Description
1855. First Edition. GILLISS, J[ames] M[elville]. The U.S. Naval Astronomical Expedition to the Southern Hemisphere During the Years 1849-'50-'51-'52. Washington: A.O.P. Nicholson, 1855. Two volumes. Large quarto, contemporary three-quarter calf, raised bands, black morocco spine labels, marbled boards. $2800.First edition of the official report of Gilliss' important expedition to South America—only the third American Naval Scientific expedition—illustrated with four folding maps, a very large hand-colored folding view of Santa Lucia, Chile, 41 full-page lithographs (four tinted and 19 printed in color), five plans, and 11 wood-engraved vignettes—two large quarto volumes in contemporary calf.Gilliss was one of the highest-ranking astronomers in the United States Navy. ""In August 1848 he succeeded in obtaining $5000 from Congress for a naval astronomical expedition to Chile. The chief purpose was to determine the solar parallax—and thus the scale of the solar system—by observations of Mars and Venus. From August 1849 until its return in November 1852, Gilliss headed this expedition, again making observations far beyond the original purposes of the expedition and leaving behind the foundation for the Chilean National Observatory"" (ANB). The first volume describes Chile as a nation and includes a detailed narrative of the voyage; in Volume II the expedition's scientists describe the animal, mineral, and fossil collections returned by the expedition. Among the illustrations are a three-part folding map of Chile, a beautiful folding view of Santa Lucia, Chile, measuring over four feet, and over two dozen plates of South American fish, bird, and reptile species, many printed in vibrant color. The Report and Observations of the expedition were intended to be published in six volumes. Volumes V and VI were never published; Volume III (not present) contains the expedition's astronomical observations; Volume IV (not present) contains the magnetic and meteorological observations. This is common: as noted on page (iii), 6000 copies of the Report—the present two volumes—were ordered to be published, while only 2000 copies of the two volumes of the more technical Observations were ordered. Sabin 27419. Hill 707. Ex-library with unobtrusive perforated stamp to title page and final text leaf of each volume; library card pocket in Volume II; evidence of same in Volume I; paper shelf labels to spines.Text and plates generally clean, with only occasional foxing; light rubbing to attractive and sound contemporary calf bindings. An extremely good copy.

Description
1796. First Edition. PAINE, Thomas. The Decline and Fall of the English System of Finance. Philadelphia: Printed [by Henry Sweitzer] for Robert Campbell, 1796. Octavo, period-style marbled wraps; pp.(1-3) 4-27 (28). $1500.1796 American edition of Paine's fiery attack on the British financial system, issued the same year as the Paris first edition, asserting the impact of the American Revolution on England, citing Adam Smith and prompting a run on the Bank of England. With Paine's controversial Decline and Fall, he documents the economic impact of the American Revolution on British banks, and cites Adam Smith on the subject of public debt. Developing ideas introduced in The American Crisis (1776-78), ""Paine attacked the English government through its economic system. He set out to prove that within 20 years, Britain's currency would fail… [arguing] that bank notes were not worth the paper on which they are printed."" In April 1796 Paine presented copies of Decline and Fall 'to the French people… The pamphlet generated considerable discussion, especially because it predicted that the bellicose government of England was nearing collapse'"" (Keane, 427-8). With this controversial pamphlet on ""the soundness of English paper money… A run started on the Bank of England and it had to close its doors. Such was the power of Paine's pen!"" (Gimbel-Hall 100). Though ""the success of Decline and Fall was quickly overshadowed by Paine's scandalous attack on George Washington,"" published that July, ""the British government was reminded of the influence of Paine,"" with the printing of several London editions and refutations, followed by printings in America and several European translations (Keane, 429). Preceded the same year by the Paris edition. With rear advertisement page. This first American edition, printed by Henry Sweitzer for Robert Campbell, was issued along with the John Page Philadelphia editions, and a New York edition: no priority established. Philadelphia printer and bookseller Henry Sweitzer, who often partnered with John Ormrod, was favored by publishers Robert Campbell and Mathew Carey, among others. ESTC W37886. Evans 30948. Gimbel-Paine, 62. Kress B3267. Text generally fresh with light scattered foxing.

Description
Unbound. Very good. This set of 26 French illustrated trade cards features illustrations of bratty children and rude adults. They are printed in color on a gold background. These cards were intended to be used by L. D. Wilbur & Company of Fall River, Massachusetts to advertise his clothing and general merchandise company. J. H. Franklin and Company, a Fall River, Massachusetts, printing firm overprinted the French cards with Wilbur's business information. "L. D. Wilbur & Co. / Clothing and General Furnishings, &c. / 16 South Main St., Fall River, Mass." These charmingly humorous cards are in pristine condition and obviously were never distributed by Wilbur. Several examples include: "Ascension Difficile" ("Difficult Ascent") - One boy stands on a chair to beat another on the head with what appears to be a candlestick as a chamber pot is overturned on the floor "Baignade Imprevue" ("Unexpected Swim') - One boy overturns a huge washtub that had been resting on a table onto another "Grotesques Admis L'exposition" ("Grotesque Exhibition") - A girl picks her nose while out walking with her mother. "Musique Vocale et Instrumentale" ("Vocal and Instrumental Music) - Two boys stand on and bang a piano's keys while shouting and beating a pot with a wooden spoon "Union fait la Force" ("Unity Makes Strength") - Two drunken men cling to each other in an effort not to fall down.." . A complete set of this unusual advertising card series in pristine condition. Individual cards or small groups of two or three in used condition, often with glue or scrapbook remnants on their reverse, occasionally appear on . .

Description
Boston: W.M. Leonard, 1912. First edition. MANUAL FOR HARVARD MEDICAL STUDENTS BY LEGENDARY HARVARD PATHOLOGIST W.T. COUNCILMAN-SIGNED BY HIM. 9 1/2 inches tall hardcover, original green cloth binding, spine gilt, ink inscription front free endpaper to Dr. N.C. Foot ""with the kind regards of W.T. Councilman."" Edges lightly age-toned, otherwise very good+. Four 4x5 inch black & white photomicrographs laid in, with note dated 1913-18 Jan. PREFACE This manual has developed from the Syllabus of Pathology published by Councilman and Mallory in 1904, and is designed with special reference to the teaching of the subject. The work gives the plan which has been followed in teaching pathology in the Harvard Medical School, and which has proven to be successful. Illustrations were purposely omitted in the work. Excellent and accurate as are most of the illustrations in the current textbooks of Pathology, they still, when objective, represent areas carefully selected for the illustration of a point, more commonly being the author's interpretations. It is much better that the student should make his own illustrations from the objects studied. Drawing is a mode of expression too often neglected. It helps enormously in accuracy of observation, and by a drawing the student often can convey his conception of an object more clearly than by writing. Blank leaves are inserted after the various chapters, on which the student should make notes of conditions observed, and illustrate these with original drawings. In this way he will contribute to the creation of a book which will be of value to him, the most valuable portion being his own contribution. WILLIAM THOMAS COUNCILMAN (1854 - 1933) was an American pathologist, remembered for his contribution in a monograph on amoebic dysentery (1891) which described detailed observations of it and its parasite. He is even better known for his work on Yellow Fever. Dr. William Thomas Councilman served as the first pathologist-in-chief at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital. He had arrived in Harvard Medical School earlier in 1892 and was an expert in the study of amebiasis, diphtheria, smallpox, and yellow fever. His vivid morphologic description of changes seen in the liver of yellow fever lives on today as ""Councilman body"".

Description
Philadelphia: Kimber and Sharpless, 1843. A Very Good Hardcover. Very Good/None Issued. A foundational pillar of 19th-century American science, this revised 14th edition captures the transition from colonial land-measurement to modern civil engineering. Complete with its called-for folding plates and technical articles on the theodolite, it is a primary document of the mathematical rigor that built the American infrastructure. This copy, bound in its original mottled calf, is an essential acquisition for any collection focusing on the history of American mathematics or the evolution of surveying technology. KEY FEATURES +++ Visuals: Includes several large folding plates and charts at the rear illustrating geometric principles and surveying projections. +++ Binding: Original full mottled calf with a contrasting leather title label affixed to the spine featuring gilt lettering. +++ Content: A comprehensive course in plane trigonometry and surveying practice, including the use of the theodolite and leveling techniques. +++ Imprint: Published by Kimber and Sharpless, Philadelphia, 1843. +++ Specs: Octavo (8vo); 8.75 inches tall; 152 pages plus charts. CONDITION: The bindings are tight and square with no structural failures to the hinges. The original mottled calf shows moderate shelf handling and expected rubbing to the extremities and board edges. The text block is clean throughout, though characterized by the light, even age-toning typical of mid-century American paper. There is a small area of old damp-staining visible on the front fore-edge, which does not penetrate or affect the legibility of the text. Part of one rear free end page is excised. SCHOLARLY FEATURES +++ Scholarly Influence: Gummere's 'Treatise' was the most widely used surveying manual in the United States for over three decades, influencing the mapping of the American West and the development of the national rail system. +++ Historical Impact: Reflects the mid-19th-century shift toward precision instrumentation, moving beyond the simple compass and chain toward the complex optics of the theodolite. +++ Contextual Analysis: Serves as a primary artifact of the Quaker contribution to American science, specifically through the educational standards established at Haverford. +++ Mathematical Pedigree: John Gummere was among the most eminent mathematicians of the early Republic; his self-taught mastery led to his role as a co-founder of Haverford College. +++ Technical Evolution: This 14th edition is historically significant for its 'Revised and Enlarged' content, specifically the addition of articles on the theodolite and topographic leveling. +++ Folding Plates: Retains the critical folding charts at the rear, which provided the visual and practical geometry required for field application. +++ Institutional Presence: Gummere's works are cornerstones of American scientific bibliography, frequently cited as the standard by which early 19th-century technical education is measured. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE - John Gummere was a self-taught polymath whose contributions to astronomy and mathematics made him a fellow of the American Philosophical Society. His surveying treatise was more than a textbook; it was a manual of expansion, used by land speculators, railroad pioneers, and civic planners during the height of the Manifest Destiny era. This 1843 edition is particularly vital as it documents the 'Revised and Enlarged' state of the text. By adding sections on theodolite work and topography, Kimber and Sharpless ensured Gummere's work remained the gold standard for practitioners even as the technology of the field was being revolutionized by newer, more precise instruments. SUBJECTS: American Mathematics, Civil Engineering History, Surveying, Trigonometry, 19th Century Science, Haverford College, Philadelphia Publishing, Technical Manual, Mathematics, Americana. BIBLIOGRAPHIC REFERENCE: Sabin 29230, Checklist of American Imprints Citation: 43-2244 (Refers specifically to the Kimber and Sharpless 1843 edition).

NED BUNTLINE (March 20, 1821 July 16, 1886). Buntline, whose real name was Edward Zane Carroll Judson Sr., was an American publisher, journalist, and writer.JAMES GORDON BENNETT (1795-1872). Bennett was the publisher of The New York Herald.ALS. 2pg. October 5, 1849. Philadelphia. An autograph letter signed The Avenger addressed to Bennett. The anonymous author stated: Allow me to say that your insertions in The Herald concerning E.Z.C. Judson Esq, fully confirm the opinion that the Public have always had of you, viz: that you are a coward, a rascal and a liar. Mr. Judson and you, have, since the commencement of his Own, been on very unfriendly terms, in consequence of his denouncing you, justly, as an infamous character. And now, as the people have been deceived, as regards the Riot, by such papers as The Herald and The Sun and Mr. Judson confined as a common felon you grasp with eagerness at this most favorably opportunity of venting your spleen on an honest and injured man. And, sir, if you dare to publish another word unfavorable to him (Judson) I, as an American, (and altho I have never seen Mr. Judson) will take the matter in hand, visit New York and punish you myself. The people would not interfere, for they, or the majority of them, are against youIn future, when The Herald is deficient in matter, you will just fill up with something truthful, and not with comments upon the character of Mr. Judson or, believe me I will keep my word at all hazards. On May 10, 1849, there was a riot between immigrants and nativists in Manhattan; approximately two dozen were left dead. Buntline was blamed for the Astor Place Riot because of some handbills he printed ahead of time. The letter has spotting throughout.

Description
New York/Chicago: A.L. Burt Company. Good. (c.1932). Reprint. Hardcover. (no dust jacket) [decent enough reading copy, binding solid, some staining to covers, age-toning to edges of text block, bumping to several corners]. Novel about a woman who remarries following a Reno divorce, and moves with her new hubby to Hooperstown, Ohio. On the basis of her first spouse's having been a movie star, this book has gotten classified as a "Hollywood novel" and included in Anthony Slide's bibliography of the genre -- even though her second marriage has already taken place on the first page of the story, and overall the book's "Hollywood" content, as such, is nil. Essentially everything we learn about the first marriage is told through the woman's reminiscences, scattered throughout the narrative -- which, in fact, seems to be largely concerned with her struggles (if that's the word) to leave that marriage behind, psychologically and emotionally, while simultaneously adjusting to her new life in small-town Ohio (which isn't helped by the fact that she finds it "a place of fearsome and uninteresting recreations"). There's a little narrative jolt (spoiler alert!) about halfway through the book when her movie-star ex is killed in a plane crash, but since the memory of the marriage has already been sort of haunting her, you might say, it doesn't seem to have much effect on the character of her reminiscences. Ms. Bartley was prolific enough to rate an entry (albeit a brief one) in Grant Overton's 1928 book "The Women Who Make Our Novels" (she had already written more than a dozen at that time), which gives the information that she'd become a newspaper reporter at the age of nineteen, and then "served a pretty arduous apprenticeship in the more cheaply priced fiction magazines." She continued to crank out a book or two a year until about 1934, at which point her career (at least as a novelist) seems to have come to an end, although she lived on until 1952. .
