Description
Washington, DC: Privately Published, 1902. First Edition. First Printing. Octavo (20.25cm); vertically-ribbed blue cloth titled in gilt, with a blind-ruled border and decorations on front cover; floral endpapers; [iii],iv-xvi,[3]-372,[2]pp, with portrait frontispiece of the author and 38 plates of illustrations (halftones). Light wear to lower board edges, front endpaper neatly detached but present, with an old, very faint splash mark to upper edge of textblock; Very Good+. A lively account of the life and times of Mifflin Wistar Gibbs (1823-1915), an American businessman, politician, and newspaper publisher from Philadelphia. Shadow and Light recalls his impoverished youth, his early involvement in aiding fugitive slaves while working with William Grant Still, and accompanying Frederick Douglass on his 1849 tour of New York. Gibbs moved west during the Gold Rush in 1850, sensing that there was more money to be made in business than in panning for gold; he and his partner established a prosperous clothing and dry goods business, and a few years after, Gibbs purchased and became the editor of the Mirror of the Times, the local Black antislavery newspaper. He moved to Victoria, British Columbia during the Canadian gold rush, opening an additional business, before returning to the U.S., where he got married, began his legal education, and established himself in Little Rock, Arkansas. "Beginning as a lawyer, he was later appointed to county attorney, and in 1873 he won election as municipal judge of Little Rock, reportedly the first black man in the nation to be so honored" (AANB Vol.3, p.484). He lost the judgeship in 1875, but embarked on a career in local and national politics, ultimately being appointed by Rutherford B. Hayes as register of the U.S. Land Office for the Little Rock District, and eventually as U.S. consul to Tamatave, Madagascar (1898-1901). The remainder of his life was dedicated to causes that would advance "the progress of the race." Uncommon in commerce, with the last copy in the auction record offered in 1962. BLOCKSON 3987; AANB Vol.3, pp.483-485. 85955.

Description
8vo. VII, [1 blank], 126, [2 blank] pp. With a steel-engraved map at the end. It includes printed music for a Bedouin melody and an appendix with Arabic terms and phrases. Contemporary half calf over marbled paper boards (rubbed at extremities, spine worn and with minor losses). On the front flyleaf contemporary ownership entry of John Snellman (1815-1883), Finish senator and relative of renown Johan Vilh. Snellman (1806-1881), statesman and philosopher. A clean copy with occasional toning to pages. First edition, published posthumously in the original Swedish, of the account of Wallin's journey through Arabia, covering the wastelands of the Nafud Desert, where he reached Ha il, then continued southward to Medina and Mecca after returning to Egypt. More precisely, Wallin "moved eastwards from Wadi al-Araba, first touching upon the upper regions of Wadi Sirhan, then on to the oasis of Djuf (Algawf) and crossed the central regions of Shammar, via Djobbah (Gubbi), the Great Nefud (Nufood), and Hail. Of Shammar and its inhabitants he provided the fullest account, unsurpassed by later travellers in its scholarly precision" (Henze). Wallin, a Finnish orientalist, set out for the Middle-East in 1843 under the name of Abd al-Wali and visited Mecca in 1845, several years before Richard Burton. The account was later translated into English ('Narrative of a Journey from Cairo to Medina and Mecca') and published in the "Journal of the Royal Geographical Society" in 1854. The English version, however, does not include the appendix with Arabic terms. The work was probably left incomplete as the indication "fragment" seems to suggest. K.-E. Henriksson, A Wallin Bibliography, in: "Studia orientalia", 17, 1952, p. 13; Howgego (1800-50), W12, p. 627; Henze V, 452.

London: c. 1840s-1880s Two brass printing blocks: one ornamental vertical scroll, and one L-shaped corner piece featuring leaves. Vertical scroll very good with light rubbing, corner piece fair with indentation to lower portion. John Leighton (1822-1912) was one of the most prolific designers of the Victorian Era, having worked also as an illustrator and author. Over 400 bookbinding designs have been attributed to him, spanning the years 1845-1902. Many were made for the London bindery J. & J. Leighton, founded by his father and uncle, John and James Leighton, active c. 1830s-1918. Many of his design elements incorporated coats of arms, inspired by his extensive knowledge of heraldry. One of the blocks from this group bears the stamp of T. Staples. Thomas Staples was a block maker and die-sinker who supplied brass and electrotype blocks to English binderies.. Very Good.
