Partial Transcript""The letter which I received from you soon after your examination at Princeton led me to expect another soon but none has been received. I hope you are not ill again. Kirk returned to resume his studies at the commercial College last week. My health is apparently firm again. Is your room satisfactorily furnished and are your studies and other matters going smoothly with you. If you find yourself better fitted than most of your class, which your advantages would lead me to expect, do not for a day relax your labor, but make but make [sic] the most of it. Write me.""Historical BackgroundThe political reputation of Pierce was fatally damaged by his defense of slavery, his refusal to concede the legitimacy of the Civil War at its outset, and by his continuing friendship with Confederate President Jefferson Davis. He resumed his law practice, but was haunted by his personal and political demons.Pierce, an alcoholic, and his chronically ill wife, Jane, had watched two young sons die before the age of three. Their third, Benjamin, was killed tragically in a train accident a month before Pierce's inauguration in early 1853. Jane Pierce came to believe Benjamin's death was a form of divine retribution for his father's political ambition.In part due to the loss of his sons in childhood, Pierce took an interest in the education of his nephew. Frank became the former President's principal legatee in 1869 and was himself later a successful lawyer.Franklin Pierce (1804-1869) was the 14th president of the United States (1853-1857). Although his roots and home were in New Hampshire, Pierce sided with the South on the slavery issue, and was criticized as a ""doughface"" Democrat. Regarded by history as a weak, but well-meaning and honest man, Pierce left office publicly hated and discredited.Col. An alumni catalog notes that in 1873 he received both a Master's degree from Princeton and Bachelor of Laws degree from Harvard. Historical Background In 1879, the slogan of the Workingmen's Party of California was "The Chinese Must Go!," and the anti-Chinese hysteria was reaching a widespread volume across the state, a sentiment that both Porter and his compatriot Newman seemed to have sided with: "The article was written some two months ago about the time when the Californians began to get excited on the subject of the Chinese Question. The article I send may serve to amuse you and perhaps make you a little uneasy about the future prospect of the establishment of a Mongolian dynasty in Washington." This rise of hostility was followed by the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act, which would make history as the first measure restricting emigration to the United States based on race. Condition Very good. Autograph Notes "Valentine's Manual 12.50," likely Henry Collins Brown, Valentine's Manual of Old New York. Henry Collins Brown (1862-1961) was born in Scotland and came to New York in 1875. He became a historian, author, and lecturer, and founded the Museum of the City of New York in 1923. He wrote several books on the history of New York and edited Valentine's Manual, an annual publication, from 1917 to 1928. Brown's publication continued a series called the Manual of the Corporation of the City of New York, published in 28 issues between 1841 and 1870. "Ladies Companion 2.50," likely The Ladies' Companion, and Literary Expositor. William W. Snowden published The Ladies' Companion, a Monthly Magazine; Devoted to Literature and the Fine Arts in New York from 1834 to 1844 in 21 volumes.

Description: Swedish sign painter in New York uses racial stereotypes on envelope to tell his brother in Florida that he misses him. [AFRICAN AMERICAN]. GUSTAF NORDSTROM. Handmade Postal Cover, to Frederick Nordstrom, February [25], 1902, Brooklyn, New York. 1 p., 11½ x 5 in. Historical Background Sign painter Gus Nordstrom of Brooklyn likely cut the pictures of crying African American babies from a contemporary advertisement. The "pickaninny" caricature of "child coons" show them with stereotypical bulging eyes and big red lips, and speaking in a primitive dialect. On postcards and prints, black children were frequently depicted as bait for alligators. The first famous pickaninny was Topsy, in Harriet Beecher Stowe's anti-slavery novel Uncle Tom's Cabin (1850). The character quickly became common in minstrel shows, where she had a happy, mirthful, mischievous persona. Little Black Sambo then appeared in a series of children's books first published in England in 1899. From 1900 to 1902, the New York Herald carried a comic strip called Pore Lil Mose, who migrated from Cottonville, Georgia, to New York City with his animal friends. That a native-born teenager would send this to his Swedish-born older brother speaks to the depth of the pickaninny stereotype in American culture early in the twentieth century. Gustaf Adolf Nordstrom (1884-1949) was born in New York and lived at 15 Myrtle Ave. in Brooklyn. In 1906, he and his new wife May Reilly (1890-1911) moved to Jacksonville, Florida, and lived with his brother Fred and sister-in-law Lottie. By 1910, he was again living in Brooklyn and working as a sign painter. John Frederick Nordstrom (1877-1947) was born in Sweden and arrived in New York with his family in 1882. He became a naturalized citizen on June 14, 1898. He served from June to November 1898 in 71st New York Infantry during the Spanish-American War. In 1899, he married Regina Nordstrom (b. 1874). In 1904, he married Charlotte Josephine Gugel (1870-1935). In 1904, he was in partnership with Niels Pederson in a furniture repairing and upholstering business. By 1908, he was an upholsterer with his own business in Jacksonville, where he remained until 1911. By 1920, he was operating a furniture store just north of Boston. By 1930, he operated an automobile store. We don't know if these Nordstroms were related to the founder of the department store, John W. Nordstrom, who emigrated from Sweden in 1887, arriving in New York with $5 in his pocket, unable to speak a word of English. Condition Toning and light soiling. In a letter to Robert Lowell dated 27 June 1950 Bishop writes of THIS book: "I spent most of the weekend reading Samuel Greenberg--have you? I got so mad at the introductions, particularly Tate's--and if you haven't read the poems I recommend them highly. He was certainly one of the finest poetic characters I know anything about, and phrases are magnificent--and no critic has ever apparently appreciated either at their real value" (ONE ART: ELIZABETH BISHOP'S LETTERS, p. 204). In another letter to Robert Lowell dated August 1950, Bishop writes: "I'm reading The 'Green Huntsman' and it's marvelous--also just finished Samuel Greenberg and Isaac Rosenberg who have many strange points in common" (WORDS IN AIR: THE COMPLETE CORRESPONDENCE OF ELIZABETH BISHOP AND ROBERT LOWELL). Clearly even two months later this book was still in the forefront of Bishop's mind. While we have handled several copies of Bishop's books signed by her as well as correspondence, this is the first book from the poet's library that we have encountered. It appears, also, to be a book that had some influence on Bishop's development as a poet. Greenberg was also a huge influence on the poet Hart Crane, who first read Greenberg in manuscript. Crane was so taken by Greenberg, he lifted entire lines for his own poems.
