First Latin edition of Dürer’s first book on the theory of art, the Unterweisung der Messung, bound with the first Lat
Description
Paris: Christian Wechel, 1532. First Latin edition of Dürer’s first book on the theory of art, the Unterweisung der Messung, bound with the first Latin edition of his treatise on fortification, “strictly speaking the first treatise dealing exclusively with this subject” (Krufft), with important material on urban planning and utopianism.1) Illustrated by Dürer himself, the Institutionum Geometricarum outlines the artist’s theory of “the work of art as a natural object”, which became an accepted aesthetic dogma until the 19th century. Far more than the German original of 1525, this translation by the humanist Camerarius brought the treatise to the attention of the whole of Europe. As a theoretical statement by “the last major painter to be counted a significant geometer” (Kemp), the work is naturally of interest for applications in Dürer’s own oeuvre as well as for the history of perspective. After his encounter with Luca Pacioli in Italy, Dürer became convinced of how close the links are between art and mathematics and devoted himself to the study of form through the resources offered by arithmetic and geometry. The result was the present work. In this work Dürer teaches the principles of perspective and explains the application of practical geometry to drawing and painting. It became a very influential text as its audience broadened from artists to architects, sculptors, and different craftsmen and was translated and reprinted several times.Panofsky describes the treatise’s importance as three-fold: for the technical innovation in the construction of a perspective apparatus in which the eye of the observer is dispensed with entirely; for being the first literary document “in which a strictly representational problem received a strictly scientific treatment at the hands of a Northerner”; and for emphasizing that “perspective is not a technical discipline destined to remain subsidiary to painting or architecture, but an important branch of mathematics, capable of being developed into what is now known as general projective geometry” (Panofsky, p. 252).Book Three contains Dürer’s famous treatise on the just shaping of Roman capital letters and gothic or ‘Textur’ letters built up by means of small geometrical forms, a method original with Dürer. (This text was translated into English by R.T. Nichol for publication by the Grolier Club, Of the Just Shaping of Letters, New York, 1917.)2) Inspired by the artist’s witnessing the siege of Hohenasperg in 1519 and by fear of the advancing Turkish armies, Krufft writes, De Urbibus “employs a dual approach. On the one hand Dürer develops various alternatives for the construction of bastions to defend existing cities; this is the contemporary aspect. At the heart of the treatise, he outlines a utopian city, in which the nature of fortification merely serves as a spur to the depiction of a social structure organized on the ground... Related trades are placed side by side; smiths are to be housed near foundries, etc. The town hall and the houses of the nobility are sited near the royal palace. The whole system of organization is hierarchical and functional. Dürer thinks of every function of the city, right down to the taverns” (Krufft, History of Architectural Theory, p. 110 ). Elsewhere Krufft suggests that Serlio employed the present treatise in book VI.According to Mortimer, the woodblocks are close copies of the 1527 German original.* 1)Mortimer, French I.182; Vagnetti E II.b7; Panofsky, The Life and Art of Albrecht Dürer, Chapter 8, “Dürer as a theorist of Art”, esp. 247-60; Kemp, The Science of Art, 53ff.; 2) Mortimer, French I.184; Fowler 113 (1527 German); Krufft, History of Architectural Theory, 110-111.. (4) ff., recto of last leaf blank, woodcut of man with lute on verso, 185 pp., (verso blank), (1) f. (printer’s device on verso, recto blank); folding extensions on P6 & Q1 as required by Mortimer. Bound in 18th-century calf over boards, spine with raised bands re-backed, later red morocco title label. Title dusty; occasional toning; small wormtrack through much of volume, generally in blank margin but occasionally grazing a partial letter or printed border on plates. Withal a fresh copy, very good.[Bound with:]DÜRER, Albrecht. De Urbibus, Arcibus, castellisque condendis, ac muniendis rationes aliquot, praesenti bellorum necessitati accomodatissimae ... Paris, Christian Wechel, 1535. (40) ff., including 10 double-page/extended leaves as described by Mortimer.

Description
159 pp. & one leaf with index & colophon. Small 8vo (180 x 115 mm.), orig. printed pictorial softcover (spine worn), author portrait on lower cover. Guaymas, Mexico: Joaquín Mortiz, August 1970. First and only edition of Carrión’s second book, a collection of six short stories, printed in a numbered edition of 3000 copies. In the 1960s, Carrión (1941-89) was one of Mexico’s emerging literary talents; a number of his short stories had been published in leading journals, and his first play, El Gran Espectáculo, was performed at the Casa de la Cultura de Tlacotalpan, Veracruz, to rave reviews. Following his studies in philosophy and letters at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, he spent time in France and Germany (1964-65), with the aid of scholarships, learning both languages. Dissatisfaction with the Mexican literary world and local hostility toward the gay community drove Carrión to emigrate to Amsterdam in 1970, where he found a progressive and free-spirited milieu. From then on he conscientiously abandoned literature and fully dedicated his life and work to the visual arts, in the form of books, films, social experiments, performances, mail art, etc. This book represents the artist’s final moment as a traditional/conventional author, preceding his conversion to experimental and avant-garde methods of communication. “In 1970, he published [a second] six-story collection, De Alemania, considered a more mature work. Here, he has perfected the interior monologue, which is the primary manner in which his characters disclose themselves. In some stories, the salient characteristic is alienation, but in others, Carrión employs humor as a catalyst. Since such characteristics are not always mutually exclusive, he does achieve a delicate balance between the two.”–Dictionary of Mexican Literature (1992), ed. Eladio Cortés, p. 147. Very good copy, internally fine; spine a little creased, as with most copies. Housed in a cloth clamshell box.

Description
Octon: Verdigris Press, 2003. Limited Edition. Folio in a case. Fine. Rothchild, Judith. Number 10 of 50 copies, quarto size, [20] pp., signed by Judith Rothchild and the printer Mark Lintott. Wallace Stevens (1879-1955) was "one of America's most respected poets. He was a master stylist, employing an extraordinary vocabulary and a rigorous precision in crafting his poems. But he was also a philosopher of aesthetics, vigorously exploring the notion of poetry as the supreme fusion of the creative imagination and objective reality." (N.B., from the web site of the Poetry Foundation.) "Study of Two Pears" was first published in 1954 in The Collected Poems of Wallace Stevens, and is here translated into French by Bernard Noel. The title asserts itself as being concerned with visual arts, and each stanza tugs at the tension between reality that is observed and imaginative reality, the observer sees the pears but not as he wills, language fails to adequately describe them as they are without the use of metaphor. There might be no more appropriate poem to illustrate than this, as the speaker's desire to describe the pears without relating them to anything else is an act of reduction which ultimately expands the image by showing us the many things they do resemble. Illustrated by Rothchild's velvety, hyper-realistic mezzotints which follow the progress of the stanzas, each print gradually growing brighter, the pears illustrated from every possible angle, becoming more definite and resolved along with the poem. ___DESCRIPTION: Original wrappers screen-printed with a design of green, brown and orange, with the title letterpress printed to the backstrip and upper wrapper in dark green, loose leporello, deckled fore-edge, nine mezzotints, two blind-stamped sets of pears to fly-leaves, text in English and French; handset type, Hahnemuhle paper, quarto size (11" by 11.75"), unpaginated with [20] pp., limited edition, this number 10 of 50 copies, signed by printer Mark Lintott and Judith Rothchild. Housed in a heavy cardboard slipcase covered in green paper and similarly screen-printed in shades of green, lined with plain green paper. ___CONDITION: Fine; crisp, clean; other than a hint of rubbing to the top corners and a small rubbed spot on the spine of the backstrip, as new, and free of prior owner markings; in a like case. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. [TRAVEL] [ADVERTISING] [EPHEMERA.] 8vo; 287 [1]pp; stiff glazed color pictorial wrapper; b&w photographic illustrations; ads; chipping and creasing to wrapper; very good. Interesting look at the early 20th century British travel industry. Leicestershire cabinetmaker Thomas Cook founded an agency in 1841 to transport temperance supporters to a meeting site by rail. He expanded travel groups in support of the movement for Sunday schools and temperance societies through 1845. His first commercial venture was in 1845, a trip of more than 100 miles to Liverpool by train. Cook subsequently began organizing trips to Europe, including hotels, cruises, and eventually airlines. It has been said that he invented the modern travel industry. Sold and reorganized several times throughout the late 20th and early 21st centuries, the company collapsed in 2019 when bankers demanded repayment of loans. The company, unable to pay, stranded travelers around the world. This brochure covers travel promoted by the Thomas Cook company to Great Britain and Ireland, Switzerland, France, Western Europe, Belgium, Holland, Italy, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Russia (U.S.S.R.), the Balkans, Spain and Portugal, Egypt, Palestine and Syria, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Finland. A sea and land tour, "Sea Holidays" to the Dalmatian Coast, around Corsica, and to Belgium, Holland and Germany. Cruises advertised to Canada and U.S.A., Madeira and Canary Isles, South America and Africa, as well as "Pleasure Cruises." Includes travel pricing and delightful ads for hotels and resorts. OCLC only locates one copy at the National Library of Wales. Scarce.
