Description
El Reno, Ok: Baker Hickman Music Co, 1890. Very good.. Three cabinet card photographs, each 4.25 x 6.5 inches on slightly larger mounts, two with ink stamp on verso reading "Sold by Baker Hickman Music Co. El Reno, Okla." Minor edge wear, a few small bumps, scattered minor soiling. Three rare images featuring hundreds of hopefuls preparing to participate in the Oklahoma Land Rush of 1889. The images were taken in El Reno, Oklahoma, often referred to as the "Home of the Land Rush." Each of the images are filled with men in the streets, on the sidewalks, on top of trains near the El Reno depot, standing under tents, and in horse-drawn wagons. One of the images features a number of tents set up in the streets of El Reno, one of which belongs to Crow & Jones who sport a sign reading, "Filing Papers Made Here." Many of the businesses on this main strip in El Reno can be seen in the background, including the meat market, Miller's Drugs, Cook & Shriver Furniture and Carpets, among others. It appears that all three photographs were taken from the roof of a train car. "On April 22, 1889, the area's unassigned lands were opened up for settlement, which quickly became known as the great Oklahoma land run. When the signal was given along the outer boundaries, the Fort Reno soldiers were assigned to keep order among the many rushing pioneers flooding the area. No sooner was the land opened for settlement when the Rock Island Railroad began to build a line from Caldwell, Kansas, to the Canadian River's south bank. Near Fort Reno, a settlement had sprung up called Reno City, which quickly decided to relocate nearer the railroad. Buildings, pioneers, and businesses wasted no time uprooting and moving the entire town, which they called El Reno. In January 1890, the first train arrived in the community, which quickly became a rail center for the productive wheat harvests of Canadian County. In March of 1890, El Reno has named the county seat" - Legends of America website.

Description
Allentaun: Blumer Druckerei, 1830. Folio broadside: 335 x 215 mm., [13 ¼ x 8 ½ inches]. Printed in two columns on blue paper; heavily stained, some tears at folds; expert paper repairs to folds. Rare broadside issued as part of a confirmation ceremony presided over by Andrew Zeller (1755-1839), one of the early bishops of the United Brethren Church in America. Following the example of the Methodists, this German language ministry of the UBC, used revivals, camp meetings and song as a way of ministering to its German American Evangelical congregation. The 'Confirmation Song', comprised of three hymns, was part of the traditional ceremony celebrating the congregant's admission to full membership in the church. The song is attributed to Heinrich Albert (1604-1651) and was used by Bach in his vocal works. The broadside is printed by Alexander Blumer, son of the Reformed pastor Abraham Blumer. He began printing in the late 1820's and his company, under a number of partnerships lasted until 1856. This broadside is identified by Herman Wellenreuther and dated ca. 1830. Another example of the Confirmations =Lieder printed in 1850 by Blumer is described and illustrated by Don Yoder in his book on Pennsylvania broadsides. It is also printed on blue paper. This broadside is not cited in OCLC and appears not to be in the collections of the Library Company or the American Antiquarian Society. Herman Wellenreuther, Citizens in a Strange Land, Penn State University Press, 2013, note 7, p. 299. Stephen Nolt, Foreigners in their Own Land, Penn State University Press, 2002, pp. 50-51. Long Island City, N.Y.: Bomart Music Publications [PN bmp I/1], 1949. Folio. Stapled. Original publisher's light gray wrappers printed in blue. 1f. (blank), 2ff. (title, texts, notes), 23, [3] (blank) pp. Narrator's text in English with some German; preliminaries with full French and German text. Chorus in transliterated Hebrew. Series statement to lower wrapper: International Contemporary Series. From the collection of noted musicologist Stanely Boorman, with his signature to front flyleaf and occasional annotations in pencil. Wrappers lightly worn and browned; small price stamp to upper outer corner of upper. First Edition. Rufer (E), pp. 73-74. GA B/19, pp. 63-64. "The plot of the "Survivor from Warsaw," which Schönberg wrote himself, describes a scene, typical of national socialism's organized terror, of roll-call selection, where the human inventory was inspected, and those sentenced to death were pulled from the prisoners' ranks; in this way, it was possibly to portray the significant patterns of everyday life in the concentration camps. Schönberg's literary method of obscuring the Warsaw Ghetto - the symbolic location - by focusing on a locationally indefinite episode along the continuum of a larger historical process, entails that it remains factually undefined, as well. It is not, however, the authenticity of the details, but rather the interpretation thereof that is important for the reading and understanding of the terror of extermination as the signature of modern social history: "Now, what the text of the Survivor means to me: it means at first a warning to all Jews, never to forget what has been done to us, never to forget that even people who did not do it themselves, agreed with them and many of them found it necessary to treat us this way. We should never forget this, even such things have not been done in the manner in which I describe in the Survivor. This does not matter. The main thing is, that I saw it in my imagination." (Letter to Kurt List, November 1st, 1948)" Therese Muxeneder © Arnold Schönberg Center.

Description
29 pp. 8vo (206 x 132 mm.), disbound, stitched as issued. Paris: Henry & Olivier, 1815. The scarce catalogue of an auction directed by Bon-Thomas Henry (1766-1836), first a painter, then a respected dealer and tasteful collector. The supposed consigner “La Baronne de V***ez,” was very probably fictitious. This sale, consisting mostly of Northern pictures, offered 76 lots of paintings and 11 lots of engraved stones. Henry has contributed informative descriptions for most of the pictures. Attributed here to P. de Hooch, lot 36, now at the Frick, is today credited to Hendrik van der Burgh. Nice copy, a little foxed. Stamp of the Bibliothèque Heim on upper wrapper. ❧ Lugt 8764. Oxford Art online (Henry)–“He studied under Charles Landon and Jean-Baptiste Regnault. In 1793 he began to deal in pictures and until 1812 spent part of his time travelling abroad (mainly in Italy) to increase his knowledge of art. In October 1816 he was appointed Commissaire-expert des Musées Royaux, a post he held until his death. Between 1810 and 1830 he assembled an eclectic collection, purchasing either privately or at sales, among them the posthumous sales (1826 and 1827) of Vivant Denon. His tastes in Italian art ranged from the work of Fra Angelico to that of the 17th-century Bolognese masters…In 1834 Henry offered a large part of his collection to the town of Cherbourg, and on 29 July 1835 a museum to house his works was opened on the second floor of the Hôtel de Ville; it was later named the Musée Thomas-Henry.”.
