Very Good +
Description
Paris: Shakespeare and Company, 1922. First edition. Very Good +. One of 750 copies on handmade paper, from the wider first edition limitation of 1,000 copies. Based on Sylvia Beach's records, it has been asserted that, out of the three issues of the first edition, this one was sent out first. This copy marked as number 482. Modern blue half morocco gilt over marbled boards, bookplate of Giles Alexander Esme Gordon to front pastedown. Front free endpaper with some marginal restoration, a few small unrestored closed tears to preliminary leaves, a little occasional foxing, a few gatherings a little roughly opened. Housed in a custom morocco-backed clamshell case. A Very Good+ copy. Arguably the key text of the Modernist movement. "Joyce, not to mince words, is Ireland's Shakespeare, its Goethe, its Racine, its Tolstoy" (John Sutherland). The book also proved to be a major test case for laws of freedom of expression. "Forced underground by censors, this was a cryptoclassic already before it was read, a subversive colossus" (Sherry). Provenance: Giles Gordon was a literary agent and writer, working for publishers Secker & Warburg and Gollancz (the latter as Editorial Director) before representing writers such as Peter Ackroyd and Vikram Seth. Slocum and Cahoon A17. (7586). Very Good +.

Description
1927. CHERNIKHOV, Y.G. Iskusstvo nachertania [The Art of Graphic Representation]. 77, [3] pp., with black & white illustration throughout. 8vo, 170 x 130 mm, bound in publisher's white wrappers, in a new green cloth folding box. [Leningrad]: Knigoizdate'stvo Akademii khudozhetsv, [1927]. First edition of Yakov Chernikhov's extremely rare first book. Chernikhov (1889-1951) was an artistic visionary, best known for his elaborate architectural fantasies in his later works. The present book is an instructional for neophyte art students encouraging them to depict beauty and movement through abstract representations. Although a considerably more humble publication than his subsequent books, its fragile format has rendered it quite scarce. Neat ink ownership inscription on the cover and title page dated 1930. Spine a little worn, a near fine copy. Not listed on OCLC.

Description
29/04/1968. Typed Letter Signed, Hollywood, California, April 29, 1968, to pianist Eugene Istomin. “If that good fortune should befall us (of having Senator McCarthy in the White House) I promise to write the trio. Please give my non-political best wishes to Isaac Stern (I hope he is in better health now), Leonard Rose, and take the same for yourself.” Particularly interesting because Eugene George Istomin formed the Istomin-Stern-Rose Trio with Isaac Stern and Leonard Rose, and made many recordings, particularly of music by Beethoven, Brahms and Schubert. He won a Grammy Award in 1970 with the Istomin-Stern-Rose Trio for their recordings of Beethoven.
