Description
Washington: Privately Printed, 1907. First Edition. Very Good. Privately printed first edition, one of two printings comprising a total of 100 copies. vi, 451 pp., laid paper with wide margins. Quarto, bound in publisher's blue cloth, tan morocco title label to spine, laid endpapers. Very Good with light mottling and soiling to cloth, moderate rubbing to extremities, chipping to morocco label, and light worming to upper textblock edge. Hinges tender, upper right corner slightly bumped throughout, bookplate to front pastedown. From the collection of Estelle Doheny. BAL 32, Howes A52.

The rare true first edition of the Pulitzer-winning autobiography, privately published by Henry Adams and circulated amongst his friends. The descendant of two American presidents, Adams blended the history of his own life with the history of his country, chronicling the political and social turbulence of the late 19th century. He printed 40 advance copies of the book and sent them to living friends who were mentioned in its pages, explaining to one friend: “I send you a volume, in the nature of proof-sheets, which contains allusions to you and yours which I wish you would glance at, and after running your pen through anything that seems to you personally objectionable return the volume to me.” Some years later, the demands from Adams’ other friends for copies of their own led him to print another run of 60 copies. The two print runs are indistinguishable, and this unmarked copy could be from either one. It belonged to the renowned book collector and philanthropist Estelle Doheny (1897-1958), a devout Catholic who left most of her property to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles but donated some of her treasures to the Missouri seminary St. Mary's of the Barrens. The Education of Henry Adams was among them, and rested at the seminary for almost 50 years until it was auctioned off with the rest of the collection in 2001. The slightly revised trade edition of The Education of Henry Adams was published to great acclaim in 1918 and is now considered a classic of American literature. Adams is both omnipresent and elusive in his autobiography, which makes no mention of his happy marriage and its tragic end. Its dominant theme is the contrast between medieval unity and modern multiplicity. The author was a well-heeled, well-traveled, well-connected man and brought all his experience and education to bear on his deconstruction of Western society. He wrote of himself, in the third person: “Probably no child, born in the year, held better cards than he. Whether life was an honest game of chance, or whether the cards were marked and forced, he could not refuse to play his excellent hand.”.

Description
Portland, OR: Nazraeli Press, 2017. First Edition. Fine. 124 Volumes [100 titles + five multi-volume deluxe sets, and duplicates of several titles, several labeled AP for Artist's Proof.] A complete run of the celebrated series, which features 100 uniformly sized books of various colors, giving each artist a 16-page canvas to exhibit a cohesive body of work. Each volume is limited to 500 copies, and each contains one photographic print tipped in and signed by the artist--hence the name of the series. Conceived in 1998 as a way to make original art more affordable, titles were originally released in groups of four, generally twice a year beginning in 2000 and ending in 2017, with most copies reserved in advance for subscribers. Complete sets of the 100 titles are uncommon, as many volumes are out of print; even more uncommon are those with the deluxe box sets, as few were issued toward the beginning of the series. All volumes are Fine to Near Fine. Several volumes with light spine sunning or a slight shelf lean. The deluxe sets are by John Gossage (Four American Photographs), Todd Hido (Taft Street), Eduardo del Valle & Mirta Gomez (Four Sections of Time, all marked as "AP," or artist's proofs), Judy Gelles (Beach Boxes) and Emi Anrakuji (e hakagi) Comprised of 1. Description
London: Macmillan & Company Ltd, 1918. First edition. First edition. xii, 252 pp. Bound in publisher's brown cloth with gilt spine lettering. Fine with a hint of toning to the spine cloth and shelf wear; bright and clean internally save for a name stamped on the title page; sturdy binding. Rare in commerce.Perhaps the standard World War I text on treating post-traumatic stress disorder, then called "shell shock." Those were different times. Yealland, a Canadian doctor working at the British National Hospital, basically believed that shell shock essentially didn't exist, or was merely a temporary condition that needed to be expelled by auto-suggestion, strong language, a spatula to the throat or, in the worst cases, electrical shocks directly to the patient's throat. His complete confidence in himself and his methods (touting an 100% success rate) inspired many at the time, but meant that history would not be kind to his legacy or the data he compiled.

Description
London: Faber & Faber, (1963). First British Edition. Hardcover. Hinges fairly neatly repaired. Very Good, lacking the dustwrapper. Bloomfield A45b: 3000 copies, preceded by the American edition which had a larger printing. INSCRIBED and SIGNED "To/Hedwig [Petzold]/with love/from /Wystan" in 1963 on the front free endpaper and with seven manuscript corrections by Auden in the text. Sensational association copy! According to Humphrey Carpenter in W. H. AUDEN: A BIOGRAPHY (p. 69), Auden's "first sexual experience with a woman was when he went to bed with Frau Petzold ... and in the later period of the friendship he seems to have regarded her as a mother- or aunt-figure."

New York: The Macaulay Company, 1927. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Very Good. First edition. Near fine in very good original jacket. Jacket a bit rubbed with 2 inch closed tear on front panel and 1 inch tear to spine head. Binding tight and square, pages clean, bright, and unmarked. 1927 Hard Cover. 317, [3] pp. By the author of the hit Broadway play Ladies' Night (1920), who also wrote the novels The Butterfly Murder, The Affair of the Malacca Stick, and The Affair of the Syrian Dagger. From the jacket: 'To Amber Lorne - beautiful, indulged and adored - life becomes a series of dramatic gestures. Glorified press-agentry combined with her own high gifts make this American girl the idol of Paris. There she reigns in a super-Bohemia of art and diplomacy, a Queen of unconventionality. With all desirable men at her feet, she wants an unattainable prince. Her gestures become a pattern of tragedy. She lives 'a play' - a tense melodrama. Her supreme gesture is to avenge old wrongs and unravel the mystery of her own origin. Amber Lorne's triumphs in the gay and sometimes grim world of make-believe make this an unforgettable romance of daring, colorful and celebrated people.

Description
S. l. (England): By the author, 1830. Very good. Manuscript, n. d. (first half of the 19th century); single clream-colored sheet, with an elaborately-embossed margins and a hand-colored, pink band around edges; text in brown ink; light age-toning and a few minor spots; remnants from being previously affixed in a scrapbook to verso; in about very good condition. An amusing and a tad bizarre ode, it began: "But bless me! What two non-descripts together! The SHE - a pile of ribbon, straw and feather...a Bonnet! Aye, and an actual woman in it..." It continued on to mention Ross and Buchan (Arctic explorers James Clark Ross (1800 - 1862) and David Buchan (1780 - 1838)) - "Now for the HE...Have Ross or Buchan brought him to console, the quidnuncs for the passage to the Pole?" It ended with: "No, Paris has the honor...The thing is contraband - Let's crush the trade; LADIES insist on't - all is best home made."
