Description
1797. [EHON] Yosa BUSON 与謝蕪村, author; Matsumura GOSHUN松村呉春 [GEKKEI 月渓 ], artist. SHIN HANATSUMI新花摘み. Published In Osaka, c. 1798. 25.7 x 18.4 cm. One volume, complete. Here, Goshun, one of Buson's most illustrious students, has illustrated a collection of wonderful haikai and diary notes by Buson from a humorous work he brushed in the 1780s, here posthumously block-carved in Buson's distinctive style, with a group of literati images by Goshun which are some of the most praised of the genre. Goshun was a master of both literati and Maruyama style, derived from his close relationship with Okyo丸山応挙and Buson. Always in demand as a masterpiece of the genre, very few copies ever come to market. With vintage but replaced covers, a brushed titles label, a tiny bit of worming and very good impressions. A species of the lightly colored version quite like those at the British Museum and UCLA. With the same two page ad laid onto the inner back cover as those copies, so only the first ad page can be read I this one. Reference to the Union Catalogue seems to indicate that this Kansei edition was the first to be cut and printed. Although UCLA claims this version to be a later printing, I see no earlier version listed anywhere, though the postscript by Goshun is dated during Temmei. The UCLA copy had passed through the hands of Sorimachi Shigeo, the greatest bookseller of the Showa era, so perhaps he knew of an earlier printed version.... But there is no sign of it today. Enclosed in a custom clasped chitsu case.

Description
Black & white illus. throughout. [24] leaves, printed on rectos only. Small 4to (210 x 152 mm.), orig. pictorial wrappers. Amsterdam: Cres Publications & Agora Studio, July 1978 [but 1979]. First edition of this scarce bookwork. Conceived by Ulises Carrión (1941-89), it was the "July-Special" edition of Cres, a bi-monthly publication, and produced in an edition of 400 copies. Although it is dated "July 1978" on the upper wrapper, a correction slip in this copy states that it is correctly dated July 1979. "[In Alphabetical Order] consisted of a set of twenty-four black-and-white photographs of a small wooden index card holder with a label saying 'a-z.' In each photograph, some of the cards are placed vertically so that they stand out from the others. They are clearly different each time. The type and size of the card holder suggests that the index cards record personal details. It could be the file of Ulises Carrión's friends, although all the friendships are obviously not considered equal, nor do they all belong to the same social group or cultural scene. The series showed the wide range of possible categories of a single human group that has been sorted in alphabetical order."-Javier Maderuelo, "An Archive Is an Archive Is an Archive Is an Archive," in Guy Schraenen, ed., Dear reader. Don't read. (2016), p. 58. Near fine copy; some minor creasing to the spine, internally pristine. Photographs by John Liggins; layout by Thomas Gravemaker.

Description
Montgomery, Ala.: W. W. Screws, State Printer, 1871. xxx pp. A few mild fox spots, short closed margin tear [no loss]. Bound in modern red cloth with a defunct institution's bookplate. Very Good. This revolutionary Constitution abolishes slavery, proclaims the equality of all before the law, renders all residents citizens of the State of Alabama, and explicitly repudiates the right of secession. After Congress rejected Alabama's 1865 constitution and passage of the Reconstruction Acts in March 1867, Alabama was placed under military government until it passed a new constitution that recognized the rights of African Americans. On November 5, 1867, a constitutional convention was held in Montgomery. This Constitution is the result, the first in the State's history with the participation of African Americans. "It was a remarkable moment, then, when eighteen black delegates took their seats in the Alabama convention. . . Just six years earlier, the city had seen a convention write a constitution for the Confederate States of America." (James F. Hrdlicka: Colonists, Citizens, Constitutions: Creating the American Republic, New York, 2020. Page 168). Echoing the language of the Declaration of Independence, this Constitution states [Article One, Clause 1]: "We Declare: That all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." Clause 2, echoing the soon-to-be ratified Fourteenth Amendment, states: "That all persons resident in this State, born in the United States, or naturalized, or who shall have legally declared their intention to become citizens of the United States, are hereby declared citizens of the State of Alabama, possessing equal civil and political rights and public privileges." Other clauses state that "no form of slavery shall exist in this State" (Clause 35) and that "this State has no right to sever its relations to the Federal Union" (Clause 37). Congress approved this constitution in June 1868. On July 13, 1868 the Alabama legislature ratified the Fourteenth Amendment and Alabama was readmitted to the Union on the same day. Two more constitutions would be drafted and ratified in Alabama following this one: in 1875, marking the end of Reconstruction in the state, and in 1901,Alabama's current constitution. This constitution was originally published by Barrett & Brown in Montgomery in 1867. Owen 880.

As homage to Ray Johnson's mail art network, Leo Fitzpatrick invited a group of young artists to submit their photocopied artworks, for both a publication and an exhibition at OHWOW gallery. "Stuff they were more likely to put on their refrigerator, that's the kind of work I really like - unfinished pieces and things that make people smile that they wouldn't put out in the world as 'serious artists.'" Description
London: Printed, by Assignment of John Marshall, for Darton, Harvey, and Darton, 1816 Fourth edition. Three previous editions were published under the John Marshall imprint (in 1787, 1793, and 1797). The present edition is the first under the Darton, Harvey, and Darton imprint. All previous editions are scarce. Original paper-covered boards with green roan spine lettered in gilt. . Twelvemo. With a copper-engraved frontispiece. Some rubbing to extremities and some foxing and dampstaining throughout. Some light pencil markings on a few pages and three signatures on front pastedown, one dated 1858. Overall a very good, tight copy of an uncommon book. The titular Lydia Lively is an anxious, easily distracted young girl who strives to be patient, optimistic, and quiet after her mother promises to write a log of Lydia's misbehavior each night and read it aloud to the entire family the following day (pp. 12-13). Lydia loves to read books like La Bagatelle and History of Little Ann and Little James (Darton, Harvey, and Darton in 1816), so she is particularly afraid of hearing unflattering stories about herself. By the end of May Day, though, Lydia has become so good and so diligent about her French studies that her mother stops keeping the log. In the conclusion of the story, the author writes that Lydia "escaped falling into bad habits, which, though very easily checked at first, become, after they are long indulged, very difficult to break. I very affectionately recommend this practice to any young persons who desire in earnest to be good," (p. 138).

Blue cloth, title stamped in silver. The first state, with "Walking" for "Waking" on page 80. Light sunning to top edge of cloth. Ownership inscription on front free endpaper. Solid text block. In the publisher's first state dust jacket, $3.95 on the front flap, light rubbing to tips of the spine, shelf wear to both covers, free of any restoration, a bright example. A Death In The Family by James Agee was published posthumously in 1957, two years after the author's death. The novel was incomplete at the time of Agee's passing, and editor David McDowell assembled and prepared the manuscript for publication using drafts and notes left behind. Despite its unfinished state, the book was met with critical acclaim and won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1958.

Description
Milwaukee, Wisconsin: Virginia W. Williams, 1980. Very good +. 11” x 8½”. Stapled wrappers. Pp. 36. Very good plus: the slightest toning and foxing to edges of wrappers; internally fresh. This “Patriotic Issue” of Echo mainly concerned the Black vote and ran key information on local, state and national politicians up for election in 1980. It also held lyrics and sheet music of patriotic songs, a feature on “When Blacks Were Republicans” and one on the Wisconsin Black Republican Council. There was a spotlight with photographic montage of Milwaukee native Dorothy Fisher, “international opera singer,” who was honored with a “coveted Medallion Award” at an event in Milan, “where she has lived for the past 27 years.” Fisher both sang and provided a “moving history of Negro spirituals” at the event. A column on “Career Choices” aimed at local teens was authored by Gertrude Payton, a guidance counselor who went on to establish a scholarship fund to help African American students from Milwaukee attend HBCUs. There was also a feature and great shot of 21-year-old Barbara Joplin, a secretary with the Milwaukee Fire and Police Commission, who solved her “Energy Crisis Problem” by riding a motorcycle. OCLC shows five entities with holdings of Echo over two entries, but only one has this issue, and it is in a bound volume.
