Description
Augsburg: Simprecht Ruff, 1524. FIRST GERMAN-LANGUAGE EDITION. Hardcover. Fine. Bound in modern boards. A fine copy. First German edition of a book written to quell the growing hysteria around the conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn in the sign of Pisces in February 1524, which was rumored to herald a catastrophic flood. Written by Paul of Middelburg, renowned astrologer, professor of astronomy at the University of Padua, and personal physician to the Duke of Urbino, the book, “A most useful book to read at the present time concerning the Deluge, or the Great Flood: That is, that one will not be caused by the heavens, as some astrologers have clumsily written, and that no one should worry about it… Translated into German to bring consolation to the fearful.”, first appeared in Latin as “Prognosticon ostendens anno 1524 nullum diluvium futurum”(1523). “The Jupiter-Saturn conjunction of February 1524 proved a stimulus to industry—about sixty Renaissance authors penned more than 160 pamphlets… Even a remove of nearly five-hundred years has done little to dampen scholarly interest in this signal episode of the intellectual history of the 1500s.” “In a world view shaped by a natural philosophy much imbued with, and indebted to, astrology, the theory of great conjunctions, which was originally formulated by the Arab scholars Messehala (Masha’allah) and al-Kindi and more fully articulated thereafter by Albumasar (Abu Ma'shar) in his ‘De magnis coniunctionibus’, played a particularly important role… “The most important of these conjunctions involved the more slowly revolving planets—Jupiter and Saturn… Little wonder, then, that the attention of astrologers was drawn to the powerful planetary alignment even many years before it would supposedly take place in the watery house of Pisces in February 1524. But this time not only would Mars, Jupiter and Saturn unite in celestial embrace, they were also to be joined in a far more massive display by the Sun, Mercury and Venus, viz. six of the then seven known planets… “On 20 March 1523 a libel bearing the imperial seal was published in Vienna by the court astrologer Georg Tannstetter, who noted that ‘…this rumour [about the impending flood] has already taken root everywhere, in every sense, creeping into everyone’s mind: it has provoked the wise and the learned to heated debate, and in some it has caused such consternation that they can no longer manage their affairs properly: they sell their lands, fields and other properties, or refuse to purchase those for sale, because they believe it will be easier to convey money up to the mountains than castles and farms. Others still postpone weddings, rescind contracts, refuse holy orders, listlessly tend to their crops while exclaiming (if I understand rightly): what good are riches if in a few years no one will be able to enjoy them?’ “The Spanish astrologer and theologian Pedro Ciruelo, a man of vast erudition who was widely acclaimed in his own time, wrote an analysis in Spanish of the 1524 conjunction that was later translated into Latin, Italian and German. He even advises his readers at a certain point about precautionary measures they might take: ‘those of means should store provisions of flour, oil, wine, firewood, salted beef, dried fish, […] so that if any watery event were to occur in the months hither, everyone shall have their store and can go with it to a safer place.’ For the poor who cannot afford such provisions, Ciruelo recommends that their needs be seen to at public expense. He also suggests that peasants refrain from sowing lowland fields and that shepherds and cowherds drive their animals to highland pastures where forage is abundant… “A pre-eminent figure in the reform of the calendar taken up at the Lateran Council of 1512-1517, Paul of Middelburg, who had long refrained from publishing any predictions, was finally persuaded to a change of heart by the tightening grip of anxiety and fear throughout Italy and published in 1523 his ‘Prognosticon’, which was addressed to Pope Clement VII and refuted any possibility of either a universal deluge or a more local flash-flood.”(Barillà, Drawing Nigh to February 1524: The Spate of Fear, p. 2 ff.).

Description
Palermo: nella stamperia di Francesco Valenza, 1774. SOLE EDITION. Hardcover. Fine. Bound in attractive contemporary patterned pasteboards (corners bumped, minor wear.) The text is in excellent condition. The two folding engravings show the funeral monument and the catafalque. Clean tear (mended, no loss) to first plate. Marginal tear, not affecting image to second plate. The portrait was etched by Giuseppe Garofalo after a drawing by Pietro Giaconia. The 2 foldings plates (see below) were also etched by Garofalo. An unusual funeral book of the late Sicilian Baroque, commemorating funeral rites for the prosperous Sicilian lawyer Giuseppe Maria Jurato (d. 10 October 1712), judge of the Grand Civil Court of Palermo and Prosecutor of the Royal Court. Jurato’s funeral was held in the Baroque-Mannerist Chiesa di Santa Ninfa dei Crociferi, where he was also entombed. Jurato’s desire to have a funeral monument erected to his memory in the church of Santa Ninfa is in keeping with his use of architecture to make public statements about his success and prosperity. Around 1760, Jurato built a palazzo on Via Maqueda only 80 meters from the church in which he is now buried. Now known as Palazzo Jurato-Rudinì, it is one of four that delimit the Baroque piazza known as Quattro Canti. With his Palazzo at one end of the street and his funeral monument at the other, the two "monuments" implied a kind of extended tribute to Jurato's life and achievements. The book contains the text of the funeral oration as well as a brief description of the funeral ceremony. The two large folding plates show the grand catafalque (with Jurato’s body lying in repose upon it) designed by the architect and engineer Nicolò Anito (1715-1809); and the funeral monument, erected in the Church of Santa Ninfa, designed by the prolific Palermo-born architect Giuseppe Venanzio Marvuglia (1729-1814) and sculpted in marble by another Panormito, Filippo Pennino (1755-1801). Jurato was proud to have attained his position of prominence by his own efforts (rather than through hereditary wealth). When his palazzo was finished, Jurato had the Latin inscription "remis et non velis" ("with oars and not with sails") posted over the entrance to mock his aristocratic neighbors. The inscription is a clear allusion to the fact that, unlike the nobles, he was able to achieve great things without the wind of illustrious forebears at his back. (This same theme is underscored in the funeral sermon.) Although the Church of Santa Ninfa was begun in 1601, the façade was built by Giuseppe Venanzio Marvuglia and Ferdinando Lombardo between 1750 and 1760, making it and Jurato’s palazzo contemporary constructions. With his palazzo and tomb at either end of Via Maqueda -one of the two streets that make up Palermo’s main axis- Jurato continues to visually tout his achievements.

HARRY TRUMAN (1884-1972). Harry S. Truman was the Thirty-Third President.PS. 18 x 14. N.d. N.p. A photograph signed Kindest regards Hon. Pat McCarran Harry Truman. The giant photograph shows Truman sitting at his desk with papers in his hands. Truman and McCarran and a very tense relationship. While both were Democrats, they represented opposite ends of the partys ideological spectrum and clashed repeatedly over civil liberties, immigration, and the Cold War. In 1947, McCarran supported and voted for Trumans plan to prevent Greece and Turkey from becoming communist by providing aid. However, when McCarrans request for increased economic aid to Spain and military aid to China was rejected, he broke with Truman. After this incident, McCarran continuously opposed Truman. This photograph has light damage to the upper left corner (but repaired and largely unnoticeable) and is professionally framed.

Description
1639. COKE, Edward. The First Part of the Institutes of the Lawes of England; or, a Commentary upon Littleton. London: G. Kearsly… and G. Robinson, 1775. Large folio (10 by 15 inches), contemporary full reverse calf sympathetically rebacked, retaining original red morocco spine label, raised bands. $2200.Later folio edition of Coke's First Institutes, among the greatest of British legal texts and a fundamental influence on America's founding fathers and American revolutionary principles—the first to be edited and revised by Francis Hargrave, praised by Maitland for its notes. With folding table, in contemporary calf covers.""What Shakespeare has been to literature, what Bacon has been to philosophy, what the translators of the authorized version of the Bible have been to religion, Coke has been to the public and private law of England"" (Reams, Some Makers of English Law, 132). Edward Coke devoted ""years in compiling the works which have secured his immortality… In the Institutes… the tradition of the common law from Bracton and Littleton, whose name Coke's Commentarie—the first part of the Institutes—made famous, firmly established itself as the basis of the constitution of the realm"" (PMM 126). ""The First Institute… was the only part of the Institutes published in the author's lifetime… [With this work] Coke determined the course of the development of our modern law"" (Reams, 141-47). When the Mayflower landed in North America in 1620, Coke's writings were aboard and ultimately laid the foundation for all legal training in the colonies. ""Before the Revolution, Coke's Littleton was, as Jefferson reminded Madison…'the universal elementary textbook of law students'"" (Randall, Thomas Jefferson, 52-3). Jefferson later wrote that Coke's Institutes ""may still be considered as the fundamental code of the English law"" (Sowerby II:1781). First published in 1628. ""Thirteenth Edition"" stated on title page. See Harvard Library Catalogue I: 411-12; Sweet & Maxwell I:449. Owner ink signatures to title page.Light staining and repair wormtrace to outer margin of title page and first few leaves only, text generally quite clean; expert restoration to corners, faint dampstaining to front board. A nicely rebacked, wide-margined folio.

Description
London: Thomas Tegg, Simpkin & Marshall, Griffin & Co., and J. Cumming, 1824. SECOND EDITION IN ENGLISH. With 9 engravings (4 folding) signed J. Shury. Quarter calf and marbled boards, gilt lettering on spine; other than some minor foxing to plates, a beautiful, clean copy. Bookplates the Essex Institute and Arnold Thackray. First edition of Ure’s translation (second complete edition in English). The Berthollets’ work is considered the first modern book on dying techniques and principles, an attempt to “place the ancient craft of dyeing on a scientific basis” (DSB). The Scottish chemist Andrew Ure (1778-1857) added a great deal of supplementary material when he translated the second French edition, including seven engravings not present in the original. Berthollet (1748-1822), originally a physician, became a prominent and inspiring French chemist who succeeded Macquer as inspector of dye-works and director of the Gobelins, a tapestry manufacturer. Berthollet was one of the first to accept Lavoisier’s new theories, and he joined with him in devising the new chemical nomenclature. A close friend of Napolean, he accompanied him to Egypt where he founded the Institut d’Egypt at Cairo. In addition to his introduction of chlorine as a bleaching agent, he is noted for placing the operations of dyeing and bleaching on a scientific basis.
