Description
EAST ASIAZuijin zhi Dongya Xingshi Tujie [Map Explaining the Latest Situation in East Asia]. Mainichi Shimbun Osaka Office, Japan, Showa period, 1937.Highly pictorial Japanese propaganda map of East Asia, issued just six months before the outbreak of the second Sino-Japanese War. The map focuses on China's military situation, and shows a separate Manchuria and Jidong Autonomous Region. Heavy industry, military communication and supply lines, airfields, and foreign military bases are delineated, with the note that there are '200,000 Communists' at the Chinese Communist Party's northern Shaanxi base. The projection of the map is such that it illustrates the 'horseshoe formation', showing Manchuria, 'the lifeline of Japan', as being surrounded by Japan's enemies.Chomo-lithographic map of East Asia, 780 x 1065 mm. Territories in yellow and identified with a red cross, other parts of the globe colored in green or red, explanatory title at foot, inset world map at lower left, labelled mainly in Japanese and Chinese characters. (Mild toning, long closed tear repaired with old tape, some other tears, edgewear.)

Description
Oxford: Printed at the Shakespeare Head Press...and Published for the Press by Basil Blackwell, 1932. First Thus. Very Good+. One of 375 numbered copies on Batchelor's Shakespeare Head handmade paper (this copy being number 134), out of a total edition of 386 copies. Eight volumes, large octavo (11 3/16 x 7 1/8 inches; 285 x 194 mm.). Bound in the original quarter green calf over marbled boards by Douglas Cockerell. Vellum tips. Spines lettered and dated in gilt. Edges untrimmed. With 111 woodcut illustrations, decorations, and title vignettes after and by Hilda Quick, all hand-colored, except for five that are printed in red and black. A Vewe of the Present State of Ireland with pictorial woodcut title-page border and woodcut frontispiece map of Ireland by Macdonald Gill, both hand-colored. Lettering for half-titles, title-pages, headings, and initials printed in red, black, and blue after designs by Joscelyne Gaskin, some shoulder notes printed in red, with occasional text printed in red and black. Some scuffing to boards and rubbing to spines. Mid-twentieth-century ink ownership inscriptions in first two volumes. Bright and fresh throughout. A Very Good+ set. "The text of the present edition of Spenser's Works has been prepared by Professor W.L. Renwick. It follows in every case the first editions...The decorations have been designed and engraved on wood by Hilda Quick, those in The Shepheardes Calender being based on the cuts in the original editions. The initial letters and the letterings for the title- page and headings have been engraved by her from designs by Joscelyne Gaskin...The eight volumes of Spenser, 1930, are equally good-different, as the character of the author, is, but in merita nothing to choose between them. Perhaps the small devices below Spenser's sonnets, printed in black and in the vellum copies beautifully laid with gold, are the most discreet and opulent form of decoration, fitting and in flawless taste" (Franklin). Franklin 150, 236. Ransom 17:67. Very Good+.

Description
London: George Routledge & Sons, 1866. First edition. Near Fine. Original red publisher's cloth binding with bright gilt to spine and front board. Gentle wear to boards and bumps to corners; rear hinge starting but holding well. Original yellow endpapers, with early ownership signature of Bernard Stampe in pencil to front endpaper, alongside various early dealers' notations. Internally clean and complete, collating [ii], 183, [1], [4, catalogue]. The only copy on the market of this charming educational book, OCLC locates 11 copies at institutions worldwide. Resisting the philosophy of 'all work and no play,' Anne Bowman provides young readers with a delightful way of gaining new knowledge and developing memory. "We have ventured to introduce into our 'Double Acrostics' many allusions to history, geography, or general literature as a means of testing the memory and judgement of our young readers; thus, while endeavoring to make our book instructive, offering to their ingenuity a pastime which fashion sanctions and the most severe discipline cannot condemn." In this sense, the increasingly challenging acrostics in Bowman's book provide an important glimpse into the shifting field of education in the Victorian period -- one focused less on the student as a subject of the realm and more on the student as an individual, and which allowed women an increasingly public place in the molding of young minds. "The new social and economic changes called upon the schools to broaden their aims and curricula. Schools were expected not only to promote literacy, mental discipline, and good moral character, but also to help children prepare for citizenship, and for individual development and success. Although teaching methods remained oriented towards textbook memorizing...a more sympathetic attitude towards children began to appear" (Britannica). Bowman is right, then, to say in her preface that parents would encourage works like hers, which enable "study and labour to be guilded with 'harmless' recreation." Near Fine.

Description
London: John C. Nimmo, 1894. First edition. Bound ca. 1960 in full red calf, covers with double gilt-ruled borders, spine with five raised bands, decoratively tooled in gilt in compartments, green and tan calf labels lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, gilt board-edges and turn-ins, red and white 'Cockerel' end-papers. Royal octavo (10 x 6 3/4 inches; 255 x 170 mm.). Collating xxii, 354, with twenty hand colored lithograph plates. A fine copy. "Fifty-two years have passed since the opening of the London and Brighton railway caused the break-up of what was perhaps the best-found, the most popular, and the busiest coach-road out of London. He, therefore, who can remember even the last flicker of the expiring embers of the Coaching Era must have exceeded that uncertain period of life known as middle age; while, if we would hear from living lips of the golden age of Brighton stage-coaching, as it was from, say, 1825, we must listen to an octogenarian. But these old-world coachmen, alas! are growing fewer in number; and their memories, once so amply stored with reminiscences which would now be priceless, from the standpoint of the coaching historian, are not quite so retentive as they once were. Moreover, these ancient artists are difficult to find; and even they cannot convey one back to the earliest days of the Brighton road -- that is to say, to the middle of the last century. In venturing to put forth, therefore, some account of the Brighton road, so far as it has been possible to glean its history, I do not claim to do any more than give the dry bones of stage-coaching. It has been my good fortune to converse with more than one of those who drove on the Brighton road in its best days, and their sayings and experiences are incorporated in the following pages" (Preface). Beautifully colored by hand and finely bound, the present work sought to preserve an important part of British life before it fully faded.
