Description
Los Angeles: 7410 Publishing Company, 1990. First edition. Original box. Very Good. LIMITED DELUXE EDITION PHOTO-BOOK DOCUMENTING THE PUBLIC RESPONSE TO THE DEATH OF MARILYN MONROE; WITH TWO SIGNED ORIGINAL PRINTS; COPY A OUT OF ONLY 26 LETTERED COPIES. Front-page news across the US and Europe, the death of Marilyn Monroe on Saturday, 4 August 1962 shocked all who had come to know and love the star over her dramatic rise to fame in the proceeding decade. Just as Monroe has captured the public's imagination in her lifetime, her unexpected passing launched a flurry of media attention, riddled with everything from conspiracy theories involving the Kennedys to critiques of ever-invasive paparazzi. Photojournalist Leigh Wiener (1926-1993) was there the morning of Sunday, 5 August, on assignment for Life Magazine to cover the unfolding dramatic aftermath. In his career, Wiener documented a wide array of public and private events featuring celebrities of all walks of life including every US President from Truman to Reagan. As noted in Prospectus for his Marilyn: A Hollywood Farewell, virtually all of Hollywood were barred from Monroe's funeral service, making Wiener's documentation of Monroe's death singular and unmatched: "Wiener is the only person to have photographed the actress during her life, the scenes of her death at her Brentwood home, photographed her at the Los Angeles County Morgue, and to have witnessed, with a camera, her controversial funeral. These circumstances guarantee that there can never again be a book like A Hollywood Farewell." WIENER, LEIGH. Marilyn: A Hollywood Farewell. Los Angeles: 7410 Publishing Company, 1990. Limited Deluxe First Edition, one of 26 lettered copies, of which this is Letter A. Signed on limitation page by Leigh A. Wiener and Richard B. Stolley. . Housed in publisher's original platinum-grey cloth box stamped in gold and black. Laid in (as published): two 11 x 14 silver-print photographs from the book printed on Ektalure paper and signed by Wiener, original publication prospectus. Fine condition, scarce, we not aware of another copy of this limited deluxe edition having been on the market.

Description
Vienna: Gerold for Johann P. Kraus, 1780. Folio. (16 x 11 inches). Half-title, dedication to the Empress Marie-Therese. Title with emblematic engraved vignette by C. Schütz, 4 headpieces and 8 tailpieces, 36 in-text illustrations of shells, all engraved by Schütz, C. Conti and others, 18 plates (17 fine hand-coloured engraved plates of shells by Schütz or J. Adam after Fr. Fuxeder and 1 plate [Plate 4] supplied in expert watercolour facsimile). Quarter vellum and marbled paper boards, original titling piece preserved on the spine One of the most beautiful of all conchological works including examples from the collection of the Empress of Austria, a collection "of great importance to systematists, as Born described from it a number of species new to science" (Dance). The present work was commissioned by Empress Marie-Therese to record and codify her natural history collection in Vienna. In 1778, Born published a descriptive catalogue of the collection; the present work, published two years later is on a much more sumptuous scale and included many fine colour plates. Baron Ignaz Edler von Born was born in 1742 in Karlsburg, Transylvania (now Alba Iulia, Romania). Having rejected an education with the Jesuits in Vienna, he studied law in Prague and only later turned to natural history, and more importantly, to mining. He joined the Department of Mines and the Mint in Prague in 1770, and mineralogy is the area in which he is now best remembered (see DSB II, p. 315). His reputation and extensive experience ensured that in 1776 he was called to Vienna by the Empress to arrange and describe the Imperial collection. The work on the shells in the Royal Collection was the only published result of this commission, which was apparently cut short by the Empress' death in 1780. An earlier edition, in octavo with only a single plate, was published in 1778. "Born's interests and activities extended into fields other than mineralogy and mining... In 1783 Born published Specimen monachologiae, a vicious satire against monks in which the various orders were classified according to a system modeled after Linnaeus (DSB)." BM(NH) I, p. 202; S. Peter Dance, Shell Collecting An Illustrated History, pp. 93-94, no. 36; Nissen ZBI 470.

Description
95 (including title printed on purple paper); 99 folding leaves. 13 juan in two vols. 8vo, orig. green wrappers, orig. block-printed title labels on upper covers, new stitching. [China]: Han qing yi, 1882. Philosopher, mathematician, and philologist, Dai (1724-77), was a pivotal figure in Qing intellectual history and the most noted Confucian scholar of the Qing dynasty. The present work is a noteworthy study of the Fangyan [Regional Words] by Yang Xiong (53 B.C.-18 A.D.). Yang Xiong’s book, a kind of linguistic mirror of the Han empire, “collected synonyms taken from different dialects and languages, gathered by court messengers who had been sent to various regions of China. It is the oldest known Chinese documentation on languages other than Chinese” (Bottero, “Ancient China” 57). During the centuries following its completion, Yang’s pioneering book was often cited and remained well known. Yet the text was corrupted over time, and available editions were not reliable. According to the bibliographical notes to the Qianlong emperor’s massive manuscript library, the Complete Books of the Four Treasuries, the book “had in practice been lost although it was still extant.” Dai Zhen worked on the Complete Books of the Four Treasuries project, which was what enabled this edition of Fangyan. Dai’s involvement with the Four Treasuries gave him unprecedented access to the Yongle Dadian [Great Canon of the (Reign of) Eternal Joy], the massive manuscript encyclopedia compiled at the court of the Yongle emperor of the Ming dynasty in 1403-08. The encyclopedia was never printed but remained in imperial possession (most of it was later lost during the tumultuous last years of the Qing dynasty). Dai’s work with the encyclopedia led to the recovery of several ancient texts, including a version of Fangyan. Dai compared the Yongle Dadian version with, on the one hand, quotations from Fangyan seen in other early books and, on the other, Ming editions of the text still in circulation. Thus he was able to reconstruct something like the original appearance of Yang Xiong’s text. Dai began researching Fangyan in 1755. He completed the present book more than 20 years later, in 1776, the year before his death. Later Qing scholars produced editions that corrected or supplemented Dai’s text, but in the words of his student, the eminent philologist Duan Yucai (1735-1815), it is a “book that you in philology cannot do without.” WorldCat Accession numbers: 1042221370 & 52390832 Fine set, preserved in a hantao. Description
Paris & Montpellier: Gabon/ Bruxelles: Chez Gabon, 1829. FIRST EDITION. With 7 folding plates. Contemporary calf-backed marbled boards, spine labels; text leaves toned, some browning and spotting. Laid in is a folded piece of paper with contemporary annotations containing a recipe for a topical ointment for skin ulcers and lesions. First edition of Récamier’s work on cancer treatment. He describes the manner of extension of cancer and demonstrates the process of local infiltration. Récamier was the first to recognize the process of metastasis to describe the spread of cancer as secondary growths in the brain occurring in mammary carcinoma; it was in this book that he coined the term. He also described for the first time invasion of veins by cancer. Récamier (1774-1852) was a French gynecologist and master of gross pathology. He is credited with the popularization of several instruments in gynecological medicine. Garrison & Morton, 2610; Norman, 1805; Waller, 7787; Wellcome, IV, 485.

An uncommon cabinet card lampooning the plight of the solitary miner through a series of drawings. Dennis who was active in Canon City and Colorado Springs during the same era. Fine condition with minimal wear.
