Description
Boston: Printed by Benjamin Harris, and John Allen, for Joseph Brunning at the corner of the Prison-lane, 1691. FIRST EDITION. 151 x 89 mm (5 7/8 x 3 1/2"). 4 p.l., 152 pp. [lacking the four leaves of quire S, containing pp. 129-36, good facsimiles of which accompany the volume]; A CONTEMPORANEOUS ADVERTISEMENT FOR THE BOOKSELLER WILKINS MOUNTED ONTO RECTO OF REAR FLYLEAF, PRESUMABLY AT THE TIME. Contemporary sprinkled sheep, flat spine. Housed in fine modern brown clamshell box, calf spine with black morocco label. Front flyleaf inscribed by an early owner with facsimile signatures of John Eliot and three others; second front flyleaf with ownership signature of Hannah Wainwright and a presentation inscription "To M. M. Dean, Presented by J. M. Moriarty, 1843," and with Dean's own gift inscription to the Newton Theological Institute (from which this copy was deaccessioned). Mather: Howes M-398; Sabin 46561; Wing M-1163. Broadside: Bristol, "Supplement to Charles Evans' American Bibliography, B-127; Shipton & Mooney 39281; Wing W-2216A; ESTC W15418; not in Ford's "Broadsides, Ballads, &c. Printed in Massachusetts, 1639-1800." See Thomas, Isaiah, "History of Printing in American (1970), pp. 186-7. Boards with scratches and a couple patches of lost patina from insect activity, first three quires and final leaf with half-inch tears to gutter margin at tail, occasional minor stains and faint dampstaining, margins trimmed a bit close, affecting the very end of the text lines on p. 107, but a surprisingly well-preserved copy (apart from the missing leaves) of a fragile item in its original unsophisticated binding, and so rare and so interesting that condition doesn't much matter. To begin with, this is the first printing of Puritan minister Cotton Mather's biography of John Eliot (ca. 1604-90), who translated the Geneva Bible into the language of the Massachuset tribe--but there is considerably more to the story here. Created over the course of four years, beginning in 1660, "Eliot's Indian Bible," or the "Algonquian Bible," was the first complete Bible to be printed in America. Mather (1663-1728) describes Eliot's evangelism to the Indians, his acquisition of their language, and his painstaking translation of Scripture. The biography is interesting and valuable enough by itself (especially for its 17th century American imprint), but our copy contains an additional extremely rare piece of early American ephemera--a broadside that advertises the shop of Boston bookseller Richard Wilkins, where one might find "such a Variety of Books on all Subjects both Old & New, as is not to be found in any other part of America." In the chapter on "Booksellers of Boston" in Isaiah Thomas' "History of Printing in America," Wilkins is mentioned as having premises "Near the Town-House" in 1684. Thomas notes that Wilkins (ca. 1636-1704) had emigrated from Limerick in Ireland to escape religious persecution, and established the reputation of being a "person of good sense" and "a Pious man." One of the earliest American booksellers' broadsides, Wilkins' advertisement describes his stock as: "Polemical & Practical Divinity; & Commentaries upon the Scriptures; together with useful Treatises in Grammer, School-Books, Chyrurgery, Merchandize, Husbandry, Astronomy, Geometry, Law, Military Affayrs, and other Subjects; all at such Reasonable Rates, as have not heretofore been afforded in these parts of the World." This seems to be the earliest broadside advertisement for a bookseller printed in the American colonies; OCLC finds other printed bookseller ads that appear in a book--usually on the final page or at the end of the front matter--but this is the only pre-1700 example we could find of an American-printed bookseller advertisement that stands alone. OCLC and LibHub locate just one copy of our broadside (at Harvard's Houghton Library); like ours, it is mounted on the blank page facing p. 152 in Mather's "Triumphs of the Reformed Religion." (STC lists an additional copy of the work at the John Rylands Library in Manchester, but that institution's online catalogue identifies their copy as a reproduction of the one at Harvard.) The English Short Title Catalogue suggests that the location of the advertisement, as well as its typeface and layout, indicate that it was also printed by Harris and Allen. The suggestion is also made that Wilkins may have taken advantage of the opportunity for free advertising by generally placing the ad in books he sold. This is perhaps unlikely, given how rare the advertisement now is. Even apart from the broadside, our Eliot biography is quite rare, especially in agreeable condition: we could trace just two copies this century in RBH, one very defective and one lacking its title leaf (which sold for $10,625 in 2014). This copy was a gift to Rev. Myron Munson Dean (1811-61) from his brother-in-law Dr Joseph Moseley Moriarty Sr. (1810-1847). Dean subsequently donated the volume to his alma mater, the Newton Theological Institution in Newton Centre, Massachusetts, which began as a pioneering Baptist educational center for the New England region. The institution eventually merged with the prestigious Andover Theological Seminary, which in turn, in 2026, relocated from Massachusetts to Connecticut, formally becoming part of Yale Divinity School. Dean had been among the earlier students of the Newton Theological Institution: he was admitted in 1835, only 10 years after the institution's founding. The municipality of Newton in Massachusetts played such a central role in John Eliot's ministry in the 17th century that when Dean donated this volume to his alma mater in the 19th century he may have done so with the feeling that the book was coming home..

Two volumes. Quarto, contemporary full red pebbled morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spines and covers, raised bands, black and tan morocco spine labels, all edges gilt. $4500.First edition of this beautifully illustrated study of costumes and decorations by Shaw, one of the greatest illuminators of the 19th century, with 94 plates of finely tailored and crafted French and English Medieval dress and accoutrements, most exquisitely hand-colored, as well as numerous in-text wood engravings and initials printed in colors from wood blocks. A lovely copy in contemporary full morocco-gilt by J. Wright.""Shaw's career was devoted to rescuing the English past through a long series of imposing books on architecture and art, published chiefly by William Pickering at the Chiswick Press. He used a variety of processes to reproduce his drawings: copper engravings, lithographs, chromolithographs, wood engravings, and woodblocks printed in color. Dresses and Decorations of the Middle Ages… is one of the finest of his works"" (Ray 102). Appearing in monthly parts from 1840, this was Shaw's ""most ambitious work… [with] plates highly finished and heightened in gold… It is a magnificent production. There are 94 plates, showing paintings, miniatures, stained glass, furnishings, glasses, chests, vestments, gold cups, [and] jewelry… mostly on copper, hand-colored in the most sumptuous way; in addition the text… is adorned with [98] elaborate initials and decorations printed in colors from wood blocks, the only Shaw-Whittingham book in which this occurs. It has a considerable claim to be called the most handsome book produced in the whole of the 19th century"" (McLean, 66). With an additional 128 uncolored in-text woodcuts serving as tailpieces. Issued the same year as a large-paper copy, no priority determined. Colas 2720. Hiler, 796. Octavo, original silver-stamped gray cloth, original slipcase. $1400.First edition, first printing of the much-anticipated first volume of Nobel laureate President Obama's memoir, signed by him on the publisher's tipped-in leaf—""the story will continue in the second volume, but Barack Obama has already illuminated a pivotal moment in American history""—with 32 pages of color and black-and-white illustrations, publisher's deluxe edition with photographic portrait affixed to front panel of original slipcase.America's 44th president and the fourth president awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, Barack Obama also made history as America's first African American president. Named one of the New York Times' ""Ten Best Books of 2020,"" A Promise Land ""starts early in his life, charting his initial political campaigns, and ends with a meeting in Kentucky where he is introduced to the SEAL team involved in the Abbottabad raid that killed Osama bin Laden. His focus is more political than personal, but when he does write about his family it is with a beauty close to nostalgia… Obama is as fine a writer as they come. It is not merely that this book avoids being ponderous, as might be expected… but that it is nearly always pleasurable to read, sentence by sentence, the prose gorgeous in places, the detail granular and vivid… He invites the reader inside his head as he ponders life-or-death issues of national security, examining every detail of his decision-making… Here, then, is an overwhelmingly decent man giving an honest account of himself… The story will continue in the second volume, but Barack Obama has already illuminated a pivotal moment in American history"" (New York Times). ""First Edition"" stated on copyright page: publishers' signed deluxe edition containing 32 color and black-and-white illustrations. Original slipcase with black-and-white photographic portrait (3-1/2 by 3-1/4 inches) affixed to front panel. Fine condition.

Description
1827. First Edition. (SLAVERY) STROUD, George M. A Sketch of the Laws Relating to Slavery in the Several States of the United States of America. Philadelphia: Kimber and Sharpless, 1827. Octavo, original half tan and light brown paper boards, uncut. $1350.First edition of Judge Stroud's groundbreaking 1827 work documenting state slave laws and relevant Constitutional provisions, held as a key resource for Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin, a cornerstone volume “considered by many the best of the ante-bellum studies"" on slavery, uncut in original boards.""The ink was hardly dry on the Constitution when the powers of Congress relative to slavery were called into question"" (Dumond, 153). The Fugitive Slave Act was passed in 1793, and in 1819 Congress began a bitter debate over slavery in the territories that culminated in the 1820 Missouri Act. At this time Philadelphia Judge George Stroud began work on Sketch of the Laws. ""This work, the first substantial legal treatise on American slavery, is considered by many the best of the ante-bellum studies"" (Cohen 9877). His coverage of state slave codes and Constitutional provisions is a cornerstone of the legal literature. Published well before ""the Dred Scott decision, Stroud's book had extensive influence upon national legal thinking on the issue of slavery. For example, it is believed by some scholars that Harriet Beecher Stowe gained her knowledge of slave laws from Stroud's work"" (Johnson, Stroud's Slave Laws, vi). In legal literature of antislavery, one key group is on ""slave codes and their administration. The purpose of these works was to use slave law as data, credible data, as to the realities of slavery. The first, and in many ways the best, of these works was George Stroud, A Sketch of the Laws"" (Cover, Justice Accused, 149n). Blockson 9965. Sabin 93097. Work, 343. Harvard Law Catalogue II:680. Text generally fresh with scattered foxing, mild embrowning, mild edge-wear, rubbing to spine label. A very good copy of a major early work on slavery.

He applied himself closely to literature, and especially to historical studies. His name is chiefly preserved by his great work Origine des Lois, des Arts, et des Sciences, chez les Anciens Peuples (in which he was assisted by his friend Fugère). It treats the history of civilization among the Assyrians, Babylonians, Egyptians, Phoenicians, and the early Greeks, in Volume I; and in Volume II, the period from the death of Jacob to the establishment of monarchy among the Hebrews… with the states of Greece, and the people of Crete. The third volume carries the subject down to the time of Cyrus, and upon the same plan as the other two. Goguet adds also dissertations on ancient coins; on the astronomical periods of the Chaldaeans; on the antiquities of the Babylonians, Egyptians, and Chinese"" (McClintock & Strong Biblical Cyclopedia). Description
One sheet of paper (318 x 465 mm.), woodblock printed on both sides. [Japan]: ca. 1764-85. In Edo-period Japan, bansho (small buildings or huts for security and surveillance guards) were placed in central locations. There were several types of bansho, and the present document was printed as an instructional legal guide for security men in tsuji-bansho (neighborhood guard stations), located in the streets of samurai residences, especially in Edo. The guards needed to know what to do and how to proceed in the unusual situations they might confront: deserted children (a child under three is “deserted” but an older child is “lost”), drunks and vagrants, corpses (murders or suicides), violent behavior, illegal disposals and dumpings, altercations and fights in front of the samurai mansions, fugitives, violence and injuries within the samurai residences, violent attacks using swords, jurisdictional questions (if a body is found on the border between two tsuji-bansho, the location of a foot of the body — for men it was the left foot and for women, the right — determined which jurisdiction had responsibility), lost objects, unruly or dead horses, how to rescue people who had fallen into moats, suspicious characters, accidents on the streets, etc. Many case studies are provided. At the end of the reverse side, there is a sort of afterword stating that these rules were selected by Togen inshi (a pen name), with his seal, and that 500 sheets were printed. The person responsible for this document, Seisai (another pen name), has placed his seal at the beginning of the text. In fine condition and a remarkable survival.

Description
1918. [Labor Organizing] United Mine Workers of America archive, 1910s through 1930s, when the coal industry was being reshaped by mechanization, falling labor demand, and increasingly unstable operator finances. After the wartime expansion of coal production, mine operators pushed wage reductions and open shop policies while new machinery displaced large numbers of underground workers across Pennsylvania, Illinois, Kentucky, and Tennessee. The United Mine Workers of America responded through district agreements and local organizing campaigns that attempted to preserve wage protections and union jurisdiction across rapidly changing mining regions. This archive preserves those conflicts through UMWA District 1, 5, 11, and 19 material, including a 1918 transfer card issued to Frank Basbuch of Local 3168 in Drift, Pennsylvania, printed constitutions and agreements governing interstate coal fields, and three Peabody Coal Company Mine No. 43 payroll statements and original envelopes issued to Charles "Chas" Furlong in 1929 and 1930. The pay records preserve the everyday economics of Depression-era mining labor through deductions for rent, powder, lamps, union dues, and medical fees while district agreements record the larger institutional struggle over wages, hours, and safety in the bituminous coal industry. Ten items, 1918-1930s, from Pennsylvania, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, and related UMWA districts, consisting of transfer credentials, district constitutions, wage agreements, payroll statements, and company correspondence relating to interwar coal mining labor organization. [1] United Mine Workers of America. Transfer Card issued to Frank Basbuch, Local Union No. 3168, Drift, Pennsylvania, 1918. Printed and manuscript union credential signed by local officers recording Basbuch's union standing buring the wartime expansion of Pennsylvania coal production. The transfer system allowed miners to move between districts while preserving dues status and union recognition. [2] Agreement by and Between the Pittsburgh District Coal Operators and the United Mine Workers of America District No. 5. 1918-1920. Pittsburgh district agreement governing wages and labor relations between operators and UMWA District 5 during the immediate postwar coal settlement. [3] Agreement Between the United Mine Workers of America of District 19 and the Coal Operators of Southeastern Kentucky and East Tennessee. 1920. Printed agreement for Appalachian coal fields where recognition, wage scales, and operator authority remained contested after wartime production demands. [4] Constitution of the United Mine Workers of America District 19. 1920. District constitution setting out governance, membership rules, officer duties, and union procedure for southeastern Kentucky and East Tennessee miners. [5] Constitution of District 1, the United Mine Workers of America. Scranton, Pennsylvania, revised 1921. Printed constitution for the anthracite district centered in northeastern Pennsylvania, issued from Scranton as the union faced postwar wage pressure and industrial reorganization. [6] Contract District No. 11, United Mine Workers of America. 1920-1922. District 11 contract governing organized miners in Illinois during a period of intensified mechanization and unstable coal demand. [7] Contract and Wage Schedules to April 1, 1923, District No. 11, United Mine Workers of America. 1922-1924. Printed contract and wage schedule extending District 11 bargaining terms through the early 1920s coal downturn. [8] Peabody Coal Company. Mine No. 43 payroll statement issued to Charles "Chas" Furlong. October 1929. Printed payroll form itemizing earnings and deductions, including a line item for Furlong's union dues. With original envelope. [9] Peabody Coal Company. Mine No. 43 payroll statement issued to Charles "Chas" Furlong. January 1930. Printed payroll form itemizing earnings and deductions, including a line item for Furlong's union dues. With original envelope. [10] Peabody Coal Company. Measures 9.5" by 7.75". The letter reads in full: "Dear Sir, I have a negro man for hire and find some difficulty in finding a suitable situation here, therefore would be glad that I could find a place in your country and would take in as a particular favor if you will make some inquiring in your neighborhood and let me know what the prospects are, and particularly the price- I have $200 for you which is all I can raise at present and unless their is some change in the times I shall be utterly unable to collect my debts of $1600 now due. We are all well also Jan [sic] Millers family - [...] -- your friend, H.M. Moffett." Description
ALBERG, CARL. (1900-1986). Swedish-born, American boat designer and pioneer of fiberglass yacht design. Detailed deck plan and side elevation for a 21' motor boat, drawn in pencil and signed ("Carl A. Alberg"). 1p. Small folio (approximately 11¼" by 10"). Marblehead, October 25, 1975. The LOA (length overall) is 21' 0", beam is 7' 6", draft is 1' 10 ½"; displacement is 3000 pounds, and the drawings' scale is ½" = 1'. Alberg has identified this sheet of drawings as project #44. The boat calls for a 20 HP diesel engine. After settling in the U.S. at 25, Alberg worked his way up from rigger to designer, opening his own office in 1946. In 1959, he designed the immensely successful Triton for Pearson Yachts, the first fiberglass auxiliary and still a popular yacht design. "Carl Alberg succeeded in bringing forth many of the first production fiberglass cruising sailboats from the design board to the dockside… His work from the late 1950s through his on-going work at the time of his death in 1986 was for a whole new market, the middle income sailor who may have been new to sailing or upgrading from smaller boats, many daysailors or racers," ("Carl Arne Alberg - Pioneer in Classic Plastic," Good Old Boat Magazine, Wallace). Alberg's many successful designs include the Cape Dory 22, the Typhoon Daysailor, the Corinthian Conquest, and the Pearson Ensign and Ariel. In very fine condition. Alberg's original boat designs are rare as most are held institutionally.

Description
London: The Royal Princess' Theatre, 1852. Vintage broadside for a series of performances at the Royal Princess's Theatre, Saturday, December 11, 1852, including Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night, or What You Will," Samuel Birch's 1825 musical drama "The Adopted Child," and John Poole's 1833 play "Deaf as a Post: A Farce, in One Act," two of which are noted as the first of four farewell performances by British stage comedian and actor George Bartley. With a manuscript ink annotation of a gift inscription on the bottom right. Named for Princess Victoria before her accession as queen, the Royal Princess's Theatre opened in 1836 on Oxford Street in London on the previous location of the "Queen's Bazaar," a gallery which opened in 1828 and housed paintings and a moving diorama by the celebrated British painter Clarkson Frederick Stanfield and David Roberts. The theatre was most celebrated for its renowned productions of Shakespearean revivals under the management of the noted actor Charles John Kean (1849-1860), boldly noted on the broadside just beneath the title block. The first announcement on the broadside is the final four nights of performances by Bartley, performing in two of the evening's plays, as well as two the following Monday, one Wednesday, and ending with "Mr. Bartley's Farewell Benefit under the Patronage of Her Majesty and H.R.H. Prince Albert, on Saturday, 18th Dec., that Day being the 50th Anniversary of his First Appearance in London." The broadside also announces upcoming performances of John Westland Marston's 1852 melodrama "Anne Blake," (The Royal Princess Theatre's house dramatist) Dion Boucicault's 1852 melodrama "The Corsican Brothers; or, the Fatal Duel," based on the 1844 novella by Alexandre Dumas, as well as Shakespeare's comedy "Much Ado About Nothing," Thomas Haynes Bayly's 1847 play "The Spitalfields Weaver," Shakespeare's "The Merry Wives of Windsor," and James Kenney's 1823 play "Sweehearts and Wives." Broadsides, 19.5 x 20 inches, mounted onto a 20.75 x 22 inch board. Very Good, with edgewear, toning, and creasing commensurate with age, with the top left portion reattached. Board with edgewear and pinholes to the corners.

Description
Boston: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2018. Reprint. Hard Cover. Fine/Fine. 5x1x8. Lee, Alan. 2024 11th printing. Spine ends very lightly bruised, otherwise an excellent copy. Binding tight and square, pages clean, bright, and unmarked. 2018 Hard Cover. 302 pp. Color plates by Alan Lee. "In the Tale of The Fall of Gondolin are two of the greatest powers in the world. There is Morgoth of the uttermost evil, unseen in this story but ruling over a vast military power from his fortress of Angband. Deeply opposed to Morgoth is Ulmo, second in might only to Manwe, chief of the Valar: he is called the Lord of Waters, of all seas, lakes, and rivers under the sky. But he works in secret in Middle-earth to support the Noldor, the kindred of the Elves among whom were numbered Hurin and Turin Turambar. Central to this enmity of the gods is the city of Gondolin, beautiful but undiscoverable. It was built and peopled by Noldorin Elves who, when they dwelt in Valinor, the land of the gods, rebelled against their rule and fled to Middle-earth. Turgon King of Gondolin is hated and feared above all his enemies by Morgoth, who seeks in vain to discover the marvellously hidden city, while the gods in Valinor in heated debate largely refuse to intervene in support of Ulmo's desires and designs. Into this world comes Tuor, cousin of Turin, the instrument of Ulmo's designs. Guided unseen by him Tuor sets out from the land of his birth on the fearful journey to Gondolin, and in one of the most arresting moments in the history of Middle-earth the sea-god himself appears to him, rising out of the ocean in the midst of a storm. In Gondolin he becomes great; he is wedded to Idril, Turgon's daughter, and their son is Earendel, whose birth and profound importance in days to come is foreseen by Ulmo. At last comes the terrible ending. Morgoth learns through an act of supreme treachery all that he needs to mount a devastating attack on the city, with Balrogs and dragons and numberless Orcs. After a minutely observed account of the fall of Gondolin, the tale ends with the escape of Turin and Idril, with the child Earendel, looking back from a cleft in the mountains as they flee southward, at the blazing wreckage of their city. They were journeying into a new story, the Tale of Earendel, which Tolkien never wrote, but which is sketched out in this book from other sources. Following his presentation of Beren and Luthien Christopher Tolkien has used the same 'history in sequence' mode in the writing of this edition of The Fall of Gondolin. In the words of J.R.R. Tolkien, it was 'the first real story of this imaginary world' and, together with Beren and Luthien and The Children of Hurin, he regarded it as one of the three 'Great Tales' of the Elder Days.
