Description
91 drawings, using brush & color washes on sheets measuring 710 x 660 mm., all within two loose binder boards. [Japan]: from a pasted-on note from the lower board: “91 drawings…13 August 1860.” A remarkable collection of 91 large and fine drawings of botanical subjects for paintings on coffered ceilings (gotenjo or goutenjo or goutenjou) of aristocratic homes, shrines, and temples, mainly in Kyoto, prepared by many of the disciples and students of Matsumura Keibun (1779-1843), the Japanese painter known as “Go Keibun.” A leading figure in the Shijo school established by his half-brother Goshun Matsumura, Keibun was most noted for his delicate and elegantly composed studies of birds and flowers. The upper board has an inscription: “Shinden naka no ma. On tenjo shitae no utsushi” [“Shinden-style buildings middle chamber. Precious drawings for ceiling paintings. Copies”]. Shinden-zukuri was a style of aristocratic mansion built in the mid-10th century in Kyoto. By the 19th century, those mansions that survived, along with temples and shrines, needed renovations and redecorations. These drawings were prepared for such activities. They may be copies of Keibun’s work by his students or original designs in the style of their master. Each drawing is signed with a pen name and a label identifying the plant or flower; all are in roughly the same style. We have been able to identify 11 of the artists: Seiki Yokoyama (1792-1864; see Hillier, p. 922; five drawings), Obun Matsumura (the son of Keibun; three drawings), Kiho Yagi (seven drawings), Keika Nakao (one drawing), Nikka Tanaka (four drawings), Gisho (or Yoshiaki) Mori (five drawings), Kado Isono (five drawings), Kokei Tomita (four drawings), Bunrin Shiokawa (seven drawings), Mohiko Okamoto (six drawings), and Goho Tanaka (five drawings). We have not been able to identify the artists of the remaining 39 signed drawings. In fine condition, preserved in chitsu. A few folds with minor tears. ❧ Brown, Block Printing & Book Illustration in Japan, p. 91-”Keibun…was chiefly noted for his paintings of flowers and birds.” Hillier, The Art of the Japanese Book, pp. 713-14.

Venice: Nicolo de Aristotele detto Zoppino, 1535. Hardcover. Very Good. Folio (295 x 190mm). [12], I-CX, (110ff.) Signatures: AA6-BB6; A8-N8; O6. Title printed in red and black with woodcut block border depicting strewn armor and dueling knights with wreathed portrait of Cicero at top and plaques with monogram initials of Roman Emperors Fabius Maximus, Julius Caesar, and Alexander Magnus. 136 woodcut in-text illustrations depicting lives of primitive humans, the famous Vitruvian Man on p. XXII, constellations, rules for perspective, and other mathematical figures and diagrams of architecture. Woodcut historiated chapter initials throughout of repeating portraits. Translated by Benedetto Giovio (1471-1545). Edited by Francesco Lutio Durantino. 19th-century calf with decorative stamps, spine stamped in gilt TRAT DE ARCH, endpapers renewed; (loose in binding, some margins trimmed close, some light worming, at least six early cancelled inscriptions on title, leaf CX with significant excision, otherwise an crisp and clean text block with wonderful woodcut impressions). 19th-century inscription on fly-leaf “Famoza Archi-tectura.” Another 19th-century inscription on front flyleaf, “Presented to the Mercantile Library Association of New York by Philip A Reach ...Consul/ Lisbon Jan. 7 1848.” Sold in 1958 “on removal of Architecture Books from the Library” (pencil note). Rare illustrated Durantino edition of Vitruvius printed in Venice by Zoppino in 1535. This Vitruvius work was first printed in 1521 for Como. As it gained notoriety, another edition in the vernacular Italian was prepared by Giovanni Antonio and Pietro de’ Nicolino da Sabbio in 1524. It incorporated woodcuts from a 1511 Latin edition produced by Giovanni Giocondo in Venice (Tacuino). This Zoppino printing had a newly redesigned title-leaf with an elaborate woodcut border of chivalric battle scenes between Augustus Caesar, Julius Caesar, and Alexander the Great. The 136 in-text woodcuts are an all too interesting miscellany of late-medieval life, nature, and architecture and are characteristic of Vitruvian ideals in regards to proportion, ornament, language, space, place and beauty. The famous figure of “Symmetria” (Vitruvian Man) is present on p. XXII. Both the 1524 and 1535 editions were widely read by an Italian public. Vitruvian principles deeply influenced early Renaissance artists, thinkers, and architects who believed they were rediscovering an ancient discipline which would be the foundation of their culture. Description
1930. GURIAN, Olga and Elena FRADKINA. Trudnaia zagadka [Complicated Riddle]. By K.T. Chukovsky. 16 pp. 4to, publisher's illustrated wrappers in a new cloth folding box. [Moscow]: Gosudarstvennoe izdatel'stvo, 1930. A Constructivist lithographic book by a well-known children's writer Olga Gurian (1899-1973) who wrote over 50 books about different crafts. The main structure of the book is a dialogue: a mother asks her son a riddle: "What is warm in the winter but cold in the summer?" The son was full of doubt even after discussion with his friends. Then the mother gives him a hint: "It is fed with a thing that firstly is green, then white, then red, then black". The friends offer their versions but have no consensus. Finally, the boy realizes that it is an oven that is fed with firewood. This edition was co-designed by two female artists who were both known for their stage designs. Elena Fradkina (1901-1981) studied in Vkhutemas with A. Lentulov and P. Konchalovskii. She worked in the Kyiv Russian Theater, the Theater of Moscow Soviet of Trade Unions, the Moscow Children's Theater. Sofia Vishnevetskaia (1899-1962) studied at the Kyiv art studio of A. Ekster in 1916-1920. Since 1921, she worked in the Moscow Kamerny Theater. Together, they also designed children's books Golden Leaves (1927), Throughout the Year (1929), Frame-Up (1927).

Description
New York: Random House, 1936. Glad You Like Our Zany Songs..." A Warmly Inscribed Copy of The Kalmar-Ruby Song Book with an Exceptional Letter from Harry Ruby to Leslie Bricusse RUBY, Harry. KALMAR, Bert. The Kalmar-Ruby Song Book. With "reasonably accurate dissertations" by Franklin P. Adams, Robert Benchley, Irving Berlin, Marc Connelly, Moss Hart, Ben Hecht, Nunnally Johnson, Groucho Marx, and James K. McGuinness. New York: Random House, [1936]. First edition. Large quarto (12 1/4 x 9 3/8 inches; 311 x 238 mm.). [10], 111, [1, blank] pp. Publisher's original quarter tan buckram over pictorial red boards decoratively printed in black and cream with whimsical musical symbols and notation. Edges worn, as usual with this fragile production, yet still a very good example. Inscribed by Harry Ruby on the front free endpaper to Leslie Bricusse: "To Leslie Bricusse - What a joy & 'privilege' it is to sign this crazy book over to you. So glad you go for my 'non-sensical' songs...Thanks a lot -Sincerely Harry Ruby" The inscription is embellished with a hand-drawn musical phrase and concludes with the playful postscript: "P.S. - Please sign something of yours over to me -" Loosely laid in is an excellent typed letter signed from Harry Ruby to Leslie Bricusse, dated February 24, 1970, on Ruby's personal stationery from Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles. In the letter Ruby responds warmly to Bricusse's admiration for the songs he wrote with Bert Kalmar, writing: "He was a wonderful man." Ruby then reveals a remarkable personal detail concerning Kalmar's death: "He died, by the way, two days after he signed the contract for MGM to do the movie: Three Little Words - based, as it said, on the songs and lives of Bert Kalmar and Harry Ruby..." The letter is filled with Ruby's characteristic comic warmth and self-deprecating humor. Explaining the faded typing, he jokes: "The black ink part of the typewriter ribbon has faded. I shan't buy another ribbon until I write another hit song." He also comments affectionately on the pair's comic compositions: "Glad you like our zany songs... I love doing them... even more than I love writing regular songs... that help pay the rent... provide food, clothing and shelter." Ruby further notes that he would contact "Happy Goday" regarding the book, offering a small but evocative glimpse into the network of theatrical and Hollywood music personalities surrounding Bricusse during this period. An especially appealing association between two generations of distinguished songwriter-lyricists. Harry Ruby and Bert Kalmar were among the defining creators of Broadway and Hollywood's comic musical sensibility during the interwar years, while Leslie Bricusse would become one of the great composer-lyricists of the postwar era. The volume includes many of Kalmar and Ruby's most celebrated songs, including Three Little Words, Nevertheless (I'm in Love with You), and material associated with the Marx Brothers and Animal Crackers. The contributor list itself forms a remarkable gathering of American literary and theatrical wit, including Robert Benchley, Irving Berlin, Ben Hecht, Moss Hart, and Groucho Marx. A delightful and deeply personal musical-theater association copy linking the sophisticated comic songwriting of Tin Pan Alley and Broadway's golden age with one of the last great writer-composers of the modern stage.

Description
[Seymour, Tx, 1953. Good.. Two souvenir programs, brochure, admission ticket, and participant's number placard. Noticeable foxing, moderate edge wear, some offsetting to cover and in brochure, placard worn and partially torn. An interesting group of four items related to the 1953 Seymour Rodeo & Reunion held in Seymour, Texas from June 18-20, 1953, and one earlier item from a related event in the town. Seymour, Texas is a tiny rural town of about 3,000 residents located in Baylor County, about 150 miles northwest of Fort Worth. The Seymour Rodeo is one of the longest-running rodeos in Texas, begun in 1896; the rodeo just celebrated its 129th anniversary event in July 2025, and is now known as the Old Settlers Reunion and Rodeo. The five items present here are detailed as follows. As far as we can tell, the printed items are unrecorded: 1) Souvenir Program. The 57th Annual Seymour Rodeo & Reunion [wrapper title]. [Seymour, Tx.: 1953]. 16pp. Original pictorial wrappers, stapled. Moderate foxing, some creasing to wrappers, small portion of one leaf missing. An informative program for the 1953 rodeo, listing the committees responsible for the event, portrait photographs of some of the notable town leaders, and a biographical passage and portrait of the "Hostess Sponsor of the 1953 Seymour Rodeo and Reunion," Miss Betty Lynn Stout. The remainder of the program is comprised of local advertisements from a variety of businesses, including Humble Oil, the Rock Inn Cafe, the Baylor County Banner newspaper, and others. 2) [Leaflet Listing the 1953 Rodeo Contestants]. [Seymour: 1953]. [4]pp., on a single folded sheet. Some adhesive remnants and staining to front cover. Lists the events and officials on the front cover, the 203 rodeo participants on the inside spread, and some advertisements on the back cover. 3) [Admission Ticket for 1953 Rodeo]. [Seymour: 1953]. Yellow cardstock, printed in red and black, 2 x 5.5 inches. Minor edge and surface wear, some adhesive remnants on verso. A ticket for the June 19, 1953 performance of the Seymour Rodeo & Reunion at Fair Park Stadium in Seymour. 4) [Participant's Rodeo Number Placard]. Vinyl backed on linen, printed in black, 7 x 8 inches. Substantial wear and chipping, some paper remnants adhered to recto. Well-used, but that stands to reason. A numbr placard reading, "367" in large block numbers, evidently worn by one of the participants in the 1953 rodeo. 5) Eighth Annual Baylor County Fair and Rodeo [wrapper title]. [Seymour, Tx.: 1927]. [80]pp. Original pictorial wrappers, stapled. Substantial foxing and dust-soiling to wrappers. Minor foxing within. An early program for another rodeo and agricultural fair in Seymour which began in 1919, and was known as the Baylor County Fair and Rodeo. The program includes a foreword about the fair, a two-page county history, a short directory of some important local businesses and civic and social organizations, rules regarding exhibits at the fair, detailed listings of prizes available per agricultural product, a special section on the "Women's Department" of the fair, and more. The program is also valuable for containing legions of advertisments for local businesses that were operating in such a small Texas town a hundred years ago.

(endpaper map illustration) Utopian fantasy novel about a young millionaire who forms a new republic on a Pacific island, with many of its ideals and general principles centering around the economic emancipation of women (which will also have the more pragmatic effect of protecting his sister from various suitors who are after her for her money). A contemporary reviewer, apparently unswayed by visions such an egalitarian society, thought it "a tale even more dizzy than is indicated by its yellow and purple paper jacket," that "rises to thrilling heights of battle, murder, and sudden death, and drops sheerly to depths of abysmally dull intrigue, like nothing in the world so much as a scenic railway." At least the author (or perhaps just the blurb-writer) can't be cited for lack of ambition, for the book is purported to make "a Direct Appeal to Puritans and Impuritans, Socialists and Individualists, Mothers and 'Old Maids,' Woman-haters and Flirts, [and] Scientists and Hod-Carriers." Don't miss the endpaper maps of the island of Volonor, which you'll need to find your way to the .

Santa Fe: Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce. Map. 8 3/4" x 12". Included in pamphlet entitled "The City Different. Descriptive Guide to Santa Fe and Vicinity Road Maps." This detailed map of the national park to park highway was published in a Santa Fe travel pamphlet from around the 1920s. It depicts all the city stops on the highway as well as the nearby national parks on the route. In a time when the west was still relatively new and cars weren't owned by everyone yet, this map is a unique demonstration of the luxury of car travel during that time.
