Near fine in a near fine jacket.
Description
New York: Harper & Row, 1979. First printing. Near fine in a near fine jacket.. Rare inscribed first edition of the ex-Marine's brief and brutal semi-autobiographical novel - basis for Stanley Kubrick's FULL METAL JACKET. Hasford joined the Marine Corps in 1966, shortly after having "refused to graduate from high school" because he "didn't want to validate what they were doing." Assigned to a North Carolina base as a military journalist, he applied to go to Vietnam - with only ten months left of service - out of curiosity; while still there, he joined Vietnam Veterans Against the War and contributed a poem to the first anthology of writings by veterans of that war. During the several post-Marine years of writing THE SHORT-TIMERS, Hasford supported himself as a used bookstore clerk, editor of fetish magazines, and sometime roommate of Harlan Ellison, who had previously advised Hasford to give up and get out of the writing business (Ross). The manuscript endured several rounds of rejection due to subject matter most publishers then considered "box office poison" before its eventual acceptance by Harper. More good fortune followed with Kubrick's purchase of the film rights; Hasford struggled for and eventually won a co-writing credit for the FULL METAL JACKET screenplay, which closely replicates much of the novel's harrowing boot camp sequence. Especially rare signed (given Hasford's premature death in 1993), a exceptional copy of "the best work of fiction about the Vietnam War" (Newsweek). 8.25'' x 5.5''. Original quarter black cloth with red boards. Black endpapers. In original price-clipped pictorial dust jacket by John Sposato. 154 pages. Inscribed by Hasford on the half-title page: "for my friend / Bob / from Gus / Gustav Hasford / Silverlake Sept. 18, 1982." Some very faint soil to top edge of textblack. Trace sunning to jacket spine. Else bright, clean, and sharp.

Description
San Francisco: October 4, 1852. Very good.. [2]pp., with integral address leaf. Old folds, mild staining and soiling, three-inch closed tear to address leaf. An interesting letter documenting the family side of the California Gold Rush, in which a San Francisco man writes to his brother, offering to send his wife and daughters to Placerville as helpers. Interestingly, at first Phillips addresses the letter to his brother in Ohio, then scratches it out and writes in "Cal;" this most likely indicates the Phillipses hailed from Ohio and trekked to California along with scores of others in hopes of untold riches in the California gold fields. In his letter, Phillips writes that his wife, who has long been in San Francisco looking after a sick friend, can now leave as he is better, "And if you think best she will come up with the little girls and fix your carpets and superintend your affairs for a month or two untill your wife comes..." The formerly sick friend, Mr. Gardner, could also accompany them, apparently, as "He is coming up to P. and he wants you to give him work for a short time. Mr. G. is a good sailsman [sic] having been in the dry goods business...." While not overtly concerned with gold mining, the correspondence is nevertheless interesting for providing details on family routines during the Gold Rush era, when numerous families uprooted their lives and moved not only to places like San Francisco and Placerville, but between such locations during the years of speculation. A nice example of history from below, particularly notable for its domestic implications during the time of the great California Gold Rush.
