Description
[Baltimore]: Reported and Published by The Baltimore Gazette, 1872. [2], 172pp. Stitched. Original printed wrappers [closed tear to the front wrap, not affecting printing; wraps lightly dusted; wrapper spine worn, with rear wrap detaching]. Inner front wrapper advertises Baltimore's Howard Hotel; rear wrapper advertises the Baltimore Gazette, "A Well-Known Conservative Journal." Text clean and bright. Ownership signature on front wrap of "Capt. A.B. Beers." Very Good. Mrs. Wharton was acquitted, after a 42-day trial, of poisoning General W.S. Ketchum, to whom she owed $2600. The jury "heard nothing of the sudden death of Mrs. Wharton's son the year before during a visit to her and her collection of the policies on his life. Nor did they hear that another financial adviser to this estimable lady, a Mr. Van Ness, had nearly perished in her household shortly before the arrival of the General. It is not surprising that the New York Sun dubbed her 'the Baltimore Borgia.' There was a spate of pamphlets after the trial by the 'expert' witnesses belittling each others' judgments and qualifications and generally expressing that contrariety of opinion so bewildering to laymen" [McDade]. William Scott Ketchum [1813-1871], a West Point graduate, served in the Seminole Wars; the Civil War commanding Fort Dalles in Oregon and protecting settlers from Indian raids. He achieved the rank of Brigadier General of Volunteers in 1862 and was sent to Washington, D.C., for inspection and recruiting duties. After the War he worked in the Adjutant General's office, retiring six months before his suspicious death. Capt. A.B. Beers was probably Alfred Bishop Beers [1845-1920], a Connecticut native who served as Captain with the 6th Connecticut Volunteers during the Civil War. He was admitted to the Bridgeport bar in 1871, was clerk of the Bridgeport City Court from 1873-1875, Assistant City Attorney in 1876, and Judge of the Bridgeport City Court from 1877-1893. FIRST EDITION. McDade 1076. II Harv. Law Cat. 1224.

Very good; some spotting and toning; modest chafing at the joints.
Description
Paris: Goeury, 1815. First Edition. Contemporary full green dyed calf with blind stamped roll and broad gilt rule; elaborate gilt spine panels with raised bands.. Very good; some spotting and toning; modest chafing at the joints.. 4to, [2], 135 pp. + large folding engraved plate. Lamande, one of the finest French engineers of the early 19th century, was responsible for a number of innovative bridge designs, e.g., the multi-span cast iron Austerlitz Bridge in Paris completed in 1806 - the earliest such bridge in France. The innovation at Rouen was the foundation of the bridge. The pier foundations were constructed on timber piles that were closely set within a caisson and then filled with concrete (béton). This method was specific to the Rouen Bridge because the river ran deep and the current was strong. The principle was later used by Vicat on his notable Souillac Bridge. An important engineering work. Bound in an unusually elaborate manner (presentation?) for such books. Absent from Roberts; see Peters, Transitions in Engineering ...., p. 190, for a discussion of the Austerlitz Bridge.

Description
Geneseo, New York, 1973. Approximately 18 x 24 inches. Slightly toned; near fine. Large newspaper advertisement for “Cultural Experience Weekend” at State University of New York, Geneseo, organized by the Activities Commission and Kuumba Weusi Watu, presumably student interest groups. Speakers include Dr. Charles Hurst, then President of Malcom X College in Chicago, and Geneseo student Maurice Odine, who would become a communications scholar and consultant to the United Nations. Performers include legendary soul-funk groups Kool and the Gang and The Isley Brothers and jazz artist Roy Ayers, alongside the Rochester-based student dance troupe Bottom of the Bucket, But…, which had just finished a tour of New York State prisons. The Geneseo student newspaper Lamron described Bottom of the Bucket’s performance as “a dance that celebrates the cultural heritage of the Black man. African dance, theatre pieces that relate to societal problems, and music, make up their program.” [1] [1] Scott Clugstone, “To Each His Art,” Geneseo Lamron, October 19, 1973, 9.

Description
New York: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich Publishers, 1975 First edition, first printing. Publisher's orange cloth-backed yellow paper-covered boards, lettered in black and white, and black endpapers; in the original black dust jacket designed by Herb Lubalin, with a photograph of the author by Philippe Halsman to the front panel, lettered in white, yellow, and black. Near fine book, with light toning to board edges and paper clip residue to top edge of front board; very good or better unclipped dust jacket, with minimal wear to edges, and two paper clip indentations and creasing to top of front panel. With two laid-in promotional pages of "Sayings of Andy Warhol." Overall, a crisp copy of this abstract work. The Philosophy of Andy Warhol is Warhol's second commercially published book, created after he had been established as a major 20th century artist and international celebrity. Although it was professionally published, The Philosophy of Andy Warhol is only marginally more serious than his art books; the text is abstract, more a collection of scattered reflections and thoughts than a cohesive narrative. It covers a variety of subjects, including Warhol's thoughts on his childhood, his life as a celebrity, art, New York, life, and love. The Philosophy of Andy Warhol was largely ghostwritten by Warhol's secretary Pat Hackett, to whom the book is dedicated; in his subsequent commercial publications, Warhol included Hackett as a co-author.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

Description
London/New York/Toronto: Longmans, Green and Co.. Fair. 1929. First Edition. Hardcover. (no dust jacket) [a reading/reference copy only; a well-worn book, hinges cracked but holding, slight exposure of boards at several corners, some staining to the first few pages; an ex-library book (rental library?), with the jacket blurb affixed to the front pastedown, the remnants of a removed circulation label on the front endpaper, and a pocket with circulation card on the rear pastedown]. Novel about a middle-aged Jewish lawyer in an unnamed American city (the only clue we're given is that it's next to one of the Great Lakes), whose "family has been rooted in an American community" for generations, and who "has been married for twenty years to a gentile, and [whose] two children are of the Protestant American world." In the course of the novel, triggered by a near-tragedy in his family, he gradually has his eyes opened to societal prejudice against Jews, and becomes involved in several cases -- a Jewish student denied entrance to a university, a Jewish contractor who's in a dispute with the city over his work on a bridge, and a Jewish woman seeking a divorce from her Gentile husband -- that compel him to put his Jewish heritage front and center. Despite the fact that it incorporates a lot of controversial themes, this book doesn't seem to have been much discussed (if at all) by scholars of Jewish-American literature, nor was it given much notice upon its original publication: the New York Times didn't review it, although it garnered some praise in the Jewish-American press, including a particuarly lengthy and laudatory notice in the Brooklyn Daily Times. (Hanna (3653) summarizes it rather blandly as "problems of an American Jew married to a Gentile.") It was apparently the only novel by this American-born author (1895-1976), who was more at home as a biographer of various figures in English and European history (Queen Elizabeth I, Mary Tudor, Catherine de Medici, Sir Walter Raleigh, etc.). He eventually ended up in England as a literary advisor and editor, where he secured a small (and not particularly honorable) place in literary history by declining to help J.R.R. Tolkien secure a publisher for "The Lord of the Rings," which Waldman had thought "too long." .
