Description
1953. Eckert, J. Presper. Publication form. Checking circuits and diagnostic routines. Dittoed typescript, stapled. N.p., March 24, 1953. 13 sheets. 280 x 217 mm. Fine. Dittoed typescript of a paper published in the IRE Convention Record. Part 7-Electronic Computers. March 23-26, 1953. The paper describes the types of faults that can occur in a computing system and how to check it to see if it is working properly; it also compares the advantages and disadvantages of internal checking circuits versus external diagnostic programs. A brief history of checking and diagnostic procedures is included from the time of the differential analyzers through ENIAC, BINAC, and finally to UNIVAC; this may be the only work on this subject. Eckert was at this time the director of engineering at the Eckert-Mauchly Division of Remington Rand. Origins of Cyberspace 1195.

Description
Willimantic [CT]: Printed at the Journal Office, 1850. Broadside, 10.5" x 17.5". Text and illustrations printed within an ornamental border. Beneath caption title are woodcut illustrations of two frogs seated on rocks, followed by a historical "Introduction," and the words to the song in three columns. A few small fox spots, Very Good. The Introduction describes a dark dismal night in July of 1756. The inhabitants of Windham were awakened by a loud noise which seemed to be yells of "infuriated Indians." They also thought they heard the names of Col. Dyer and Elderkin shouted out, "two eminent lawyers, and this increased their general terror." Several townspeople thought something supernatural was happening; they dropped to their knees to pray, while some braver individuals took guns and went to face the attacking foes. By morning the noises had died down. Finding no Indians, the brave men headed home. It was later discovered that the mill-pond outside the village had become nearly dry, causing the large number of bullfrogs to fight "a pitched battle on the sides of the ditch" for what little water remained. This was the great battle that had caused the frightening noises which the townspeople mistook for Indians. The melee resulted in the death of "several thousand" frogs. "Now Lawyers, Parsons, Bullfrogs, all/ I bid you each farewell;/ And unto you I loudly call/ A better tale to tell." OCLC records several different printings of this broadside poem. Brown University suggests an 1840 publication date and attributes authorship to one William L. Weaver [1816-1867]; the New York Public Library weighs in with a suggested publication date of the 1850s and an attribution to Stephen and Ebenezer Tilden. OCLC 22989345 [1- Brown], 44404878 [1- NYPL] as of June 2023. Other printings also issued.

Very Good+
Description
New York/London: D. Appleton-Century Company. Very Good+. 1937. First American Edition. Hardcover. (lacking the original dust jacket, but encased in a well-made "Colorcopy" reproduction of same; see 2nd image posted with this listing, and see Notes for further explanation) [nice copy with only minimal shelfwear, but apparently once owned by one of those fiends who never heard of a bookmark, as about a dozen pages or so have short diagonal creases at the upper corners where they were once folded down as place-markers; a more recent owner has written his name, the date & place of purchase, and a brief note at the top of the front endpaper]. Mystery novel by an Australian writer who worked extensively in radio, the second of four mysteries he penned about one Jeffery Blackburn, a "scientist [and] man-about-town, unofficially connected with Scotland Yard" (did such people actually exist?), who here gets involved in solving a series of murders that takes place in a rural English household. The hallmark of the killings is that the victims received, just prior to their demise, a carved figure suggestive of black magic or ancient sorcery -- the "Mannikins of Death," as it were. The Blackburn character was also featured in a radio serial in the late 1930s, sometimes teamed with his wife Elizabeth, who does not appear in this book. NOTE again that this book bears a "Colorcopy" reproduction of the original dust jacket, to serve the dual purpose of protecting the book from further wear and enhancing its appearance on the shelf; its presence has not been factored in to our pricing. (A "Colorcopy" jacket, as distinct from a facsimile jacket, is a color print of a raw (unrestored) scan of an original jacket, which displays whatever flaws or blemishes were present on the original.) .
