Description
London: Bradbury & Evans, 1857 London: Bradbury and Evans, 1857-1859. In the original 24 serial parts. First edition, first issue, p. 207 with "actresses" for "ancestresses", and part 12 with chapters XVII-XVIII misnumbered as XVIII-XIX. Publisher's yellow paper wrappers, advertisements present. A very good set with some toning and soiling to wrappers, some wear to edges, particularly to volumes I, X, XV, XVI, XVIII-XX, and XIV, the others being only lightly worn, a few light pencil and ink marks from previous owners, volume IV with small bookseller's sticker to front wrapper, volume I with spine split and several pages disbound but present. Overall, a lovely set that presents well. The Virginians, written as a sequel to Thackeray's earlier work Henry Esmond (1852), picks up where the first novel left off, telling the story of Henry Esmond's two grandsons, George and Henry Warrington. A historical novel, the book takes place at the start of the American Revolution, and the two protagonists must navigate the obstacles of standing on opposing sides during the war. Unlike most of Thackeray's work, The Virginians is set in North America.. First Edition. Soft Cover. Very Good.

Commentaries on the Laws of England in Four Books, With Notes Selected from the Editions of Archibold, Christian, Cole, Ridge, Chitty, Stewart, Kerr, And Others; And in Addition Notes and References To All Text Books and Decisions Wherein the Commentaries Have Cited and All the Statutes Modifying the Text. Originally published: Philadelphia: Geo. T. Bisel Co., 1922. 4 Vols. xxx, star-paged 485, 532, 428, 649 pp. Reprinted 2012 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. ISBN-13: 9781616192068; ISBN-10: 1616192062. Paperback. New. $150. * Reprint of the final reissue of Lewis's edition, first published in 1897. It contains the text of the 1778 Oxford edition, the last edited by Blacktone, but omits the appendices to Books 3 and 4. "The material used in the preparation of this edition may be divided into four classes. First, [modern research] into the history of our law, such as the works of Maine, of Pollock and Maitland, and of Vinogradoff. Second, the statutes in England and the United States which modify the statements in the text. Third, the notes of my predecessors. Fourth, the cases decided and the text-books published since Blackstone's day which have referred to him as an authority. (...) The fourth class of material is, in my judgment, by far the most important. All reports and text-books published since Blackstone's day were carefully searched for references to his work.": Preface iii. This reissue not in Eller.
