Description
1863. LINCOLN, Abraham. Proclamation of Emancipation. Iowa: W.H. Pratt, 1865. Large lithographic broadside, measuring 12 by 15 inches; matted and framed, entire piece measures 16 by 20 inches. $3800.Original large calligraphic portrait lithograph of Abraham Lincoln created from the text of the Emancipation Proclamation, with portions of the text highlighted to create a portrait of Lincoln clearly visible within the text, designed by W.H. Pratt. On January 1, 1863, Lincoln reportedly paused before signing the final Emancipation Proclamation, saying, ""I never, in my life, felt more certain that I was doing right than I do in signing this paper."" It declared that ""all persons held as slaves… are and henceforward shall be free."" The Emancipation Proclamation is ""one of the strangest and most important state papers ever issued by an American President… It was a statement of intent rather than a valid statute, and it was of doubtful legality… But in the end it changed the whole character of the war and, more than any other single thing, doomed the Confederacy to defeat"" (Ketchum & Catton, 252). ""Contemporary with the Spencerian school of penmanship there developed what was known as calligraphic portraits. The likeness of an individual was reproduced by writing in such a fashion that the main features of the subject were made to stand out in bold relief, yet no lines were written which did not appear in the given text… The Emancipation Proclamation written out in free hand has been most often used as a basis for the Lincoln portrait… Possibly the most artistic of all these calligraphic portraits was one made by W.H. Pratt of Davenport, Iowa"" (Lincoln Lore, Lincoln National Life Foundation). Marginal pinhole, a few tiny spots of marginal foxing. Near-fine condition.

Description
London: Rodwell & Martin. C. Hullmandel, printer, 1822. Half Calf. Marbled paper pastedown on boards. Very Good. Folio. 42.5 by 31.5 cm. 25 hand-colored views, all depicting a calm, lovely, bucolic riverfront, all populated by a few people in Regency dress, both polite and rustic, to lend scale and interest. Coloring is generally of a soft palette, creating an appealing dreamy haziness to the panoramas. Abbey Scenery 434. A slightly complicated bibliographic accounting for this work. It is complete in itself, other than our copy is without a title. Shortly afterward ten plates were added to make 35 views. We would note that generally copies encountered of this work are without coloring, although Abbey's copy of 35 views is described in a note as colored lithographs. Armorial bookplate of John Spicer, Esher Place. Condition: moderate wear to the cover, with a few abrasions or rubbed areas, and typical edgewear. Scattered, mostly light, foxing. A few repaired closed tears in the margins of the plates.

Description
London: Henry Colburn, 1845. First edition. Very Good. Large duodecimo. 2 works in 6 volumes. Contemporary dark blue half morocco gilt, top edge gilt. Lithographic frontispiece to each volume (hand-colored in volume 1 of the Memoirs), a folding plan and woodcut illustrations in-text. Extremities with some wear, a little further scuffing to volume 1 of the Memoirs. A little foxing internally but generally a very clean example. Both works are rarely found together in first edition, especially in a matching, contemporary binding. A Very Good set. "No one really knew quite who Lady Hester was (was she perhaps the daughter of the king of England?) but everyone knew that she was a great personage and must be treated as such" (ODNB). A niece of William Pitt, Lady Stanhope (1776-1839) travelled with her physician Charles Meryon in 1810 via Malta to Constantinople and then on to Egypt. There she was received with honours by Muhammad 'Ali Pasha, subsequently touring the Holy Land and Lebanon. Most notably during this time she was crowned 'Queen of the Desert' at Palmyra. From thereon she lived in Sidon and Dar Jun in Lebanon, apparently developing a serious interest in the occult and housing refugees during Ibrahim Pasha's siege of Acre in 1831-2. Meryon had returned to England in 1817, however visited her in 1819, 1830 and 1837, documenting her changing circumstances. His accounts value cannot be overstated, as it stood as the only eyewitness account of her remarkable life. "Despite their diffuseness the Memoirs make excellent reading . . . Meryon describes with utmost minuteness her complicated oriental environment, her tyranny, and her in terminable conversations . . . with an almost Boswellian power of self-effacement" (DNB, cited after Blackmer). Blackmer 1117. Very Good.

Red cloth boards. Very good, in good dust wrapper
Description
New York: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1973. First edition. Hardcover. Red cloth boards. Very good, in good dust wrapper. 211 pages. 24.5 x 15 cm. Presentation copy, warmly inscribed to Yogi Berra: "Dearest Yogi and Family - These 'Pots' will send the Ball over the Fence. With love - your ever-lovin' sister & Umpire, Pearl." Actress, singer, and born raconteur, Pearl Bailey brought her gift for storytelling to the kitchen in this exuberant blend of recipes, reminiscence, and philosophy. This copy carries an especially appealing association: Bailey's friendship with baseball great Yogi Berra. A devoted New York Mets fan, she attended Game 5 of the 1969 World Series - (Berra then serving as first base coach) - and she was famously captured on film shouting, "Did he hit him?! Oh, it's amazin' - AMAZIN'!" Her excitement and personality featured prominently in the official highlight reel of that championship series. Bailey's rapport with the team continued after their historic win. During the ticker-tape parade that followed, she performed in Bryant Park, near the New York Public Library, in front of a crowd of thousands. As The New York Times (Oct. 21, 1969) recalled, she appeared "dressed in a black suit and black hat fringed with fun," joining Metropolitan Opera baritone Robert Merrill sing a lively duet of "Take Me Out to the Ball Game," with broadcaster Ralph Kiner lending commentary. Part memoir, part cookbook, Pearl's Kitchen invites the reader into Bailey's home - its rhythms, humor, and heart. Her recipes come suffused with song and story, a reflection of her singular warmth both onstage and off. A lovely presentation copy linking two American originals. Interior clean. Boards toned. Dust wrapper toned and chipped at edges, with small closed tear to front cover. Covered in protective mylar.
