Description
n.p.: n.p., n.d.. Hardcover. Near Fine. Full chestnut morocco, boards and spine ornately stamped in gilt and blind, including "Grevedon" in blind, and "F.H." in gilt, on upper board; oblong 8vo (305x235mm); contains 21 original pencil drawings, each about 90x140mm, mounted to the recto only, one per leaf. Undated, but likely drawn in the late-18th or early-19th century (tho they could be as late as mid-19th); a pencilled notation on the FFEP indicates that the artist is Pierre-Louis Henri Grevedon, and the drawings collected by Franklin De Haven. Just a little light wear to binding; internally very clean, with the small leather ex-libris of American collector Robert Hoe. Grevedon (1776-1860) was known for his beautiful portraits of young women, and these bust-length portraits are no exception; showing all sorts of women, some plainly dressed (perhaps a maid), and others in more extravagant costume (coiffure, headdress), including a bride. Grevedon published several collections of drawings in his lifetime, and some of his works now reside in the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum, Art Institute of Chicago, Harvard, and more.

Description
1824. First Edition. JOHNSON, John. Typographia, or the Printer's Instructor: Including an Account of the Origin of Printing, with Biographical Notices of the Printers of England, from Caxton to the Close of the Sixteenth Century. London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, Brown & Green, 1824. Two volumes. Royal octavo, contemporary three-quarter brown morocco, raised bands, marbled boards and endpapers, top edge gilt, uncut. $3500.First edition of this history of printing, the largest of four sizes published (royal octavo), with two wood-engraved title pages by J. Thompson, three wood-engraved plates, and numerous wood-engraved in-text illustrations and vignettes including portraits of printers and printer's devices, handsomely bound in contemporary morocco. A ""Roxburghe copy,"" distributed to the famous bibliophilic Roxburghe Club, with additional engraved title page in each volume. The copy of Nonesuch Press founder Francis Meynell, with his bookplates.""Of the few standard works on the art of printing in the English language, this is perhaps the most familiar… It has long since become, and deservedly, a printer's classic"" (Bigmore & Wyman I:371-73). While primarily focusing on the history of printing in Great Britain, including a list of productions through 1599, this work is also valuable for its information on printing in different countries and foreign alphabet. The first volume is generally regarded as historical, whereas the second volume offers practical information on types, composition, and the actual work of a press. Especially notable is the quality of the printing, in terms of both the typography and the wonderful borders on every text page comprising floral and linear rules. This is a so-called Roxburghe copy, in royal octavo format with an additional engraved title page in each volume. The Roxburghe Club was formed in the wake of the record-setting auction of the Duke of Roxburghe's library. The night after the auction, 18 avid bibliophiles met for a dinner presided over by the 2nd Earl Spencer. From that point forward, the Roxburghe Club began meeting annually. Highly exclusive, only 40 members have been allowed at any one time (with each prospective member having to escape blackballing by the other members). Indeed, the Club has only had 350 members overall. The main expectation of the Club is that each member must publish a small, deluxe edition of a rare or curious book. This work, however, was published by John Johnson himself at the Apollo Press. Johnson had formerly been a master printer at the Lee Priority Press, founded by Roxburghe Club member Samuel Egerton Brydges. Dedicated to the Roxburghe Club and its members including the 2nd Earl Spencer, its president, this first edition was published in four sizes: 32mo, 16mo, octavo, and royal octavo—with the last distributed to the Roxburghe Club.. Lowndes I:1028. Bookplates of Francis Meynell, the respected painter and poet as well as the founder of the Nonesuch Press, which was committed to leveraging modern technology to produce beautiful and affordable books designed on an Albion Press but printed by larger commercial outfits. Armorial bookplates of book collector William Cowan (""Sic Itur in Altum"").Tiny bookseller ticket.Interiors generally quite lovely with only a couple isolated spots of foxing and shallow marginal dampstain to Volume I, joints expertly reinforced. Near-fine condition.

Description
12mo., (6), 54 ff., 1 folding table. Bound in modern calf à l'antique. Underlining and a few textual annotations in Latin in an early hand; with manuscript text on endleaf; scattered staining to final quire; ff. 53-54 with worming affecting a few letters of text of 6 words repaired. Light even browning throughout. Otherwise good.Rare first French edition (first Latin 1618) of this pocket summary of the Lullian art for lawyers, by the Italian born Aristotelian and legal theorist Giulio Pace. Hillgarth groups Pace's introduction with that of another jurist, Pierre Grégoire, as being exceptional among 17th century interpreters of Lull: both avoid digressions into alchemy, cabalism and magic, and stick more closely to Lull's traditional interests in argumentation (Ramon Lull and Lullism, p. 294); hence its application to legal argumentation. While Lull's teachings took on a life of their own—and one speaks of Lullism as a philosophical method and doctrine with a self-contained history--, the origin for a system of argumentation lay in a project of messianic evangelization. "The Art can be understood correctly only when viewed in the light of Lull's primary aim: to place Christian apologetics on a rational basis for use in disputations with Muslims, for whom arguments of "octroi"grounded on the Old Testament—widely used by Dominicans in disputations with the Jews—carried no weight." Pring-Mill in DSB VIII.548. Pace was born in Vicenza in 1530 and studied law and philosophy in Padua. Deeply affected by the Reformation, he eventually moved to Geneva and became a Protestant. According to Schmidt (Aristotle and the Renaissance 43), his edition of the Organon became standard during its shelf-life of 11 editions (1584-1623)—and in the north. He also wrote a great many legal titles. In addition to the introduction to Lull, he performed a similar service for Ramus. OCLC lists a single U.S. copy of this French edition: Wisconsin. The Latin is held by Berkeley Law, Chicago and the Newberry.

Description
London & New York: Macmillan & Co., 1900. Bound in sumptuous midnight blue full levant by Bumpus Binders of Oxford, 8vo., 708 pages including index of first lines. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Shelley. The binding is, like the poet, deeply romantic. The six paneled spine is laden with gilt hearts and sinuous gilt borders punctuated by chaste pointielles. Both upper and lower covers have dual linear borders and gilt hearts, the design beautifully mirrored on the turn-ins. All edges gilt. Aside from some light minor wear, primarily confined to the lower cover, this is an exceptionally handsome binding from the Art Nouveau period of design. A perfect marriage of poetry and the bookbinder's art.

Description
Philadelphia: Lee & Walker, 1861. 4to. [2], 5, [1 blank] pp. Front wrapper with engraved portrait of Baker, surrounded by angels and the American flag [in color], by T. Sinclair of Philadelphia. Light extremity wear, light dusting, spine reinforced. Else Very Good. In the left corner of the title page the number "5" is printed within six stars, the word "Lithograph" printed to the right of the "5." In the right corner the word "Plain" is printed, with the number "2-1/2" printed within six stars. The Funeral March has music only, no words. When the inexperienced Colonel Baker led troops at the Battle of Ball's Bluff, the results were disastrous. He and many of his men were killed. Lincoln, his old friend from their early days in Illinois, wept. "With no previous combat experience, Baker and his men took poorly chosen positions. . . More than half of Baker's 1,700 men were killed, wounded, or captured" [McPherson, Battle Cry of Freedom 362]. The Funeral March has music, no words. OCLC 79263152 [1- Huntington], 35582126 [1- Lincoln Pres. Lib.] as of August 2023.

2001. ISBN-13: 9781584771661; ISBN-10: 1584771666. The First Significant Criticism of Blackstone's Commentaries Bentham, Jeremy. A Fragment on Government. Edited with an Introduction by F.C. Montague. Originally published: Oxford: The Clarendon Press, 1891. xii, 241 pp. Reprinted 2001 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. ISBN-13: 9781584771661; ISBN-10: 1584771666. Hardcover. New. $29.95 * Bentham's first published work, an essay on sovereignty that criticizes Blackstone's Commentaries and attacks contemporary views on politics and law. This edition includes F.C. Montague's scholarly introduction that shows the significance of the Fragment and includes a biography of Bentham [1748-1832] and a discussion of his role in the history of jurisprudence. "The Fragment on Government is primarily a criticism. If it were nothing more, it would have no interest for later generations, which do not regard Blackstone as an authority upon speculative questions of politics or history, and therefore do not need to have Blackstone's theories corrected or disproved. But in criticizing Blackstone's views, Bentham necessarily expounds his own. As Bentham is one of the few English writers of mark upon the theory of political institutions, and as his doctrine forms a link in the chain of English political philosophy, we still read the Fragment of Government in order to see, not how far Blackstone was wrong, but how far Bentham was right.": Introduction 59. Laeuchli, A Bibliographical Catalog of William Blackstone 588.
