Description
THEODORE ROOSEVELT (1858-1919). Roosevelt was the Twenty-Sixth President. EMILY TYLER CAROW (1865-1939). Carow was the younger sister of First Lady Edith Kermit Roosevelt and thus the sister-in-law of President Theodore Roosevelt.Archive. 3 pieces. An archive relating to Emily Tyler Carow and her relationship to her Presidential sister and brother-in-law. All three pieces are in very good condition.a)PS. N.d. N.p. A photograph signed Theodore Roosevelt on thick paper stock. Roosevelt is pictured wearing a monocle in this somewhat dark, black-and-white image but the dark signature has great contrast.b)ALS. 4pgs. December 21, [1903]. The White House, Washington. An autograph letter signed Emily Tyler Carow. Writing to a friend, Carow describes sightseeing in Rome and Christmas at the White House. Dear Miss Tuttle, This is just to wish you a particularly happy Christmas and that 1904 will bring about all your most cherished desires. The little Roman paper weight if it were animate could tell you many tales of love hate and ambition for I picked up the various bits of marbles from all sorts of historical spots the palaces of the Caesars, the Stadium, the Baths of Caracalla, the Villa of Hadrian below Tivoli, the shores of Porto dAnzio, the ancient atrium where Nero had his villa, & where his baby daughter lived and if I remember rightly died. These last bits of marble were so washed and worn by the sea, that it was not easy to distinguish them from their plebian companion pebbles, and it was only after they had been cut and polished that I could feel quite sure. My two oldest nephews have come home from school for Christmas and the White House is very gay with childrens voices. May you enjoy as happy a Christmas as I expect to with your sister Edith and her children is the wish of Emily Tyler Carow. There is toning on the second page.c)A black-and-white photograph of Theodore Roosevelt, two women (most likely Edith and Emily), and a young man (probably one of his sons) outside in front of a palm tree.

Description
London: Chapman & Hall, 1865. Turnor, [Christopher] Hatton (1840-1914). Astra castra: Experiments and adventures in the atmosphere. xxiii, 530pp. 35 plates, including chromolithograph frontispiece, photographic print tipped to dedication page, text illustrations. London: Chapman and Hall, 1865. 326 x 252 mm. Original cloth stamped in gilt and blind, some wear at spine and corners, light spotting. Frontispiece starting, minor insect damage to upper margin of title, light foxing, but very good. Presentation Copy, inscribed by the author on the front flyleaf: "Edmund Turner from his affecate brother Hatton-In lieu of many letters that would have been written during the years 1863-64 whilst he was travelling in India, Australia & New Zealand." Bookplate of Turnor's son, Christopher Turnor (1873-1940). First Edition. A vast and remarkable Victorian compendium of aeronautical literature from mythological times to the 1860s. Turnor focused primarily on ballooning and other lighter-than-air flight, although there are a few references to heavier-than-air flight attempts. The work contains 22 portraits of balloonists, and lists the names of the first 500 people to ascend in balloons, giving the dates and places of their first ascents and noting that only ten of them had been killed in ballooning accidents. Turnor presented this copy to his brother, Edmond Turnor (1838-1903), a Conservative Party politician who served in the House of Commons from 1868 to 1880. The copy was later in the library of Hatton Turnor's son, Christopher Turnor, the noted architect and social reformer. .

Description
London, 1876. 1st edition. Precursor of Fleming's work on Penicillin Tyndall, John (1820-93). The optical deportment of the atmosphere in relation to the phenomena of putrefaction and infection. Offprint from Phil. Trans. 166 (1876). [2] [27]-74pp. Text illustrations. 4to. London: Trubner & Co., 1876-77. 295 x 235 mm. Original printed wrappers, very slightly chipped. Light marginal browing, but fine. First Separate Editions. Garrison-Morton 1932 (first paper). Tyndall approached bacteriology by way of physics: during his researches on radiant heat, he had been greatly impressed by the difficulty of removing the particles that were floating in the atmosphere. He later began to focus his attention on these atmospheric particles, publishing these two important memoirs in the Philosophical Transactions; they were later collected, along with other relevant papers and lectures, in his Essays on the Floating-Matter of the Air (1881). The first of these memoirs described his experiments with a hermetically sealed chamber in which the atmospheric dust had been allowed to settle; sterilized infusions protected within this chamber remained uninfected for months, while similar infusions exposed to air all showed bacterial growth. Tyndall pursued these researches further in his second memoir, demonstrating that only a small amount of atmospheric dust was required for contamination, and testing the limits of heat resistance of the infecting bacteria. As bacteria pass through a thermoresistant latent stage as well as an active one, Tyndall devised a method of discontinuous boiling ("Tyndallization") to render infusions completely sterile. Tyndall's researches, along with those of Pasteur, dealt the final blow to the doctrine of spontaneous generation. Tyndall also performed pioneering research leading to antibiotics by observing the bactericidal effect of molds-in particular the selective bacteria-inhibiting effect of Penicillium and the resistance of Ps. pyocyanea to it. His results are discussed in the first offprint listed above. Bulloch, pp. 109-117. .

Description
1868. Very Good. Tait, Peter Guthrie (1831-1901). Autograph letter signed to [Josiah] Latimer Clark (1822-98). Edinburgh, July 27, 1868. 2 pp. 178 x 114 mm. Remains of mounting on blank verso of last page. Very good. From mathematician and physicist Peter Guthrie Tait, professor of natural philosophy at Edinburgh and co-author (with William Thomson) of the classic Treatise on Natural Philosophy (1867), a work that helped to define the modern discipline of physics. Tait's correspondent, Latimer Clark, was an electrical engineer and pioneer in submarine telegraphy; he worked on the Atlantic cable and in 1868 founded the company of Clark, Forde and Taylor, one of the leading submarine cable-laying firms of the nineteenth century. Clark was also an enthusiastic bibliophile, amassing an impressive library of nearly six thousand works on electricity and magnetism documented in the Catalogue of the Wheeler Gift (1909) . Tait's letter, regarding the ordering of some mechanical apparatus from Clark, reads in part as follows: "Not being able to come to London myself, I asked my colleague Prof. Jenkin to report upon the apparatus you offer m. His report is, on the whole, satisfactory-but I am not quite sure about the Willis' Mech. Powers-will the wood stand the climate? If so, I must have them. Will you give me an estimate of the charge for packing (very securely) the whole collection? The expense of insurance and of carriage will be borne by the Madras govt. people . . . "Prof. Jenkin" refers to Fleeming Jenkin (1833-85), professor of engineering at the University of Edinburgh and a collaborator with Clark and William Thomson on the Atlantic cable and other important submarine telegraphy ventures.
