Description
Chicago, IL: Hall & Co. (E. D. Mendel, Lithographic & Map Publishing Office, Chicago), 1855. Lithograph map of Chicago, 31 3/8 x 25 1/2 inches, the map fully enclosed with a simple bold rule. “Shows parks, public buildings, railroad stations, land ownership, and railroads; includes population statistics for 1840 through 1855” (OCLC). Published to be included in The Chicago City Directory, and Business Advertiser, compiled by E. H. Hall (Fourth Annual Edition, with a New map of the City. Chicago: Robert Fergus 1855; AII Ante-Fire Imprints 131). Only a handful of copies of the map are known, however, and Goodspeed’s cataloguing from 1946 states “The corresponding directory of the city calls for a map, but we know of no copy having one; apparently the map was issued separately in this form.” Not in Phillips, Graff, Eberstadt, or Streeter sale. Rare in trade with no copies noted at auction in the past 45 years (ABPC, 1976-2021 and RareBookHub) and the last copy offered for sale on RareBookHub, by Goodspeed, was in 1960. This recently cleaned and matted. An attractive copy of this rare map.

Description
1756. BARDWELL, Thomas. The practice of painting and perspective made easy in which is contained, the art of painting in oil, with the method of colouring and a new account of the art of perspective. [iii]-v, 64 pp. and 6 plates. 4to, 270 x 218 mm., nineteenth century three-quarter morocco. London: Printed by S. Richardson for the author, 1756. An interesting and scarce work by the eighteenth-century English portrait painter Thomas Bardwell. The section on painting deals exclusively with the oil technique and may be considered one of the most original productions of its kind written in England. Signed by the author on the verso of the title-page. A marginal stain to the first eight leaves, and to two of the plates, but otherwise sound.
