Description
Amsterdam: Chez Jaques Desbordes, 1708. Full Description: PERRAULT, Charles. Histoires ou Contes du Tems Passe. Avec des Moralitez Par le Fils de Monsieur Perreaul. de l'Academie Francois. Amsterdam: Chez Jaques Desbordes, 1708. A very early rare edition of the "Mother Goose" fairy tales of Charles Perrault which is an exact reprint of the Dutch counterfeit published the same year as the first edition of Paris, 1697. Twelvemo (4 5/8 x 2 13/16 inches; 119 x 71 mm). [6], 175, [1, table] pp. With engraved frontispiece, title-page vignette, engraved head-and-tail-pieces and initials, and with eight engraved vignettes, one for each tale. Besides this copy, we could only find one other copy at auction in the past 40 years. This edition features the eight tales found in the first edition, each illustrated with a vignette: Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood, Bluebeard, Puss in Boots, The Fairies, Cinderella, Riquet with the Tuft, and Tom Thumb. Beautifully bound by M. Godillot in full tan morocco. Boards triple-ruled in gilt. Spine elaborately stamped and lettered in gilt. Gilt dentelles. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Top margin occasionally trimmed close, just touching headline. Previous owner's bookplate on front free endpaper. Housed in a morocco lined, marbled paper slipcase. About fine. "The title gives the author as the Son of Monsieur Perrault of the Academie François [sic], as in the 1697 forgery. The dedication to Mademoiselle is signed P. Darmancour. In fact, the participation in the writing of the Tales of Perrault's youngest son, Pierre Perrault Darmancour (1678-1700), is now attested." According to Alde, "This edition is extremely rare; it is missing from the BnF and all French public libraries. Tchemerzine mentions it without having seen it, according to Brunet's supplement, who himself only cites it from Baron Pichon's catalog (1869, I, no. 766: "Rare Edition," a red morocco copy by Trautz-Bauzonnet, acquired for 145 francs by Techener). It was not included in the collection of the Count of Lignerolles, who nevertheless owned eleven editions of the Tales published between 1697 and 1781 (1894, II, nos. 1911-1921)." HBS 69350. $17,500.

Amsterdam: Johannem Janssonium and Elizei Wyerstraet, 1667. AESOP. Full Description: PHAEDRUS. [AESOP]. Phaedri, Augusti Caesaris Liberti, Fabularum Aesopiarum Libri Quinque. Notis perpetuis illustrati, & cum integris aliorum observationibus in lucem editi a Johanne Laurentio Jcto. Amsterdam: Johannem Janssonium and Elizei Wyerstraet, 1667. The first illustrated edition of Phaedrus to be published in the Netherlands and the first and only Laurentius edition. With Octavo (7 x 4 1/2 inches; 180 x 115 mm). [62], 462, [204, Index Vocabulorum] pp. Index Vocabulorum is 102 leaves including one blank. Illustrated with additional engraved title-page by Christian Hagen and 103 half-page vignette engravings in the text. This copy complete with all engravings including the often canceled Brothel illustration on page 276. This edition contains the text of 92 Phaedrus fables with extensive annotations. An earlier edition of of 1596 published by Pierre Pithou contained only 64 fables. Full contemporary vellum. Title in ink manuscript on spine. Yapp edges. Top edges dyed brown. Vellum a bit soiled. Previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown. Some very light dampstaining to a few pages of rear index. Overall an about fine, crisp copy. "Roman fabulist, the first writer to Latinize whole books of fables, producing free versions in iambic metre of Greek prose fables then circulating under the name of Aesop." (Britannica) Phaedrus was "the author (in Latin) of a collection of fables in five books containing some hundred stories, published probably in the thirties of the first century AD. There is also an appendix of another thirty-two fables, probably also by Phaedrus. The collection includes fables proper, a number of anecdotes (e.g. about Aesop, Socrates, and Menander), and defences of the author against detractors. The fables are based on those of Aesop and on beast-stories from other sources which had come to be attributed to Aesop. They are written in verse...and their object is two-fold, to give advice and to entertain. They are generally serious or satirical, dealing with the injustices of life and social and political evils, but occasionally they are light and amusing. In general they express patient resignation...Many of the stories are well known to us, having been handed down...through medieval times to the present day. They include 'The Wolf and the Lamb', 'The Fox and the Sour Grapes' and 'King Log and King Watersnake'" (The Concise Oxford Companion to Classical Literature). Brunet IV: 588. Description
12/10/1895. The iron ore business was made unprofitable by new ore discoveries at Lake Superior, and cheaper rail shipping rates set by Andrew Carnegie and othersWhen people think of Thomas Edison, they think of his great inventions and the huge industries they created. He made phonographs, movies, founded General Electric to provide light, and so much more. But sometimes the mind of Edison fastened on an idea that, though susceptible to important inventions, did not prove commercially viable.About 1885 American industrialists began to worry that the Great Lakes and other sources of high-grade ore were being exhausted. So to take advantage of and address this perceived iron ore shortage, in 1891 Edison launched a mining operation called the New Jersey and Pennsylvania Concentrating Company. He promptly set about securing locations for what he hoped would be likely successful mining operations, He developed a concentrating process, designed rock-crushing technology, and an electromagnetic ore separator to extract low-grade ore from crushed boulders. The final product was a briquette made of powdered, concentrated iron ore. The purpose of the concentration, or magnetic separation, was to reduce the cost of transporting ore to the furnace and to facilitate the smelting. Edison’s specific contributions to the process were the conveyor-belts, the giant roller-grinders, and a large crane to lift the loosened rock into the first huge roller-crusher. The roller-crushers effected a further economy in the use of dynamite and in the labor of blasting. In the early process, dynamite was used to break the rock into smaller particles; later, Edison minimized this expense by developing crushers which could pulverize huge boulders. On the sites were an enormous complex of mines, crushers, separators, and subsidiary buildings. At its highest level of activity, the main plant employed nearly 500 men. Edison was so absorbed in the ore operation that he began to spend much time away from home at the mine. Edison invested about two million dollars of his own money in this project. The product didn't do well commercially, being unable to compete with the high-grade ore being discovered and mined by Lake Superior. Moreover, the Pittsburgh steel barons, Carnegie, Phipps, Frick and Schwab, made sure they were able to ship ore more cheaply than Edison could extract it. In 1899, Edison left the industry altogether and lost his entire investment. but was quoted as saying: “I can at any time get a job at $75.00 a month as a telegrapher, and that will amply take care of all my personal requirements.”One of the leases for mining operations was from the Dover Savings Institution. As its business situation deteriorated, in 1895 Edison decided to terminate the lease and cut his losses.Typed document signed, October 12, 1895, addressed “To the Dover Savings Institution, George Pierson, Trustee,” announcing the termination of the lease. “Please to take notice that it is the intention of the New Jersey & Pennsylvania Concentrating Works to surrender the Mineral Lease made by the Dover Savings Institution to the said Concentrating Works, dated May 24th, 1890, on the land and premises therein described, situate, lying and being in the Township of Randolph in the County of Morris and State of New Jersey. This notice is given by virtue of the provision in said lease for the termination thereof, before the expiration of the term therein mentioned. And you are further notified, that the said New Jersey and Pennsylvania Concentrating Works will not pay any rentals or royalties or be liable to said Dover Savings Institution on any covenant or covenants in said lease contained from and after the period of three months from the date of the service of this notice upon you as one of the trustees of said Dover Savings Institution.” Edison paid Dover the outstanding royalties of $2437.49.Edison turned his attention to movies and phonographs, where he had considerably more luck.

1920. Skolem, Thoralf (1887-1963). Logisch-kombinatorische Untersuchungen über der Erfüllbarkeit und Beweisbarkeit mathematischen Sätze nebst einem Theoreme über dichte Mengen. Offprint from Skrifter utgit av Videnskabsselskapet i Kristiania, I. Matematisk-naturvidenskabelig klasse, 4 (1920). 36pp. 274 x 182 mm. Later wrappers, but very good. First Edition, Offprint Issue. "Many logicians would agree that Skolem and Gödel are the two greatest logicians of the [20th] century" (Wang, p. 119). In the present paper, Skolem "proved the theorem which is now known as the Löwenheim-Skolem theorem. Briefly, this states that if a finite or countable infinite set of sentences formalized within a first order predicate calculus is satisfiable (or, in other terminology, has a model), then the sentences are satisfiable within a countable domain" (Fenstad, p. 102). Another way of phrasing the theorem would be to state that if a theory has a model, then it has a countable model. The Löwenheim-Skolem theorem is one of the foundations of automated theorem proving. "The key work for automated deduction was that of Skolem. He carried out a systematic study of the problem of the existence of an interpretation which will satisfy a given formula of the predicate calculus, or, as one says, whether the given formula is satisfiable" (Davis, p. 9). Skolem was an exception to the rule that mathematicians do their best work when young-his first important paper dates from 1919, when he was thirty-two years old, and he continued to publish significant work until the end of his life. The papers that he published from 1920 on "gave him instant recognition as one of the foremost among logicians" (Fenstad, p. 101). M. A book of practical recipes for confectioners, geared towards trade and not public use. By the author of Frye's Practical Candy Maker, a slimmer volume issued by the author in Chicago in 1884. FIRST EDITION thus, deluxe binding issue; the Prospect Books facsimile of the original 1747 edition. It went through eight editions in her lifetime and was not supplanted as a culinary authority until the work of Isabella Beeton appeared in 1861. Oberlé notes that the author "Severely condemns the extravagance of French cooking." Internally clean and sound. In marbled, paper-covered boards, over three quarter dark blue vellum. Some light rubbing to edges of marbled paper, otherwise near fine.

Riverside, CA: Bo Press Miniature Books, n.d.. Hardcover. Fine. Hardcover. A charming miniature book from this well-known private press. Pat Sweet is noted for her many and varied miniature books and objects. This poem is an Irish ballad written by Robert Dwyer Joyce (1836-1883), a Limerick-born poet. The poem, first published in 1861, tells the story of an Irish rebel from County Wexford who leaves his lover behind to help fight against British colonial rule. The growth of the barley crop every year in the spring is said to symbolize Irish resistance to British oppression. "I sat within a valley green, I sat there with my true love, My sad heart strove the two between, The old love and the new love, - The old for her, the new that made Me think of Ireland dearly, While soft the wind blew down the glade And shook the golden barley." With several illustrations of barley. Printed and bound in Mohawk Superfine paper, with a white dust jacket of the same paper. In fine condition. Measures 2 x 3 inches. Unpaginated [34 pages].
