Description
London: Methuen Children's Books, 1971. First thus. Fine/Near Fine. One of 250 copies signed by the illustrator, Ernest H. Shepard. Bound in publisher's full green morocco by Zaehnsdorf in the publisher's printed slipcase. Illustrated in color throughout by Shepard, with illustrated map endpapers and a title-page vignette. Some sunning to spine, but still a lovely, Fine copy, bright and fresh throughout. Slipcase Near Fine with some sunning to edges. The Wind in the Willows, Grahame's famed children's novel, was first published in 1908 and introduces the beloved Mr. Toad, Rat, Badger, and Mole. Grahame began writing the book in his late forties after leaving his position as Secretary of the Bank of England. Much of the plot of The Wind in the Willows had its origins both in the bedtime stories Grahame had invented to tell his own son, and in Grahame's childhood experiences in Berkshire county. The book might not have been published if not for the efforts of President Theodore Roosevelt, who lobbied Methuen to release it. While reviews were mixed, the book became a classic - and would be adapted by A.A. Milne into the well known play Toad of Toad Hall in1929. "The Wind in the Willows is a worthy companion to The Golden Age and Dream Days. It is whimsical, fascinating by its apparent seriousness and that sense of underlying poetry which Mr. Grahame somehow manages to convey through all his nonsense" (contemporary New York Times review). Ernest H. Shepard (1879 - 1976) is best known for providing the iconic illustrations for Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh series (1924 - 1928). He also illustrated editions of Grahame's The Golden Age and Dream Days (both 1948). Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.

New York: Harcourt Brace, 1927. First edition. Near Fine/Near Fine. Second issue binding (showing the "G" in "Gantry" on the spine). Signed by the author on the front free endpaper. Octavo (7 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches; 189 x 133 mm). [viii], 1-432 pp. Original blue cloth. Front board and spine stamped and lettered in orange. Fore-edge uncut. In publisher's dust jacket. Jacket with slight wear to the spine ends and a little scuff to the spine panel. Jacket with price intact (but stuck through). All corners of jacket publisher-clipped. Small bookseller label on rear paste down. Overall a near fine book in a near fine dust jacket. Sinclair Lewis, the first American to win a Nobel Prize in Literature, was never afraid to highlight hypocrisy. In the novel Elmer Gantry, he turns his critical pen towards the clergy. Named after the title character, the satire follows Gantry from his days as a young divinity student troubled by his sexual desires to "a hypocritical minister and, later, a jackleg traveling evangelist. Some ministers of the day approved of the book as an attack on genuine abuses within their profession, and literary gadfly H. L. Mencken praised its satire of corrupt fundamentalism. Many critics, however, viewed the book as obscene and its satire as overdone." (American Dictionary of National Biography). It would eventually inspire a significant film adaptation in 1960 with Burt Lancaster and Shirley Jones, who both won Oscars, as did the screenplay by Richard Brooks. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.

Description
London: Chatto & Windus, 1937. First edition. Keynes B15. Reilly p. 279. "The Collected Works was issued in an edition of 500 copies, with 900 sets of sheets stored at the publisher's bindery; only 403 copies had been sold by March 1938, and the remaining unbound sheets were destroyed in April 1941 when Chatto & Windus' warehouse was bombed during the Blitz. The Collected Works became exceedingly scarce, and today it is impossible to obtain." - Cohen, Journey to the Trenches (N. Y., 1975). Killed during a night patrol near Arras in 1918, Rosenberg was one of the most promising poets and painters to die in the Great War. His war poems, such as "Louse Hunting", "Dead Man's Dump" and "Break of Day in the Trenches", rival the best poems of Owen, Graves and Sassoon. Dust jacket lightly foxed and worn and a bit dust-soiled, but a very good copy of a rare book. 8vo, frontispiece portrait, illustrated, original russet cloth, dust jacket. Description
Hollywood, California: Fine Crafts, Inc, 1970. NA. Near Fine. Move over, Manolo Blahnik! You have nothing on Fine Crafts, Inc.'s 7" Black Patent Opera Pumps or 7" Deliciously cheesy catalogue of Heel Sandals. For those goils who weren't man-enuf for the towering challenge, there were 6 1/4, 5 1/4, 5, and 4 1/2" alternatives, but we would note that the last option were advertised as a close out sale! The heels arms race was killing off the lower altitude trainers, one might suspect. This folded sheet four page "catalogue" is rife with grainy b/w photos, both of the products by themselves and with models, which we believe, but can't be sure, included both biological women and transvestites and perhaps other members of the trans community. The products were by no means limited to footwear, which accounts for only most of one page and indirectly a sliver of each of the other pages. The company was also peddling nylon stockings, panty hose, its earlier fashion catalogs and high heel books. Adding to the literary tone, if not tony-ness, were the magazines on offer, including genres or subgenres we never imagined existed: footwear magazines, big breast and bottom magazines, along with the less surprising to us transvestite magazines, not to mention transvestite books and new fetish paperbacks. The company being based in Hollywood, it wasn't about to confine its interest in celluloid as an offbeat fabric. Thus it has on sale skyscraper high heel films, high heel and corset films, strip tease films. At last, dress, primers and entertainment the clever body enhancement, which Fine Crafts also has answers to, with its breast insert and jelly kits, bra kits, latex chest frontal wear they dub the "treasure chest", and the final piece-de-resistance, or non-resistance, as the case may be, its artificial vagina. The catalogue has a mail in order blank on its last page. N.d., circa 1970The pages are 28 by 21.5 cm, and they were folded horizontally twice, like a typical business letter, to fit into a discreet envelope for mailing. We do not have the company's envelope. Otherwise, the glossy flyer has light age toning, a miniscule stain or two, trivial signs of handling, but we are comfortable designating it as being in Near Fine condition.

Description
Honolulu, Hawaii, U.S.A.: Hawaii Visitors Bureau, 1960. [MAPS] [TOURIST BROCHURE]. Four of the folded tourist brochures measure (6" x 3") and open to (12" x 9"). Each is printed on colored paper and features tourist information on one side, along with a relief map that includes an inset map of the eight major islands, showing their placement in the island chain on the verso. The maps include a compass rose, legend, elevations, major roads, towns, crops, sports facilities, hotels, and topography, featuring volcanic mountains, forests, parks, beaches, and more. Light age-toning at some folds, the Maui brochure has a ¼" cut on one panel; all near fine. The four large brochures with maps are: Hawaii, The Big Island; Kauai, The Garden Island; Maui, The Valley Isle; and Oahu, Crossroads of the Pacific. The fifth brochure is smaller and pictures the island of Molokai, it measures (6" x 3") and opens to (8 7/8" x 5 7/8"). It features a table of distances to various towns and to the airport from Kaunakakai. Dating the maps is based on hotels that opened in the early 1960s and closed in the late 1960s.

Description
Washington, D. C.: Buell & Blanchard, Printers, 1860. 14, [2 blanks] pp. Disbound, title leaf spotted. Good+. Blair charges that the Slave Power is the "discordant element among our institutions which has destroyed the compact upon which it rested, carried civil war into the Territories, from which by agreement it was self-excluded, and now daringly threatens to crush the Union itself, unless permitted to command in the choice of a Chief Magistrate of the United States." Blair denounces the Democratic Party, truly a 'Southern Rights' Party, now demanding that slaveowners have the right to bring their slaves anywhere in the country. Blair renders a detailed examination of the issues facing the country, their development, and a plea to shun disunionists of the South and abolitionists of the North-- both of whom wish to destroy the Union. LCP 1256. Not in Bartlett or Dumond.

Description
New York: Oxford University Press, 2001. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Near Fine. 10x7x2. First edition. An excellent copy. Binding tight and square, pages clean, bright, and unmarked. 2001 Hard Cover. xliv, 940 pp. Here is a volume that is as big and as varied as the nation it portrays. With over 1,400 entries written by some 900 historians and other scholars, it illuminates not only America's political, diplomatic, and military history, but also social, cultural, and intellectual trends; science, technology, and medicine; the arts; and religion. Here are the familiar political heroes, from George Washington and Benjamin Franklin, to Abraham Lincoln, Woodrow Wilson, and Franklin D. Roosevelt. But here, too, are scientists, writers, radicals, sports figures, and religious leaders, with incisive portraits of such varied individuals as Thomas Edison and Eli Whitney, Babe Ruth and Muhammed Ali, Black Elk and Crazy Horse, Margaret Fuller, Emma Goldman, and Marian Anderson, even Al Capone and Jesse James. The Companion illuminates events that have shaped the nation (the Great Awakening, Bunker Hill, Wounded Knee, the Vietnam War); major Supreme Court decisions (Marbury v. Madison, Roe v. Wade); landmark legislation (the Fugitive Slave Law, the Pure Food and Drug Act); social movements (Suffrage, Civil Rights); influential books (The Jungle, Uncle Tom's Cabin); ideologies (conservatism, liberalism, Social Darwinism); even natural disasters and iconic sites (the Chicago Fire, the Johnstown Flood, Niagara Falls, the Lincoln Memorial). Here too is the nation's social and cultural history, from Films, Football, and the 4-H Club, to Immigration, Courtship and Dating, Marriage and Divorce, and Death and Dying. Extensive multi-part entries cover such key topics as the Civil War, Indian History and Culture, Slavery, and the Federal Government. A new volume for a new century, The Oxford Companion to United States History covers everything from Jamestown and the Puritans to the Human Genome Project and the Internet--from Columbus to Clinton. Written in clear, graceful prose for researchers, browsers, and general readers alike, this is the volume that addresses the totality of the American experience, its triumphs and heroes as well as its tragedies and darker moments.

Description
Salt Lake City: Signature Books, 2007. First Edition. 160pp. Duodecimo [21 cm] Gray cloth with the title in black on the backstrip. Fine/Fine. Paul James Toscano was a member of the 'September Six' and a Salt Lake City based attorney, who in this book of essays embraces his doubts and examines his faith in the aftermath of his own excommunication. Toscano also celebrates LDS founder Joseph Smith's awe-inspired view of the universe. Paul Toscano was excommunicated from the LDS Church on September 19, 1993. The reasons for his excommunication, as reportedly given by church leaders, were apostasy and false teaching. According to Toscano, the actual reason was insubordination in refusing to curb his sharp criticism of Church leaders' preference for legalism, ecclesiastical tyranny, white-washed Mormon history, and hierarchical authoritarianism, which privilege the image of the corporate church above its commitment to its members, to the teachings and the revelations of founder Joseph Smith, and to the gospel of Jesus Christ.
