Bound in contemporary limp vellum with title inked on spine, later endpapers, leaf 103 with repaired marginal tear. Some worming and staining to binding, some spotting, occasional foxing; several early ownership inscriptions scored on title; generally very good.Scarce first complete edition (with 19 woodcuts) of the second printed work devoted to the customs of the American Indians illustrated from life. This edition is augmented with a section on the Canary Islands and an extra plate. Benzoni's is one of the earliest accounts of the European colonial establishment in America by a writer who was not Spanish, and the spirited woodcuts (all but one of which show Native Americans) were among the first to give Europeans images of Indians and their activities. Their ethnographic value has long been acknowledged, and they were the source for the De Bry engravings (see Item X).The historical and ethical value of the work is also considerable: "Along with Las Casas' Brevissima relación de la destruyción de las Indias, the Historia is considered one of the two foundation stones of the Black Legend of Spanish cruelty to the Indian."Benzoni (b. 1519), a native of Milan, came to the Caribbean as a young man in 1541 and visited the Greater Antilles, the Spanish Main, and Central America, thereafter sailing from Panama to Peru.*Adams B 688; Sabin 4791; Sturtevant, "First Visual Images of Native America," and Keen in First Images of America I, 417-54 & 108; Penrose, Travel and Discovery in the Renaissance, p. 299.

A scarce auction catalogue issued by the expert Alexis Nicolas Pérignon (1785-1864), who presided over a number of important sales — Constantin, Denon, J.L. David — in the 1810s and 1820s. He was also appointed the commissaire-expert des Musées Royaux, a prestigious title once held by the leading dealer and taste-maker Jean Baptiste Pierre Lebrun (1748-1813). Dufresne, the consignor to this sale, was a wealthy stockbroker. This catalogue describes 65 lots, including paintings by Bega, N. Berghem, Brauwer, B. Breenbergh, Dou, Dujardin, Metsu, A. & I. van Ostade, Steen, Teniers, Ph. & P. Wouwerman, etc. Some of the entries have extensive notes, and measurements are provided for most pictures. A nice copy. Sporadic and inoffensive foxing, and the half-title is a bit soiled. From Preliminary Explanation: The Book of Jasher is one of the long-lost, and long sought for, sacred books which should have been included among the other books of the Bible but which was not because the original manuscript could not be located. In addition to the two references to the Book of Jasher that will be found in the other books of the Bible there are historical references to this lost manuscript and it is only natural that in recent centuries a great many stories should have been invented purporting to tell how and why the Book of Jasher became lost, hidden, or suppressed. In order that some of the mystery regarding the Book of Jasher might be removed, and, furthermore, for the benefit of those students of the Bible who sincerely desire to read another record of the events that are presented in the Old Testament, we have thought it well to reporduce the Book of Jasher in its original text as given to the world by the man who claims to have found it and prserved it. In order that our reproduction of this rare book should be without error or change, we have resorted to the very elaborate, complicated, and costly method of photographing each and every page of the Book of Jasher as issued by Alcuin and reproduce it in special paper by the rotogravure process. This, therefore, gives us a truly photographic reproduction of each page of the original book by Alcuin. We feel sure, therefore, that our readers will enjoy these reproductions beginning with the original title page of the book and noting not only the interesting style of typography and arrangement of matter but the original and excellent language used by Alcuin. The pages as they appear in this book have not been reduced in size or altered in any manner, and only the cover of the book, the first title page, and this explanation are original with us. Attention is called to the many uniqe phrases found in the early chapters of the Book of Genesis in regard to the creation of the universe and of man and woman.
