1961. When John F. Kennedy was elected president, Time Magazine commissioned photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt to do a photoshoot of the president-elect. Eisenstaedt took the photographs, and the best one appeared on the cover of Time in the November 16, 1960 issue. JFK liked it, and used the photograph to sign and present to notables after he entered the Oval Office. It is the photograph that he presented to Queen Elizabeth II in 1961.After serving in the Navy, Norman Paul started in Washington as an official of the Marshall Plan, which fostered the economic recovery of Europe after World War II, becoming deputy assistant to the administrator for international security affairs. He then became an assistant to Allen W. Dulles, the director of the Central Intelligence Agency. He remained with the CIA until 1960, when he joined the presidential campaign of John F. Kennedy. After President Kennedy's inauguration, Paul was named Assistant Secretary of Defense for legislative affairs. In 1962 he became Assistant Secretary of Defense for manpower, and in 1965, under President Johnson, he became Under Secretary of the Air Force.An 8 by 10 inch portrait photograph of Kennedy by Alfred Eisenstaedt, signed and inscribed on the mount in fountain pen, “To Norman Paul, with esteem and best regards, John Kennedy.” We would conjecture that Kennedy presented this to Paul shortly after his inauguration, when Paul was his Assistant Secretary of Defense for legislative affairs.

[Seattle], 1990. Very good or better overall.. Collection of twelve signed works of art from this Seattle punk poet, performer, musician, and artist, who counted among his fans Kurt Cobain. Equal parts Charles Bukowski, Spalding Gray, Henry Rollins, and William Burroughs (with whom he became close toward the end of the Beat writer's life), Stephen Jay "Jesse" Bernstein (1950-1991) was never much known outside of the Seattle area, where he got his start in the 1970s and '80s at the Poetry Theater at Pike's Place Market. By the end of that decade he was performing his music and intense spoken word pieces opening for the likes of Nirvana, Soundgarden, and other important bands in the burgeoning Seattle grunge scene. He was even included on the legendary 1988 compilation SUB POP 200 alongside numerous soon-to-be-famous figures including Beat Happening, Screaming Trees, Green River (a band that soon branched off into Pearl Jam, Mother Love Bone, and Temple of the Dog), as well as Nirvana and Soundgarden. An infamous performer - he often recited his work with his pet mouse in his mouth, threatened to injure himself onstage, and once urinated on a heckler - Bernstein was a particularly important influence (along with Daniel Johnston) on Kurt Cobain. This influence led many to dub him "the godfather of grunge." Beyond his musical and literary performances, Bernstein self-published much of his written work. However, an under-appreciated portion of his creative output was his visual art (again, like Cobain and Johnston). This collection consists of 11 smaller works: nine Rorschach-like abstract watercolors by Bernstein, one figurative linocut, and one nude portrait. These pieces are anchored by a large, bold pastel-and-watercolor reminiscent of fellow West Coast artist Richard Diebenkorn. Together they offer a window into a relatively unknown portion of this underground artist's career. Berstein, who struggled with addiction and mental health issues, killed himself in 1991. The well-received 2010 Peter Sillin documentary I AM SECRETLY AN IMPORTANT MAN has helped revive interest in his work. We trace only a handful of individual pieces in commerce. Unless otherwise noted, pieces are signed and dated in 1984 on versos by Bernstein. JAMES P. ALLAIRE (1785-1858). Allaire was a mechanic and businessman who produced engines for Robert Fultons steamboats. He built the Allaire Works in New Jersey, where he mined for iron ore and produced machines. An archive of five James Allaire letters to his wife Calicia Allaire at the Howell Works. The Village collapsed in 1846, and these letters to his wife were done in the aftermath. He wrote on long blue paper. The archive consists of:1) ALS. 1pg. 8 x 12 . April 12, 1848. New York. An autograph letter signed James P. Allaire: Yesterday I had no letter or tidings from you. Los Angeles, Cal.: [No publisher but printed in San Francisco by John H. Carmany & Co.], 1881. First Edition. Inscribed (in pencil) by Widney on the front pastedown: “Compliments of the Author, R.M. Widney.” Also inscribed (again in pencil) on the front endpaper: “Early L.A. Imprint. Comp. of author.” Robert Maclay Widney [1838-1929] was a real estate promoter and attorney. He was, more than anyone else, responsible for setting into motion the events that led to the founding of the University of Southern California. Los Angeles was a rough-and-tumble frontier town in the early 1870s, when a group of public-spirited citizens led by Widney first dreamed of establishing a university in the region. It took nearly a decade for this vision to become a reality but, in 1879, Widney formed a board of trustees and secured a donation of 308 lots of land for the university- the seeds of financial support for the nascent institution. When the University of Southern California was founded, he was elected the first president of its board of directors and was one of the original trustees of the endowment fund. Widney was instrumental in a number of advances in Southern California. He helped bring the Southern Pacific Railroad to Los Angeles, establish the city’s first horse-drawn trolley and organize the first chamber of commerce. He also helped form the Los Angeles County Bar Association and incorporate the city’s first light and power company. Widney was a leader of the Methodist Episcopal Church and wrote “The Plan Of Creation,” where his rigorous intellect strived to understand religion through the prism of science and see the design of the divine through natural laws and science. The “Plan Of Creation” is a rare book, especially signed by the author, and is an early Los Angeles-area imprint. Copyright date is 1878 but publication was in 1881. 12mo., embossed black cloth with gilt titles on the spine; 280 pages. Two Frontispiece Plates.. Near fine (covers nice with gilt on spine very bright & unrubbed); contents clean & tight). A fantastic copy!
