Description
40 pp. Small 8vo (198 x 125 mm.), 20th-cent. cloth-backed marbled boards, title on spine. Paris: Pérignon & Chariot, 1813. The scarce catalogue, fully priced in a contemporary hand, of the first auction administered by Pérignon (1785-1864), an influential dealer, collector, and eventual advisor to the Louvre. He assembled this group of paintings and drawings over the course of trips to Belgium and Holland. Many French dealers exploited the turbulent times of the Napoleonic era to travel and pry artworks from private hands and ecclesiastical collections. The 144 lots described include works from the Northern school by Jordaens, J. B. Weenix, J. & S. van Ruysdael, A. van Ostade, ter Borch, Dou, van Huysum, D. Teniers, Brauwer, Hals, Ph. & P. Wouwerman, Dujardin, J. Asselijn, Moucheron, Molnaert, Steen, Bega, etc. Among the French artists represented we find pieces by Taunay, Swagers, Greuze, Lantara, Norblin, Ingres, J. Vernet, etc. Each entry offers a concise description and measurements. Nice copy. With the engraved bookplate of G[eorges] P[annier] (1853-1944), the Parisian art dealer and collector of early art auction catalogues, on the front paste-down; the stamp of the Bibliothèque Heim on verso of title. ❧ Lugt 8456. For an instructive examination of Pérignon’s life see Laurence Lhinares, “Alexis-Nicolas Pérignon (1785-1864), peintre, expert, marchand et collectionneur,” in La revue des musées de France, Revue du Louvre, no. 5, 2013.

Description
Fayetteville: Lost Roads, 1979. First edition. Near Fine. Near Fine in original printed wraps. Toning to spine and minor offsetting to edges of wraps. Internally fresh and unmarked. Scarce in collectible condition. The second posthumous publication of Stanford's work (following Crib Death), published as Lost Roads Number 15. An increasingly scarce example of Stanford's maturing work, cut short by his suicide at 29. Threatening animals mingle with weary men and observant, suspicious women in these stark poems. Death creeps through many of the poems as well: "When you get lost on the road / You run into the dead." Near Fine.

Description
Paris: Seghers, 1948. First Edition. First printing, original wrappers, number 231 of 900 copies on Crèvecoeur du Marais paper (there were also 15 copies on Chine paper and 10 hors commerce copies for the author and illustrator). In French. Toning and rubbing, ownership signature to the front blank, else very good and internally clean. 41pp. with 4 drypoint etchings by Wols (Alfred Otto Wolfgang Schulze). "Visages" is a philosophical meditation on the human face as a site of meaning, power, and magical significance that transcends mere physical materiality. Sartre contrasts a hypothetical "society of statues"(rational, balanced, and just but faceless) with human society, which he characterizes as a "society of faces" ruled by these mysterious, idol-like objects that we carry on our bodies. He critiques psychological reductionism that treats faces as mere mechanical assemblages of muscle movements, arguing instead that faces are "natural fetishes" that possess an irreducible wholeness and immediate emotional presence. Exploring how faces function as sacred, taboo objects in human social relations; comparing them to religious relics carried in procession or totemic idols paraded through streets. Sartre emphasizes the paradox that while we cannot see our own faces directly, we learn about ourselves through encountering the faces of others, suggesting that facial recognition operates through an immediate, pre-cognitive apprehension rather than learned interpretation. Sartre steadily and concisely works out his idea that faces serve as the fundamental medium through which we experience otherness, emotion, and the irreducible mystery of human consciousness made visible. Sartre's conception of faces as natural fetishes offers a prescient critique of contemporary digital culture, where complex AI algorithms and facial recognition systems have transformed faces into quantifiable data points while paradoxically amplifying their social power through algorithmic curation of visual content and digital self-presentation. His insight that we access human consciousness through direct facial encounters takes on new dimensions in an era where authentic otherness becomes increasingly mediated by screens, filters, and algorithms that may fundamentally alter our pre-cognitive apprehension of human meaning. The ultimate irony is to be realized when Sartre's diverse landscape of human consciousness gets reduced to Instagram-filtered variations on the same theme, with our society of faces rapidly converging to the point where everyone looks like the Kardashians, or thinks they do, or wishes they do and the algorithm will happily indulge the delusion. Wols (Alfred Otto Wolfgang Schulze, 1913-1951) was one of the most significant avant-garde artists of the mid-twentieth century. Born in Berlin, Wols fled Nazi Germany and became deeply embedded in Parisian intellectual circles, where he developed his distinctive style as a pioneer of European lyrical abstraction and a key figure in tachism and informal art movements. His spontaneous, gestural approach to mark-making and his exploration of organic, biomorphic forms profoundly influenced post-war European art. Wols's four drypoint etchings in this volume exemplify his mastery of intimate, introspective imagery that complements Sartre's literary vision. The artist's tragic early death at age 38 cut short a career that had already established him as a crucial bridge between Surrealism and Abstract Expressionism, making his collaborative works with major literary figures like Sartre particularly significant in documenting the cross-pollination between existentialist philosophy and avant-garde visual art in post-war Paris.

[New York City]: N.P., 1975. Very good. 8½" x 5½". Stapled self-wrappers. Pp. 12. Very good: moderate wear and dust soiling; light creasing, patches of staining mostly on the two outermost pages. This is a giveaway for a sex party sponsored by SMads in January 1975. Nine of its twelve pages consist entirely of explicit personal ads, presumably of men who intended to experience the party. The penultimate page has a handy blank form to keep track of people met at the party, and the rear wrapper features art from Martin of Holland. OCLC locates no copies. Buenos Aires: Secrit, 1991. Near Fine. 8vo. [10], 54 pp. [5], pp. Original blue stiff wrappers. Extremely detailed catalogue of a small selection of important 16th-century Spanish books in the colleciton of Jorge M. Furt (1902-1971), an Argentine humanist and author. The extent of the cataloguing is attested by the 3-page collation of just ONE book, namely the 1533 Venice edition of the "Amadis de Gaula" (acquired from the antiquarian bookseller Rothstein in 1949 (see pp. 27-30; see also David Hook, The Arthur of the Iberians: The Arthurian Legends in the Spanish and Portuguese Worlds, 2015, footnote 1). The "Biblioteca y Archivo Furt" on the "Los Talas" ranch and estate near Luján, Argentina, is one of the most significant private libraries in South America, containing valuable early printed editions and archival material, especially on Juan Bautista Alberdi. Altogether it has been estimated that the library contains some 40,000 books. ¶ See especially: Domingo Buonocore's "Contribucion a la Bio-Bibliografia de Jorge Martin Furt."
