Description
Stunning UNCORRECTED PROOF COPY in proof-only pictorial dust jacket of John Lennon's highly collectible book. Highly scarce. Printed sheets, sewn, with black endpapers, in this rarely seen dust jacket. Profusely illustrated with Lennon's idiosyncratic drawings. The most obvious and important difference between this proof and the trade edition is the presence of a dust jacket. The published version, itself scarcely seen in the first edition, came with photographic covers but without any dust jacket; the proof was released with one. This proof jacket has the same design as the hard cover but carries an exclusive blurb to the front flap and publication details to rear flap. Within the book itself a number of significant changes occur, primarily concerning the color. In the trade version the two colors, brown and green, are used within the text as well as for the illustrations. These colors vary. In the proof the brown is much paler; the green less olive and more mint in shade. The most noticeable feature though, is the presence of two large blocks of color within the proof that were completely omitted in the trade version. These are: pp. 10-11 has a large green floor. When published, this became a white floor; and on the final page, THE END has a presumably grassy hillside which was eliminated in the published version. A beautiful, glistening copy. Enormously collectible.

Description
1814. THACKARA, James. Thackara's Drawing Book for the Amusement and Instruction of Young Ladies & Gentlemen in the Pleasing and Elegant Art of Drawing. [4] pp., [54] leaves of engraved plates. Small 4to, 205 x 163 mm., contemporary sheep-backed plain boards, in a recent custom quarter morocco slipcase. Philadelphia: James Thackara & Son Engravers, 1814. An extremely rare early American drawing manual. While somewhat stained and browned throughout, and with the binding in poor shape, it is nonetheless a serviceable copy. There are 4 copies in the auction records, 1972, 1969, 1921 and 1908, all ascribed with a publication date of 1796. The copies on OCLC have been ascribed dates 1798, 1814 and 1816. OCLC lists AAS, Michigan, LC and JCB.
