Description
Paris: Jeanne Bucher, 1936. First edition. Original wrappers. Very Good. FIRST EDITION, THE PRINTER JACQUES GROU-RADENEZ'S COPY, WITH TWO LONG PERSONAL INSCRIPTIONS BY HUGNET. WITH COVER MY MARCEL DUCHAMP. ONE OF ONLY 294 COPIES IN THE EDITION; AN OUT-OF-SERIES COPY LABELED "EXEMPLAIRE NO. G.H.". "This is Georges Hugnet's first volume of 'poemes-decoupages.' The title echoes Andre Mallarme's Un Coup de Des N'Abolira Jamais le hazard (1895), and Hugnet's poems, printed on the left-hand pages of the book, mirror the unusual spacing and various typefaces and sizes of Un Coup de Des. Hugnet had joined the Surrealists by 1932, and the collages on the right-hand pages, centered around nude images cut out of Paris Magazine, rehearse typical Surrealist themes... The cover by Marcel Duchamp spells out the title in letters containing the names of a whole Surrealist pantheon, including Sade, Freud, Rimbaud, Paracelsus, Swift, Heraclitus, Roussel, Chaplin, Jarry, Uccello, and Saint-Juste, and also a Man Ray photograph of DuChamp's assisted readymade 'Why Not Sneeze, Rrose Sélavy?' consisting of 152 marble cubes the size of sugar cubes, a thermometer, and a cuttlebone inside a small cage" (Roth 101, p.92). An extraordinary association copy, signed and inscribed twice by Hugnet: On the half-title, Hugnet has written a warm inscription dated 1936 (the year of publication) thanking Grou-Radenez for his work on the book. Beneath that, in 1963, he added an additional inscription to the new owner of the book (the surrealist photographer Leo Dohmen) praising Grou-Radenez, who had been arrested and murdered by the Nazi's for hiding Jewish children and aiding the French Resistance. Paris: Editions Jeanne Bucher, 1936. Original photographically embossed wrappers hand-sewn (as issued); housed in beautiful custom box. Illustrated throughout with black-and-white photo collages, several hand-colored. Only mild wear to wrappers; remnants of paper at spine ends (we have not been able to confirm that there was originally a paper spine under the external sewing; all other copies we've seen have not had a paper spine). A beautiful copy.

London: George G. Harrap & Company Limited, 1923. First Edition. Quarter Vellum over Boards. Very Good/Good. A futuristic journey that was from its very conception sweetly moored in the misty past! 4to. 31 by 24 cm. 48 pp and 48 tipped-in (or mounted) color plates. The singular story and its illustrations are truly sui generis; the fabulous concoction of fantasy rendered here draws equally from both the text and illustrations. Condition: Short closed tear, upper spine extremity. Touches of soiling on vellum spine, but the vellum overall is bright and comes off as clean. Neatly written short ink gift inscription dated 1928 on FFEP. Within green leaves, upon which text and plates are mounted, has age toning around edges, manifest in light browning. DJ with a few chips, the largest being the rear upper edge, yet the most conspicuous being by the upper spine extremity. Also chipped by lower extremity. All chips have jagged, or irregular edges. Rear with a few crinkle lines and one dime-sized stain. The DJ now protected from further decay by mylar and white backing. We rate the DJ merely Good because of these chips, but if considering only the front cover, it would come out better.

New York: Macmillan, 1952. First editions. Near Fine/Very Good. Second printing of volume 1, first printings of volumes 2 & 3. Three octavo volumes (9 1/8 x 6 1/8 inches; 232 x 155 mm.). xii, 496; xiv, 405, [1, blank]; xvi, 503, [1, blank] pp. The three volumes containing 26 black & white photogravure plates. Each volume inscribed on front free endpaper "To my good friend Ida Koverman from Herbert Hoover." Publishers blue cloth, front covers with signature in gilt, spines lettered in gilt, pale blue endpapers. Original dust jackets, a little worn, volumes 2 & 3 price-clipped. A near fine set in very good dust jackets. Herbert Clark Hoover (1874 -1964) was an American politician and humanitarian who served as the 31st president of the United States from 1929 to 1933. A wealthy mining engineer before his presidency, Hoover led the wartime Commission for Relief in Belgium, served as the director of the U.S. Food Administration, and served as the U.S. secretary of commerce (White House Historical Association). He was a member of the Republican Party and held office during the onset of the Great Depression. These memoirs were inscribed to Ida Koverman (1876-1954), the influential executive assistant to Louis B. Mayer of MGM. "Ida began her career in the jewelry business and became an executive in the New York City offices of Consolidated Gold Fields of South Africa. Here she had her early encounters with Herbert Hoover. Always active in Republican politics, she worked as executive secretary for the presidential campaigns of Calvin Coolidge in 1924 and Herbert Hoover in 1928. Koverman had a steady correspondence with Hoover sometimes asking for favors for Hollywood stars and other times using him to advance certain Republican candidates. After moving to California, Ida Koverman worked as the executive secretary of the Los Angeles County Central Committee of the state Republican Party. Working alongside engineer-entrepreneur Ralph Arnold, and allying with like-minded women leaders, she helped to lead the vanguard that won the White House for Herbert Hoover in 1928" (Herbert Hoover Library and Musuem). Near Fine in Very Good dust jacket.

5 p.l., 219, [1] pp. 8vo, cont. boards, black leather lettering piece on spine. Paris: Silvestre, 1824. An important sale. "Ce catalogue renferme une réunion très-nombreuse de livres imprimés par les Elzeviers; il en est de très-rares et qui étaient jusqu'alors restés inconnus aux bibliographes."Brunet, Dictionnaire de Bibliologie Catholique, col. 498. A large number of Motteley's books come from the libraries of de Thou and the Comte d'Hoym. We learn from the same source that Motteley (d. 1850), lived as a hermit, alone and isolated in a rundown apartment. He was afraid to make home repairs because of his fear of disturbing the treasures on which he had spent so much money. Of the 2173 lots, approximately 550 are attributed to the Elzeviers; a number of the items are accompanied by useful printed notes and include an expansive contribution by Charles Nodier on lot 533. Fine copy, printed on thick paper and priced throughout in a contemporary hand. ❧ Grolier Club, Printed Catalogues of French Book Auctions…1643-1830, 587–“According to Bibliographie de la France, 20 large paper copies were printed.”.

Description
The albumen print shows Remington standing full length, holding a painter's palette and brushes docketed on verso, "Fred Remington on stage at Leary's Studio." Additional notation from the former owner of the photograph, photography collector and dealer Howard Daitz, notes Remington's birth and death dates and basic biographical information. In a third hand, the artist's name is written in pencil in the upper right corner. The photograph measures 8 3/4 x 6 1/4 inches attached to 7 x 9 inch board and both show some overall sunning, fading and aging. The two lower corners are bent at their tips. There is a crack in the albumen print at midpoint of left margin of about two inches appears to have been secured by affixing the print to the hard board. Our research suggests this is a unique image of Remington.

Description
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1936. Octavo (22.5 x 16 cm.), 484 pages. Illustrated. FIRST EDITION. A fascinating account of the evolution of the New Orleans' French Quarter underworld, with Prohibition tales and stories of gambling, prostitution, voodoo purveyors, and political corruption. One of a series of book-length explorations of the low life of various cities undertaken by the great Herbert Asbury, perhaps best known for his Gangs of New York, which served as the foundation for the film of the same name by Martin Scorcese. In 1928, well before repeal of the Eighteenth Amendment, Asbury reintroduced America to Jerry Thomas' Bon Vivant's Companion, the classic "earliest" cocktail manual. His final book, The Great Illusion: An Informal History of Prohibition, was published in 1950. Internally clean and sound, in black linen-backed boards. The unclipped dust jacket is near fine, with just a bit of light wear to the edges and some age-toning.

PAUL DE KRUIF (1890 - 1971) was an American microbiologist and writer. Publishing as Paul de Kruif, he is known for his 1926 book, Microbe Hunters. In 1912, he graduated from the University of Michigan with a bachelor's degree, and he remained there to obtain a Ph.D., which was granted in 1916. He immediately entered service as a private in Mexico on the Pancho Villa Expedition and afterwards served as a lieutenant and a captain in World War I in France. After returning to the University of Michigan as an assistant professor, De Kruif briefly worked for the Rockefeller Institute (for Medical Research). He then became a full-time writer. De Kruif assisted Sinclair Lewis with his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel Arrowsmith (1925) by providing the scientific and medical information required by the plot, along with character sketches.
