Description
France (probably Rouen), second half of 15th century. 162 x 117 mm. (6 3/8 x 4 5/8"). Single column, 17 ruled lines, text in a bâtarde hand. Text in gold, blue, and red, "KL" in scrolling white letters on a gold ground with small blue and red blossoms, both sides with panel border of acanthus, flowers, small ink dots, and gold bezants, WITH TWO SMALL MINIATURES showing the labor of the month (Threshing) on recto, and the zodiac sign (Virgo) on verso. ◆Small wrinkle in lower margin just touching the lower edge of the miniatures, trivial smudging, but IN VERY FINE CONDITION, the vellum especially clean and bright, the paint quite rich, and the miniatures extremely well preserved. With clean, white vellum, small but appealing miniatures, and attractive lettering and decoration, this is a desirable example of a calendar leaf from a high-quality Book of Hours likely made in Rouen. According to Roger Wieck, far fewer than half the Books of Hours of the period contain illustrated calendars, "even in manuscripts with otherwise lavish cycles of miniatures"; when they do appear, they are invariably charming, as is the case here. In the lower margin of the recto is a small miniature depicting the typical labor for August, "Threshing," in which a young layman brings down his grain flail (two hinged pieces of wood, the longer one called a helve, and the other a beater, joined by a thong) in an effort to separate the grain, while neatly stacked unprocessed clumps of straw appear just behind it. On the verso we see a representation of Virgo as a young woman holding, appropriately, a long sheaf of grain in her hand. While most of the feast days that appear in the calendar are typical for the period, the inclusion of St. Sauveur (i.e. Transfiguratio Domini) on 6 August is characteristic of a calendar for the use of Rouen, suggesting that the parent manuscript may have been produced in that place or the region around it..

Description
Paris: Éditions Zoé Cristiani, 1990. First edition. Octavo (255 × 218 mm). Loose leaves in a folded printed cover, housed in a gray cloth publisher's folder with flaps and closing ties. This is one of only 80 copies (no. 35), each signed by both the author, Scottish poet Kenneth White, and Chinese-French artist Zao Wou-Ki. All copies feature a full-page aquatint in black, printed by Lacourière, Paris. This unique collaboration—Zao Wou-Ki's only known project with White—was completed in March 1990. Though the two had known each other earlier, White described initially resisting such collaborations, only changing his mind after a 1985 journey through northern Japan, following in the footsteps of 17th-century haiku master Basho. Inspired, he wrote to Zao Wou-Ki suggesting a book based on his haikus, emphasizing how the artist's gestural language could bring the poetry to life.References: Zao Wou-Ki and the Poets, pp. 184–185; Chicha and Minssieux-Chamonard, p. 141; Agerup 345.

Description
New York: Jonathan Cape and Harrison Smith, 1930. 3rd Printing. Hardcover. Very good +. Octavo size, 150 pp., signed by Lynd Ward. American artist Lynd Ward (1905-1985) demonstrates his masterful storytelling in "God's Man", a wordless novel made with wood engravings which depicts a man's pact with the devil in exchange for a magical paintbrush which enabled him to gain fame as an artist; it progresses through 139 engraved woodblocks to show his downfall, temporary redemption, and ultimate payment of the price for the deal he made. Ward's wood engravings are rich in detail and emotion, and the story has a rhythm as the reader follows the character through interactions with dark, forbidding characters and uncaring urban streets; "God's Man" was the first American wordless novel, and Ward's work is often seen as a precursor to the modern graphic novel in its ability to convey character and feeling through the use of image alone. ___DESCRIPTION: Decorated paper over boards with a black cloth shelfback, the front and back with an inset illustration by Ward, paper spine label with the publisher's device, top edge stained black, fore- and bottom edges rough-cut, black endpapers, signed by Lynd Ward on the half-title page in black ink, small vignette and decorations on the title page, stated third printing on the copyright page of January, 1930 (two months following the first printing), Ward's wood engravings on the recto only of each page telling the story; octavo size (8.25" by 6"), unpaginated, [i-vi] being the preliminary pages followed by 144 leaves of wood engravings. ___CONDITION: A bit better than very good overall, the text block strong and square with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; overall wear to the paper boards, spine label sunned and slightly worn, the final illustration with a shallow vertical crease (only visible on the verso, not affecting the illustration), and residue from an older label (bookseller's ticket?) at the bottom left corner of the rear pastedown; near fine internally with a somewhat worn binding, nicely signed by Lynd Ward. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Description
Chamberlain, S.D.: December 19, 1891. Very good.. 6pp. on octavo leaves. From a gummed pad of letterhead paper, with leaves joined at top edge. Previously folded, light tanning. Accomplished in hasty, but legible scrawl. An amusing and spirited letter from George R. Owen, the editor of the Chamberlain, South Dakota, newspapers to his recently visited cousin in New York, composed on his attractive, personal letterhead. The missive begins by announcing the author's safe return, declaiming his happiness to be back in the South Dakota climate (!!), and relating the discovery of a new artesian water source, which, "will irrigate hundreds of acres and means sixty bushels of wheat per acre, DEAD SURE." He then moves on to discussing his own newspaper and printing business, in which he is transferring much of his interests from papers to the production of blank books -- "Am now going to put about $4000 more into the blank printing business exclusively. It is a big business -- THOUSANDS of dollars worth of them used in a year...." Of course, he cannot raise the cash locally ("I have the reputation here of being a 'rustler'") and asks his relative to loan him the $1500 or $2000 extra he needs, while also blaming the tight cash market on heavy local investment in the construction of a Black Hills railroad bridge. The letterhead, which takes up nearly half of these smallish sheets comprises a map of South Dakota with Chamberlain in bold, and the titles of the newspapers of which Owen was editor in varied fonts. An enjoyable snapshot of late 19th-century wheeling and dealing in rural South Dakota.

Description
Voyageur Press, A Town Square Book, (2003). Quarto, hardcover (slick, full-color photo. illus. boards), [160] pp. Fine (As New) in a Fine dust jacket. From dust jacket: The guitar. It is without doubt the musical instrument that played the soundtrack to the twentieth century. It is a symbol of youth, freedom, rebellion. Playing uitar -- however badly -- is as much a part of the American experience as that first crush or first car. Such memories are what this book is about. This Old Guitar is a treasury of short stories, essays, tall tales, and reminiscences, all devoted to the guitar and the special role it plays in our lives. The authors of the pieces collected in this anthology come from a wide range of backgrounds: some are music journalists and historians; some are regular folk with a story to share about their favorite guitar. Rounding out the selection are recollections from guitar heroes such as Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Muddy Waters, Eddie Van Halen, Les Paul, T-Bone Walker, Dicky Betts, B. B. King, Willie Nelson, and more. These stories are complemented by an eye-pleasing mix of artwork, including black-and-white historical photos, current color shots of collectible guitars, posters, ads, and more. If you still remember that first guitar, still play guitar, still turn your amp to “10”, or still dream guitars, then this book is for you.
