Description
1931. SOUR GRAPES! CALDER, Alexander. Fables of Aesop. with an original drawing by Calder. [6], 124, [10] pp., illustrated with 50 line-block reproductions after pen-and-ink drawings by Calder. 4to, 255 x 195 mm., bound in publisher's over boards, in the original cardboard slipcase, in a new half morocco folding box. Paris: Harrison of Paris, 1931. The publisher's copy of the deluxe issue of Calder's most significant book, illustrated with figures from Aesop constructed in the same style as his imaginary Circus figures and in his wire portraits and statues that dominated his creative output during the 1930s. This copy has an original signed Calder drawing for "The fox and the grapes", one of the more elaborate images in the book. The deluxe issue is especially sought after, being exquisitely printed on Spanish handmade paper incorporating coloured silk-threads. The Calder drawings for Aesop are creative and playful, marking this as a major example of modern book illustration. This is the fifth publication of Monroe Wheeler's Harrison of Paris publishing firm. One of 50 copies on Spanish Guarro paper with an original drawing, also with the original paper knife laid in. PROVENANCE: This copy belonged to Monroe Wheeler, with his book plate. The Artist and the Book 47. Museum of Modern Art 120.

Description
Osaka: 1868. The Osada Sakubei merchant family in Osaka, one of the wealthiest of that great business city, was founded in 1626. Initially rice brokers, they soon expanded into the very lucrative business of providing loans to powerful feudal lords (daimyō). With the establishment of the Meiji Restoration in 1868 and the abolition of the domain system, the traditional function of Japanese merchant banks was transformed, and the Osada Sakubei, unable to adapt by finding other clients, went bankrupt in 1874, due to the high number of unpaid debts from the feudal domains. As their business collapsed, the family’s first step to raise funds was to sell their collection of art and cultural items, which included tea ceremony tools, luxury furnishings, paintings, vertical scrolls, many notable porcelains, etc. This collection of materials is related to the auction, which took place on 23 August 1868 (Keiō 4), considered an auspicious day by its organizer, Funaya Hisatarō 船屋久太郎 (also known as Funakyū 船久). 1. The wrapper for this archive is entitled on the upper side in manuscript “Osaka Osada shi dōgu nyūsatsu” 大阪長田氏道具入札 (“Auction for Mr. Osada’s Collection in Osaka”). The wrapper is charming, with the original flaps and string ties. 2. “Rakusatsu chō” 落札帳 (“Results & Buyers’ Names”). This manuscript contains the final prices for the lots, brief descriptions of the items, and buyers’ names. Each has the seal of approval. 89 folding leaves, 8vo (245 x 172 mm.), orig. self-wrappers, stitched as issued. 3. “Kaozuke chō” 顔付帳 (“Agenda of Preliminary Meetings”). The auctioneers’ staff had meetings on 21, 22, and 23 August, and this is the list of tasks and who was responsible. 4 folding leaves, oblong agenda format (125 x 345 mm.), orig. self-wrappers, stitched as issued. 4. “Nyūsatsu dōgu atetzuke chō” 入札道具当付帳 (“Items for Bidding, Gathered”). The inventory of the sale with lot numbers and object descriptions, followed by trade symbols, which we cannot decipher. 21 folding leaves, oblong agenda format (125 x 324 mm.), orig. self-wrappers, stitched as issued. 5. “Takajime chō” 高〆帳 (“Tally Book”). A fascinating document providing the names of the buyers and the sums of their purchases. 6 folding leaves, oblong agenda format (125 x 347 mm.), orig. self-wrappers, stitched as issued. 6. “Mawashi banzuke chō” 廻シ番付帳 (“Seating Arrangement & Final Bids Register”). The hierarchical seating arrangement is still observed at Japanese book auctions. 13 folding leaves, oblong agenda format (125 x 347 mm.), orig. self-wrappers, stitched as issued. 7. “Kinsen shutsunyū chō” 金銭出入帳 (“Receipts & Payments Account Book”). 4 folding leaves, oblong agenda format (125 x 347 mm.), orig. self-wrappers, stitched as issued. 8. “Zatsuyō chō” 雑用帳 (“Miscellaneous Memoranda”). 4 folding leaves, oblong agenda format (125 x 347 mm.), orig. self-wrappers, stitched as issued. 9. “…Sho nyūyō to kōkoku nado uchiawase” 諸入用と広告など打合せ (“Memoranda of Matters Related to Advertisements and Miscellaneous Subjects”). The expenses for advertising the sale. 4 folding leaves, oblong agenda format (123 x 325 mm.), orig. self-wrappers, orig. stitching. 10. A bundle of 14 sheets, tied at head with the original string, of invoices and receipts. Some appear with names, their seals, addresses, and company names. Fine condition. Archives of this sort rarely survive.

Description
San Francisco: Whitton, Towne & Co, 1856. 52pp. Disbound with light to moderate foxing, Good+. Wiegand, who entered the copyright, was the 25-year old assayer of the U.S. Mint in San Francisco. He published this Lecture, under the pseudonym ' W. Carroll,' to answer the "vituperations" of his critics; and to raise money for himself "on the eve of being turned out of office for the exercise of my constitutionally guaranteed rights as a free American citizen." Wiegand had come to the defence of Reverend Scott who, virtually alone among area clergy, had denounced the Vigilance Committee and its "Lynch law court." Though he supports the Committee, Wiegand opposes the harsh proscription of Dr. Scott. In the course of this lengthy lecture, he arraigns "the lamentable corruption of our public Press" and many powerful people, including federal authorities. These include especially his boss, J. Ross Browne, who would fire him, and "those poor miserable drivellers, the Gwins, the Wellers, and the minor lights, who tormented Mr. Browne into such action." Wiegand's combative nature evidently was unnoticed when he later moved to Nevada. In the Appendix of 'Roughing It', Mark Twain calls him a "lamb." FIRST EDITION. Cohen 4205. Rocq 12820. Cowan 682. Greenwood 788. Not in Eberstadt, Decker, Soliday. OCLC 58933504 [1- CA State Lib.].

Description
Sicily, Naples and Turin, 1764. Very good. Together 6 items: 1 broadside (46 x 34.5 cm) + 5 bandi (folio sheets, each folded once, various sizes, various wear, some signatures clipped, others supplied in manuscript, assorted manuscript annotations, extracted from bindings). Small but very interesting collection of Bandi on the prohibition of tobacco, all scarce (none are found in OCLC / FirstSearch). As there was no centralized government in Italy, the restrictions on Tobacco was a quagmire of regional taxation, restriction, and monopolization, as is attested by the bandi in the present collection. Increasing tobacco consumption in the Italian penensula merited the establishment of fiscal laws by various States. The present items illustrate the expansion of tobacco culture, and the disjointed governmental responses from Sicily, Naples, and Turin: 1. Broadside: Carlo [...] 6. 5. Manifesto Camerale che ristabilisce la vendita, e distribuzione del Tabacco nel Luogo di Rochetta Belbo (13 February 1764), 3 pp. with Tariffs.

The second letter is a thank you note after the talk and feedback how the talk was received. - [?], President, Auckland Chamber of Commerce, Auckland, NZ, 2 letters, 1952; writes to Habib, at American Embassy, Wellington, NZ; another talk is planned for Habib, this time to the Chamber of Commerce at Auckland, details of the talk are given; the second letter gives feedback, as well as a newspaper clipping of the talk, which apparently encourages New Zealand to increase meat production for export to America. - Ian Wilson, Secretary, The Economic Society of Australia and New Zealand, Wellington, NZ, 1953; writes to Habib at the American Embassy, Wellington, NZ; Wilson congratulates Habib's election to the society. - [?], Cambridge, 1953; written on letterhead of A.A. Philip Charles Habib (1920-1992) Philip Charles Habib was an American career diplomat. Called one of the "pre-eminent career diplomats in American post-war history," he was best known for his work as Ronald Reagan's special envoy to the Middle East 1981–83. In that role he averted an Israel-Syria war and an Israel-PLO war in 1981, then negotiated a peaceful end to Israel's 1982 siege of Beirut. In 1986 he was instrumental in ending Ferdinand Marcos's attempt to steal the 1986 presidential election in the Philippines. As U.S. special envoy to Central America in 1986–87, he helped Costa Rican president Oscar Arias shape and sell the peace plan that led to the end of the region's civil wars. He had come out of retirement to take each of those assignments. During his 30-year career as a Foreign Service Officer, he had mostly specialized in Asia. In 1968, he was instrumental in halting the escalation of U.S. involvement in Vietnam. After his death, The New York Times described him as "the outstanding professional diplomat of his generation in the United States". Born in Brooklyn, New York, on 25 February 1920, Habib was raised in a predominantly Jewish neighborhood of its Bensonhurst section by Lebanese Maronite Catholic parents. His father ran a grocery store. Habib graduated from New Utrecht High School in Brooklyn and worked as a shipping clerk before starting his undergraduate study in forestry at the University of Idaho in Moscow. After graduating in 1942 from the UI's College of Forestry, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II and attained the rank of captain. Discharged from the service in 1946, Habib continued his education via the G.I. Bill in a doctoral program in agricultural economics at the University of California in Berkeley, and earned a Ph.D. in 1952. In 1947, recruiters for the United States Foreign Service visited the Berkeley campus. They were particularly interested in candidates who did not fit the then-current mold of Ivy League blueblood WASPs. Habib took the Foreign Service exam and scored in the top 10% nationally. Beginning in 1949, his foreign service career took him to Canada, New Zealand, South Korea (twice), and South Vietnam. He held the State Department position of Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs from 1967–1969 and was chief of staff for the U.S. delegation to the Paris Peace Talks from 1968 to 1971. Habib acquired increasingly important posts, serving as Ambassador to South Korea (1971–1974), Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs (1974–1976), and Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs (1976–1978). When South Korean opposition leader Kim Dae-jung was kidnapped in 1973 while Habib was U.S. ambassador to South Korea, Habib's discreet but firm intervention saved Kim's life. Kim later became the first opposition leader in South Korea to become president and also won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2000. A massive heart attack forced Habib to resign as Under Secretary in 1978. In 1981, President Ronald Reagan called him out of retirement to serve as special envoy to the Middle East. Habib negotiated a peace that allowed the PLO to evacuate from the besieged city of Beirut. In 1982, for his efforts he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He was also nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by Senator Charles H. Percy, chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee. Early in 1986, Reagan sent Habib to the Philippines to convince President Ferdinand Marcos to step down. In March 1986, Reagan appointed him as a special envoy to Central America with the intention of furthering U.S. interests in the conflict in Nicaragua. Administration hard-liners intended to use his fame and stature to advance a military solution, namely further funding of the Contras. Deciding that the Contadora Plan had run its course, Óscar Arias, the newly elected president of Costa Rica, drew up a plan that focused on democratization. While he viewed the Arias plan as riddled with loopholes, Habib worked to help revise it. On August 7, 1987, the five Central American presidents, much to the shock of the rest of the world, agreed in principle to the Arias plan. Because further negotiating would require Habib to meet directly with Nicaragua's president, Daniel Ortega, President Reagan forbade him to travel. Believing he no longer had the confidence of the president, Habib resigned. While on vacation in France, Habib suffered a cardiac arrhythmia in Puligny-Montrachet and died on 25 May 1992, at age 72. He was buried in the Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno, California. At the time of his death, Habib was one of the University of Idaho's most famous and respected graduates; he co-chaired the university's centennial fund-raising campaign several years earlier, as well as several class reunions. He moderated its Borah Symposium, an annual foreign affairs conference, in 1986, and received the university's highest honors for alumni in 1969, 1974, and 1983. The bulk of the collection offered here is from the early days of Habib's career, mainly the 1950s, when he worked in the American Embassies at Ottawa, Canada and Wellington, New Zealand, and when he returned from New Zealand and worked for the U.S. State Department's Office of Intelligence Research. The materials offered here are said to have descended from Habib's family. As there is no full-length biography of Habib, this material contains information for his life and career. It is said that Habib was known to be not much of a record keeper, this material was from his personal files.

Description
Newburyport: Bro. C. Nason, Printer, Watchtower Office, 1849.  Folio Broadside.  370 x 190 mm., [14 ½ x 7 ¾ inches].  Woodcut of Masonic symbol at the top center of the broadside, text within a decorative border.  Some discoloration to the paper, left edge with a few tears and a small piece missing without loss of text; previously folded. The feast of St. John the Baptist is one of two sacred days of remembrance established by the Grand Lodge in the early 18th century.  St. John was considered the patron saint of carpenters and masons, and this is commemorated every year during the last week of June.  The ceremony begins with an organ recital by Miss S. Davis, an Anthem, and a prayer by Br. G. M. Randall, D.G.M.  This is followed by an original hymn by Bro. Asa T. Newhall, D.D.G.M. printed in six stanzas, each with four lines of lyric.   Part 5 is Selections from the Scriptures followed by an Ode, from Masonic Melodies, No. 83. By Br. Thomas Power, P.G. Secretary of Grand Lodge of Massachusetts.  An Address by Br. Benj. Huntoon is next in order followed by Doxology Tune Old Hundred and finally the Benediction. Not found in OCLC.

Description
Philadelphia: Henry H Porter, 1832. First Edition. Publisher's original cloth backed boards with original orange glazed paper label on the front cover.. Good; heavily spotted throughout; contemporary signature torn from the title page; spine worn; covers loosening.. 8vo, 4 (adverts.) 80 pp. This copy with cogent annotations. Porter had a brief career as publisher in Philadelphia during the early 1830s. The book offered here was issued by the Journal of Health - another Porter project that failed in 1834 after four years. Porter, however, occupies an important place in the development of American medicine. Through his handful of separate publications and the journal he was unrelenting in his criticism of Thomsonians, botanical "doctors", homoeopaths, and purveyors of nostrums. He sought to bring medical care under the supervision of properly educated and trained physicians. Together with Jon Bell and David Condie they accounted for virtually all of the content in his publications. All of his publications are scarce in the market. See Atwater #2053.

Cincinnati: A.C. Peters & Brother, 1862. Softcover. Very Good. First edition. Lithograph by Thomas Sinclair. Folio. 5pp. Wrappers. Notched and worn along the spine from once being bound within an album, scattered foxing, toning, and offsetting throughout, still a very good copy. For voice and piano. Plate imprint, "We were very poor - 3394 - 4." The front cover states, "To the members of the Cincinnati Sketch Club," which was actually a periodical called *The Sketch Club*, which was supported by local artists and patrons, and edited by W.W. Fosdick. This song was published the year Fosdick passed away; he is best remembered for his poem "Aura Lea," which was set to music by George R. Poulton. This piece is unrecorded by *OCLC* and appears to be equally scarce in the trade.

From a college library. Pages clean and bright. "Cable succeeds in showing that America's failure in Vietnam was the result of faulty military doctrine, not a loss of will, as Harry Summers asserts in On Strategy (G.P.O., 1981). He sets the stage by reviewing the history of five small 20th-century wars, and the lessons the U.S. military learned from each in developing its doctrine of counterinsurgency war. Too often the lessons were invalid, leading to an almost total misunderstanding of the struggle in Vietnam. This is an excellent addition to the growing number of books critical of basic U.S. military doctrine, one both well researched and well written. It strongly challenges the idea that the United States could have won in Vietnam. For most academic, military, and public libraries, especially larger ones."--Library Journal.

ABOUT THIS BOOK: From the New York Times bestselling author of The Atlas Six comes the story of three siblings who, upon the death of their father, are forced to reckon with their long-festering rivalries, dangerous abilities, and the crushing weight of all their unrealized adolescent potential. Where there's a will, there's a war. Thayer Wren, the brilliant CEO of Wrenfare Magitech and so-called father of modern technology, is dead. Any one of his three telepathically and electrokinetically gifted children would be a plausible inheritor to the Wrenfare throne. Or at least, so they like to think. Meredith, textbook accomplished eldest daughter and the head of her own groundbreaking biotech company, has recently cured mental illness. You're welcome! If only her father's fortune wasn't her last hope for keeping her journalist ex-boyfriend from exposing what she really is: a total fraud. Arthur, second-youngest congressman in history, fights the good fight every day of his life. And yet, his wife might be leaving him, and he's losing his re-election campaign. But his dead father's approval in the form of a seat on the Wrenfare throne might just turn his sinking ship around. Eilidh, once the world's most famous ballerina, has spent the last five years as a run-of-the-mill marketing executive at her father's company after a life-altering injury put an end to her prodigious career. She might be lacking in accolades compared to her siblings, but if her father left her everything, it would finally validate her worth by confirming she'd been his favorite all along. On the pipeline of gifted kid to clinically depressed adult, nobody wins but which Wren will come out on top?(Publisher).

Description
New York: Modern Library, 1999. Third edition. Paperback. as New. 517pp Octavo. Copper colored spine and illustrated front cover. "The pleasure of reading the Education," wrote Alfred Kazin, "is the pleasure of reading a work of literature made up, literally, from historical facts." His political ideals shaped by two presidential ancestors- great-grandfather John Adams and grandfather John Quincy Adams- Henry Adams was one of the most original minds to confront the American scene from the Civil War to the First World War. Privately printed in 1907 and published to wide acclaim shortly after the author's death in 1918, Adam's Education is less a memoir than a work of brilliant history that charts the great transformation in nineteenth-century American intellectual life. A work of enormous humanity and remarkable prescience, The Education of Henry Adams presents a world poised between the certainties of the past and the uncertain possibilities of the future.
