Description
Rome: Ioannes Orlandi [Giovanni Orlandi], 1600. Very Good. Antonio Tempesta. A whirlwind of action so teeming with combatants, their mounts, their long spears and other weapons it captures the blur of actual combat in this battle scene between the Greeks and Amazons. 30 by 39 cm. (Our copy is original, but original margins were cut away. There is no loss of the illustration nor of the caption, nor the printed line demarcating the margins from the rest. Mounting on a larger sheet creates the impression of the margins, though.) We can not make a definitive statement about the rarity of the print. We would note that the only institution indicated as possessing the print on OCLC First Search is in Leiden, but we do not think the database captures prints anywhere near the extent it picks up books of the same date as this print. We note, though, that the British Library doesn't have a copy in its vast print collection, as reflected in its print catalogue on line. There is also a single auction record we would able to locate. On the other hand, the print will show up with a simple Google search. The printer, Giovanni Orlandi, was an engraver and print maker active in Rome from around 1590 to 1613, at which time he relocated to Naples, according to a short biography on the British Library website. As to the battle scene, it is derived from Greek mythology, in which battle with the Amazons was a recurring story line, and such a battle was also appended to narratives of the Trojan Wars. Condition: other than the removal of margins, light wear.
