, unionist principles.

It’s one of his earliest works, and though rough in form, it’s fascinating as a blueprint for the naturalism and psychological intensity that would define Norris’s later novels like McTeague (1899) and The Octopus (1901)."...a picture of the war that every man wages in his soul with varying success". - dust jacket flap. Description
New York: Rockefeller University Press, 1934. First edition. GROUNDBREAKING STUDY PROVIDED DEFINITIVE PROOF OF DISCOVERY OF THE MUMPS VIRUS. 24.5 x 16.5 cm journal extract, pp 1-19 (including 3 charts, 2 tables), 3 plates. Near fine in archival custom clear polypropylene binder. ABSTRACT: From four out of six specimens of saliva from six cases of mumps in the early stages of the disease, a filterable cytotropic virus has been obtained which induces in M. rhesus monkeys, following inoculation of the parotid glands through Stensen's duct, an acute, non-suppurative parotitis analogous to mumps. 2. This virus has not been found in normal saliva, nor does it correspond to any known virus with which we are familiar. 3. The virus is free of demonstrable microorganisms including spirochetes. 4. It is judged that this virus is the causative agent of mumps. GARRISON-MORTON No. 5543. During the First World War, mumps was one of the most debilitating diseases among soldiers. In 1934, the etiology of the disease, the mumps virus, was discovered by Claude D. Johnson and Ernest William Goodpasture (offered here). They found that rhesus macaques exposed to saliva taken from humans in the early stages of the disease developed mumps. Furthermore, they showed that mumps could then be transferred to children via filtered and sterilized, bacteria-less preparations of macerated monkey parotid tissue, showing that it was a viral disease. ERNEST WILLIAM GOODPASTURE (1886 – 1960) was an American pathologist and physician. Goodpasture advanced the scientific understanding of the pathogenesis of infectious diseases, parasitism, and a variety of rickettsial and viral infections. Goodpasture's scientific research principally concerned infectious diseases. He contributed to understanding the neural spread of herpes viruses, identification of the mumps virus, development of antiviral vaccines, and studies of rickettsial, fungal, and protozoan human diseases. In a major advance, he introduced the chicken embryo as an experimental host for investigation of microbial infections and for production of vaccines. This technique made possible the development and production of a wide range of vaccines against viral diseases.

Generally a clean copy; corners bent
Description
Belgium: Ludion, 2015. First edition. Generally a clean copy; corners bent. 12 x 9.5 inches. 464 pages. Profusely illustrated in color. Original pictorial boards. Published on the occasion of the exhibition held at QM Gallery Al Riwaq, Doha, from 2015 to 2016. "Belgian painter Luc Tuymans (born 1958), one of the key figures in the 1990s revival of figurative painting, is also one of contemporary art's great history painters, tackling historical traumas and their representations in a restrained--though resolutely painterly--style and pale, muted palette. Far from accepting painting as obsolete or inadequate, throughout his career Tuymans has used painting to engage with the most painful, urgent subjects of the past and present, from the aftermath of the Second World War and Belgium's colonial past to the War on Terror. "I still indulge in the perversity of painting," said Tuymans, "which remains interesting." Luc Tuymans: Intolerance, published to accompany a major retrospective at the Qatar Museums in Doha (the artist's first show in the Gulf region), surveys Tuymans' work from the past 25 years. Comprehensive and richly illustrated, it contains more than 800 reproductions: studies, archival material and installation photographs, as well as 60 drawings and 100 paintings (including Tuymans' new body of work, The Arena, created for the exhibition). Also included are texts by Jan Avgikos, Nicholas Cullinan, Jenevive Nykolak, Nicholas Serota and exhibition curator Lynne Cooke, offering new insights into Tuymans' oeuvre from the past three decades" (the publisher).

[Howgego II S33, Cambridge Polar Record V38 Issue 204]. The Hakluyt Society was founded in 1846 in London for the publication of primary sources of exploration and discovery expeditions. They were named after Richard Hakluyt (1552-1616) a collector and editor of narratives of voyages and travels. The publications are primarily from English expeditions related to English interests from the 17th century on. The Society is still very active and publishing historic works in a series of publications - the first from 1847-99, the second from 1899-1998 and the third beginning in 1999. In addition, there is an Extra series of more extensive books for direct sale to the public. William Smith (1790-1847) was the Captain of the merchant brig Williams that traded in South America. During the voyage in 1819 he discovered the South Shetland Islands on the north west tip of the Antarctic Peninsula. This group of islands includes Desolation, King George, Clarence, Elephant and several other islands. After advising the British Navy of his discovery, Captain Shirreff chartered the Williams to confirm the sightings. Under Captain Bransfield the Williams with Smith as master and Poynter, as one of the midshipmen, sailed in early 1820 to the islands and discovered the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula as well as additional islands and made several landings. During that same period, other American and British whale and seal hunting ships were in the area and discovering additional lands. Charles Wittit Poynter (1798-1878) was a Royal Navy midshipman that was assigned to the Williams under Captain Bransfield. He kept a detailed journal of the voyage from Valpariso to the South Shetland Islands that were discovered in 1998 and are now in the New Zealand National Library Turnbull collection. These journals are an important first-hand account of the voyage and discoveries. The Hakluyt Society decided to publish the journals with R. J. Campbell as editor. In addition to the Poynter journals, this book includes related information and voyages.
