Description
Paris: Gulielmi Pele, 1646. Title in red and black, decorative woodcut on dedication, 3 full-page plates and 2 text illustrations. Nineteenth century boards, re-backed; interior is lightly toned throughout, with occasional spots and a small tear in the lower blank margin not affecting text. From the library of A. Gabriel Pouchet, with a stamp on recto of first blank leaf. Generally an excellent copy. First appearance of both treatises together. The present work is essentially the 1645 edition (printed by Nicolaus Redelichuysen) with a cancel title. The first book represents Alpini's best-known and most important medical work, a comprehensive account of Egyptian medical practice, and among the earliest accounts of non-European medicine. Of special interest is his introduction of moxa (mugwort) to European medical practice. The second book, on the medicine of the East Indies, was based on de Bondt's research in Java. It is divided into four sections: criticisms of Garcia de Orta's treatise on Asian materia medica; health and diet in the East Indies; Indian methods of treatment; and observations from autopsies. His treatise includes the first modern descriptions of cholera, beri-beri, tropical dysentery, and yaws, making it "a milestone in the history of medicine.

Description
Spain: N.p., 1961. Archive of 44 black and white vintage photographs, 21 photographic duplications of artistic renderings, one invitation, and three programs for the openings of various buildings whose interiors were designed by Valencia-based interior designer Vicente Melio Alfonso during Francisco Franco's fascist Spanish regime. This archive largely illustrates his work on two theaters: the Cine Imperial in Villena, and the Teatro-Cine Paya in Burriana. Teatro-Cine Paya material includes a program and an invitation for the theatre's opening, as well as 3 artistic renderings of the space and 21 black and white photographs, including shots of the theater, projection room, murals, bar in the lobby, and even a shot of the very modern-lookng urinals in the men's bathroom. Material for the Cine Imperial includes a program for the theater's 1958 inauguration as well as a program for the first film shown there ("Viage a Italia"), 4 renderings and 11 black and white photographs, including the bar, theater, staircase, and extensive mural work in the lobby. While the Cine Imperial was torn down in 1982, the Teatro-Cine Paya remains open today. Melio Alfonso's work seen here also includes the Forte Manufacturing construction showroom (seen here in one rendering and seven slightly bizarre photographs, toilets placed in the center of the room), two renderings for a car dealership, and ten renderings and five photographs of unknown theaters. His works reflect the Franco regime's interest in imposing, futuristic structures, featuring high, long-lined ceilings, eagle crests, and pictorial murals. Photographs and renderings approximately 9.25 x 7 inches, with 35 of them housed in a 13 x 10 inch half-black leatherette, half-yellow cloth photo scrapbook with gilt titles. Photos Near Fine, leatherette photo book Very Good. Complete collation available upon request.

New York: Oxford University Press, 2022. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Fine. 7x2x10. First edition. Brand new from publisher. An exceptional copy. 2022 Hard Cover. xxiv, 834 pp. Foreword by Marcus Samuelsson, includes two sections of color photographic plates. Anthropologists and historians have confirmed the central role alcohol has played in nearly every society since the dawn of human civilization, but it is only recently that it has been the subject of serious scholarly inquiry. The Oxford Companion to Spirits and Cocktails is the first major reference work to cover the subject from a global perspective, and provides an authoritative, enlightening, and entertaining overview of this third branch of the alcohol family. It will stand alongside the bestselling Companions to Wine and Beer, presenting an in-depth exploration of the world of spirits and cocktails in a groundbreaking synthesis. The Companion covers drinks, processes, and techniques from around the world as well as those in the US and Europe. It provides clear explanations of the different ways that spirits are produced, including fermentation, distillation, and ageing, alongside a wealth of new detail on the emergence of cocktails and cocktail bars, including entries on key cocktails and influential mixologists and cocktail bars. With entries ranging from Manhattan and mixology to sloe gin and stills, the Companion combines coverage of the range of spirit-based drinks around the world with clear explanations of production processes, and the history and culture of their consumption. It is the ultimate guide to understanding what is in your glass. The Companion is lavishly illustrated throughout, and appendices include a timeline of spirits and distillation and a guide to mixing drinks.
